Charles & Camilla in Paris

They arrived in windy conditions in Paris today and Camilla looked great, although she had a "Marilyn Monroe moment" on the steps coming down from the plane. I thought the late Queen always had her hems weighted to prevent that.

But Charles - how baggy and scruffy his suit looked next to Macron. Charles is a slim man, like Macron, yet his suit did him no favours whereas Macron looked very smart.

They have got a full programme while they are in Paris. Sounded exhausting.

Look at the grandeur of the palace what have that family done to deserve all that wealth born into it that’s all. Monarchy a waste of space and money.

Did you see Versailles where the Macrons entertained Charles?

You can visit Versaille any time you want to, Buckingham Palace only on specific dates-10 weeks in the summer and the cost is a bit different. 19,50 Euros for V. £30 for BP.

Grany Sun 24-Sept-23 10:11:33

Yes there are far more tourists to Palace Versallies then BP

Visit Britain admitted if monarchy gone it would not change visitor numbers.

Funny isn't it. It's supposed to be uncomfortable, impractical, dated and in need of repair. You'd imagine the RF would be delighted to move out and hand the building over to become a tourist attraction, earning money for the country, but they cling on. Living in a palace must have some attraction.

Where would they work from ?

Where would they work from ?

We could build a grey, functional block with a nice room downstairs for visiting Heads of State. Offices and studio flats upstairs for staff and working Royals when they need to be there.
When there's to be a banquet, sorry, supper, then they could some nice pictures from the National Gallery and get the jewels back from the pawn shop for the evening.

Or they could borrow No. 10 if they want to impress.

Oh come on they own enough property in central London to give them a wide choice. Kensington Palace, St James Palace, Clarence House?
They could still use Buck House for receptions like the French do Versailles. They don't need to live there.

Anniebach Sun 24-Sept-23 16:13:54

Do they live in Buck house ?

They don't live there.

There might be flats available when someone has been to a function but they are apparently rather dated.

Wouldn't suit many Gransnetters

As a Camilla fan I believe she needs a good dresser. The navy colour she wore to the banquet suited her beautifully, but why did she have to wear such a voluminous cloak, she looked enormous as she sailed by - I could only find a photo of her seated without her cloak when her dress looked much smarter and fitted. Mdm Macron looked so chic also in navy. I was not impressed with QC’s pink or white outfits. Sadly I feel she’s inherited the Q mum’s taste in clothes.

I thought earlier that she should have kept her MIL's dresser, Angela Kelly, on the payroll.

Not necessarily the bright colours which HM favoured so she could be spotted in a crowd, but the simple, classic styles were more favourable for someone of more mature years.

I’m sure you well know that the King can’t sell Buckingham Palace Glorianny, because he doesn’t own it, it’s the property of the state. By all accounts he would prefer never to live there.

I didn't suggest he should sell it, simply move out and open it to the public full time. The money raised could be ring fenced for the NHS.

Anniebach Sun 24-Sept-23 21:09:33

What of the offices ?

Casdon Sun 24-Sept-23 21:12:54

If you read all the available information, as I understand he wants it to be more accessible to the public. The building is currently being repaired extensively, it’s in a bad condition apparently. To clarify though, he doesn’t live there - and he can’t unilaterally decide anything because he doesn’t own it personally.

CoolCoco Sun 24-Sept-23 21:22:49

Buck House is a slum compared to Versailles which really is a Palace.

Joseann Sun 24-Sept-23 21:41:22

15 million euros a year are spent on the upkeep of Versailles.

Jaxjacky Sun 24-Sept-23 22:06:14

Thé Élysée Palace (French President’s home) is allegedly beautiful too, it is only open to the public on Heritage Days, of which there have been three this year. It costs €104m a year to run.

15 million euros a year are spent on the upkeep of Versailles.

But it's income is bigger
The annual consolidated budget of the Public Establishment is around €100 million. Operating expenses are covered from the Establishment’s own resources, notably the revenue it earns from ticket sales and its commercial activities. Investment spending is financed in part by an annual State grant, with the remainder covered by the Establishment’s own self-financing efforts. All profits are reinvested in the running and upkeep of the Palace and its estate.
So it is not only accessible and open to the public it provides employment and it pays for ts own upkeep.

I was lucky enough to attend a reception at the Élysée Palace. The gold wallpaper was pretty spectacular, but I have never seen so many grand clocks in my life! Several in each room.

The Hermitage in St Petersburg is fab too. You don’t need live monarchs to have fabulous tourist attractions.

ronib Mon 25-Sept-23 10:52:32

CoolCoco it’s true that you don’t need live monarchs to have monuments to wealth and privilege but dead Tsars Kings, Pharaohs etc did the job of having them built in the first instance.

Usually by exploiting ordinary people of course,

Glorianny yes …. And so it continues.
