Should any marches around or near the Cenotaph this weekend not be allowed?

Following the defacing of a Cenotaph in Rotherham yesterday, would it be advisable for the police to rule that marches in or around the area of the Cenotaph should not be allowed, this weekend only?
A poppy seller was attacked by people in a huge crowd this week, people who have been marching on previous weekends have committed hate crimes by calling for Jews to be eliminated. Should the sanctity of the Cenotaph and the Remembrance Service be at the mercy of the marchers to choose to do the right thing? Why was a Cenotaph thought to be a legitimate target in Rotherham?
Surely those who live in our liberal democracy should understand why this weekend is particularly special to so many people. Those of us who live in this country, a liberal democracy, should understand that compared to so many people in the world, we are very lucky to live in a country that affords us great freedoms, including the right to protest peacefully. Peaceful protest however, does not include the right to call for the deaths of other people, to attack poppy sellers or others, or to deface public buildings.
Why are the London police refusing to use the laws that are already available to ban any marching around this area for for this one weekend?

HettyBetty

I am now confused.

TR and his mob were purportedly there to "protect the Cenotaph" which commemorates the service men and women killed, in part, by the Nazis.

So why were some of them wearing swastikas and making Nazi salutes? Have I missed a vital bit of this? Or are they perhaps not the most educated members of society.

Why, why indeed. They are fascists.

The vital bit you missed, perhaps, is that they were NOT there to 'protect the Cenotaph' or to respect those who died in wars- but 100% to cause trouble. Again, not a difference of opinion, but a massive difference in intent.

Very polite to call them 'thugs', they are much worse than that.

JaneJudge Sat 11-Nov-23 17:20:41

I think they are hapless
Do not give them credit

Another very sad and worrying sign of the times, unfortunately. It's time the powers that be got a grip and defended the majority of us law-abiding citezens. I cannot believe what this country has become and I worry for our grandchildren and yes I do think these hate marches should be stopped.

albertina Sat 11-Nov-23 17:20:53

I grew up in a Service family where there was tremendous respect for Remembrance Day. If we can't respect and commemorate our war dead on this special day, what kind of country are we ?

Boz Sat 11-Nov-23 17:56:59

The peace marchers are now being hassled and verbally abused under cover of darkness. Predictable but scary.

HettyBetty Sat 11-Nov-23 18:08:46

JudyBloom Do you mean the largely peaceful march calling for an end to killing innocent Palestinians, or the rather rabble-like procession of white men wearing swastikas and making Nazi salutes?

HettyBetty Sat 11-Nov-23 18:11:27

Fleurpepper Troublemakers indeed. I believe R4 are saying 105 of them were arrested. I have not heard if any people on the main demo were arrested, does anybody know?

HettyBetty Sat 11-Nov-23 18:28:11

albertina You are absolutely right, but could you explain where and how people were prevented from commemorating the war dead? I haven't seen anything although I might have missed it. I understand that the events at the Cenotaph were over a mile from the pro - Palestinian March and that the police successfully kept them apart.

It is important to remember that 11 November does not belong to any one group. FWIW my son is in London today at an event which has nothing to do with either Remembrance or the Israeli /Palestinian war. Should that have been stopped too?

I write as someone with a number of war dead in my family, in my husband's family and in my daughter-in-law's family.

payens1 Sat 11-Nov-23 18:30:26

So, the Palestinian peace march of 300,000 people went off without a hitch. But the right wing thugs emboldened by Suella were at the Cenotaph fighting with police.
This government encourages hate and division.

HettyBetty Sat 11-Nov-23 18:34:52

Do you think that will hasten Suella Braverman's demise?

All this faux concern about the arrests - I reckon it’s made your day.

What an utterly juvenile comment.

If you support those who behaved so disgracefully and disrespectfully at the Cenotaph - then there is nothing more to say, truly.

You own it, and you alone.

Anniebach Sat 11-Nov-23 18:45:41

The police must be relieved that their number of arrests from the march were not high !

MaizieD Sat 11-Nov-23 18:50:39

The day has panned out very much as I expected it would. The behaviour of the right wing mob at the Cenotaph was despicable and their subsequent behaviour, fighting the police, was no better.

A figure I saw of the police estimate of their numbers put them at about 500. Police say about 105 arrested. 20%... what an achievement... 🤔

Kandinsky Sat 11-Nov-23 18:55:03

Today was nothing.
I live in London and have seen a 1000x worse.
Anyone remember the 2011 riots?
Absolute carnage.

Fleurpepper Sat 11-Nov-23 18:56:47

Please go back to the OP- we are talking about today, at the Cenotaph.

MaizieD Sat 11-Nov-23 18:58:05

From what I've seen the marchers didn't give them any bother, though they may well make some arrests for hate speech after examining footage.

Quite honestly, with a march that size, with such diverse participants and a variety of motives for marching, it's not surprising that some elements were undesirable and would deserve to be detained/arrested. Doubt if it's 20% of them, though..

What does that have to do with today's events? Are you trying in some way to minimise the appalling behaviour of your right wing thugs.? Nazi salutes at the cenotaph of all places, from those claiming to be defending it. That's very sick...

Anniebach Sat 11-Nov-23 19:02:02

May make some arrests !

Fleurpepper Sat 11-Nov-23 19:04:15

Thugs is far too polite- just cannot find the right word. Can anyone think of something.

HettyBetty Sat 11-Nov-23 19:10:46

JaneJudge I missed your question earlier.

Yes, several from my town, a few hours journey from London. A good cross section as it happens, they included Muslim and Jewish people, no doubt travelling peacefully on the same coach.

Iam64 Sat 11-Nov-23 19:19:54

Good points jaberwok
Israel, the only democratic country in the region
Grannygravy- thst banner must be hate speech / I hope the man is arrested

Woman with small child at Palestine demo is taken away by police after they discovered a sign claiming Israel's actions in Gaza are worse than the Nazis (Daily Mail)

Disgusting.

Another disgusting banner at the Pro Palestine Rally.
