Lee Anderson, Conservative deputy chair says asylum seekers should ‘fuck off back to France’ if they don’t want to be housed on the Bobby Stockholm barge

Alex Chalk the justice secretary described Anderson’s language as ‘salty’ but ‘not bigotry at all’ ‘his indignation is well placed’.

What is happening in our country when someone like Anderson is elevated then supported by our government

Population densities don't work. It's simply another "I am not a racist" argument.

This theconversation.com/think-your-country-is-crowded-these-maps-reveal-the-truth-about-population-density-across-europe-90345 gives a different view of densities.

If we do not get the climate under control, what we are looking at today will seem like child's play. How will we deal with that? Countries need to get together and talk now, not leave it until we have no choice. But that will not happen under the hard right and it's supporters, will it?

foxie48 Thu 10-Aug-23 11:48:46

Just to add to Paperbackwriter's excellent post, many economic migrants are working to send money back to support their whole family, that's why they are often the young men. Rather than work shy scroungers, which is how some people paint them, they are actually carrying the burden of trying to support a family that has clubbed together, often incurring debts, to send them abroad to seek work. We have no idea how hard life can be in some countries and if we don't help to make it better for them the economic migrants will keep coming.

Well done who ever got my post deleteted. It appears the prejudice is not only on the 13 pages of mainly basically racist comments.

Ignore and keep posting your thoughts, they are always of interest to me and others. Only speaking for myself but I like people with strong opinions as long as they are not too far off my own but I would never try to close down a discussion because someone strongly agreed with me.

I love " like people with strong opinions as long as they are not too far off my own". It gave me a much needed laugh. I imagine it's true of most of us.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Aug-23 11:57:27

I questioned your post DaisyAnneReturns but I can assure you I didn’t report it.

Iam64 Thu 10-Aug-23 12:02:27

How come DAR was deleted and posts expressing opposing views, expressed in terms many of us found offensive sat and?

See this post is extremely offensive but I won’t report it. I didn’t report your other post that got deleted even though it was a way over the top rant.

Maybe calm down a bit?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Aug-23 12:22:18

I didn’t report the post either but thought that calling those with differing views ignorant elderly people was very offensive.

Nicenanny3 Thu 10-Aug-23 12:25:10

100,000 migrants/illegals have crossed the channel since 2018.

400 have crossed today 😡

MayBee70 Thu 10-Aug-23 12:27:51

So what exactly is the government doing about it?

Nicenanny3 Thu 10-Aug-23 12:36:08

Well they tried to bring in Rwanda as a deterrent but Labour, The Lords and the leftie lawyers, CareforCalais put a stop to that although it is going through the Supreme court.

Sunak has only been PM since Oct 2022 and he and Suella Braverman are trying but blocked at every stage by the above. Perhaps we should leave the ECHR. No wonder Lee Anderson is frustrated I am too.

Nicenanny3 Thu 10-Aug-23 12:37:08

But lots of posters on here welcome them 😡

Casdon Thu 10-Aug-23 12:39:26

Sparklefizz

Ok Casdon But do a comparison with Italy Sparklefizz and the argument doesn’t stack up.

Italy population density 195.3
Britain population density 274.9

We still have a much higher population density, so my argument does stack up.

Sorry, according to the land size you’re right, but I still don’t follow the argument. Is population density a determinant of immigration, in which case should the Netherlands and Belgium for example accept none at all? Should land which is uninhabitable be taken off the population density figures before they are calculated? (Eg 40% of Italy is mountainous)? Bearing in mind that only 2% of England is built on, it seems a meaningless determinant to me.

So what if Kandinsky supports or doesn't support Nigel Farage or UKIP who are still a political party by the way, what's it got to do with you.

UKIP are now the Reform Party. Having said that the Conservative Party have pretty much morphed into UKIP .

UKIP still exists, it’s led by Neil Hamilton. It may only have two members though.

So, what’s it campaigning to be independent of then?

I have no idea! The law maybe?

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 10-Aug-23 13:09:56

Maremia and Callistemon - absolutely right. As expected this post has taken a swerve into a different direction. Apparently I am " pearl clutcher" for finding foul language offensive, from an MP or an actress. And yes, I agree withMr C - if you have to resort to this, it suggests that you are unable to support your argument with logic.

I didn’t report the post either but thought that calling those with differing views ignorant elderly people was very offensive.

We are all ignorant in different areas GSM. Those at the very top of knowledge in one particular area will usually admit there ignorance of others.

The interesting Mary Beard said in an article:

"Democracy cannot properly operate without knowledge, which the entire electorate of summer 2016 lacked."

She was, of course talking about the Leave/Remain referendum. She went on to say:

“Sure, say we want to leave, but you can only in the end say we are going to leave when we know what it means. Otherwise,” she said, “it’s just ___ in the dark.”

I don't think Lee Anderson's swearing is the only problem, although knowing where not to repeat it may be.

It really is the combination of his swearing, his ignorance, and the reason why he did it.

I am happy to admit my complete ignorance in the vast majority of the areas of life. That way I can learn. What I would not want to have to admit would be forming views without attempting to have more knowledge. What is wrong with saying "my gut tells me ... ... but I don't know why I feel that way", and then learning enough to form an opinion.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 10-Aug-23 13:31:39

But that is Democracy Nicenanny3. I worry about comments like yours. Do you now agree with the hard-right's wish to move to Dictatorship?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Aug-23 16:04:45

It’s one thing admitting that there are things of which you have less knowledge than others, telling your fellow posters that they are ignorant is something else.

I assume Lee Anderson is also labelled ignorant because his views are not your views?

mrshat Thu 10-Aug-23 16:32:15

Well said Urms. Excellent post Tues 8 Aug. 20.57 x

Iam64 Thu 10-Aug-23 16:48:06

The fact I disagree with Lee Anderson on migrants isn’t the reason I see him as ignorant. That’s down to his various comments about a variety of issues. I disagree with Suella Braverman but I don’t dismiss her as ignorant

Maremia Thu 10-Aug-23 16:49:29

Darn! That's 100,000 people now. He's going to need a bigger word!
Missed your post DAR. It must have been absolutely appalling, when you read some of the ones on here that have been allowed to remain! wink

I agree
The word ignorant has two meanings:
not having enough knowledge, understanding, or information about something
not polite or showing respect
He is definitely the second meaning, and it’s quite hard to believe he isn’t the first as well, because it’s either that or he’s a bigot.

Nicenanny3 Thu 10-Aug-23 16:56:59

Well you could say some posters on here who shout racist at anyone who doesn't share their views are bigots.

Casdon Thu 10-Aug-23 17:09:30

Nicenanny3

Well you could say some posters on here who shout racist at anyone who doesn't share their views are bigots.

Yes, you’re right, you could. You could say the same about somebody who refuses to acknowledge any evidence about asylum seekers that doesn’t meet their own narrative.
Heigh Ho.
Bigot - a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

Bea65 Thu 10-Aug-23 17:10:53

Am I allowed to say ‘sod off’ to the AS who don’t want to board the Bibby with fresh clean rooms/ food /facilities and a mobile phone!!

Wyllow3 Thu 10-Aug-23 17:14:01

Perhaps we could try and understand why?

They happen to be human beings, after all.

We lose that sense - at our peril. many awful things happen on this troubled planet, and many wonderful things too. Personally I cannot set my heart and write off another without losing something precious.
