Should any marches around or near the Cenotaph this weekend not be allowed?

Following the defacing of a Cenotaph in Rotherham yesterday, would it be advisable for the police to rule that marches in or around the area of the Cenotaph should not be allowed, this weekend only?
A poppy seller was attacked by people in a huge crowd this week, people who have been marching on previous weekends have committed hate crimes by calling for Jews to be eliminated. Should the sanctity of the Cenotaph and the Remembrance Service be at the mercy of the marchers to choose to do the right thing? Why was a Cenotaph thought to be a legitimate target in Rotherham?
Surely those who live in our liberal democracy should understand why this weekend is particularly special to so many people. Those of us who live in this country, a liberal democracy, should understand that compared to so many people in the world, we are very lucky to live in a country that affords us great freedoms, including the right to protest peacefully. Peaceful protest however, does not include the right to call for the deaths of other people, to attack poppy sellers or others, or to deface public buildings.
Why are the London police refusing to use the laws that are already available to ban any marching around this area for for this one weekend?

Fleurpepper do stop speaking as if you know what the vast majority of Jews in Israel want as you have no clue.

I have extended family members in Israel and take most of fleurpepper’s comments with a pinch of salt.

You are all shuffling the wrong person. Definitely shuffle Gove - female instinct.

Devorgilla Sun 12-Nov-23 16:18:24

All being well the lady will be relieved of her duties tomorrow and either relegated to the back benches or a very minor role elsewhere. We can but hope.

Whitewavemark2

Oreo

I hadn’t seen it Whitewavemark2 and maybe these placard holding people should be called out when they are so offensive.

It was mentioned on this thread earlier on, but not copied - there was absolutely no need to do so. Why do you need to see it? It is in my opinion too offensive to be copied and viewed.

Sometimes things shouldn’t be swept under the carpet, so yes show it, and I hadn’t seen it mentioned earlier in any case.

merlotgran very wise.

A sideways promotion for Suella?😄 I think Sunak will have to act soon on this.

ronib Sun 12-Nov-23 16:34:56

I hope not Oreo.

I have never live in Israel. I base comments on friends from Israel who do have a clue- massive clues. And figures that show that Netanyahu does NOT have the support of the majority in Israel, nor among Jews around the world. And who are terrified in so many ways about what is happening in Gaza, and what it will eventually be blamed on Jews in Israel and around the world.

What do you think will happen next? When the war is over (if ...). Do you think Palestinians will accept the loss of the last bits of the country where they were still sort of allowed to live, with apartheid rules? Do you think the Hamas movement will just die out with their bombed leaders? Surely cou can't be so naive.

There is nothing antisemitic in opposing what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza and the West Bank, in opposing illegal settlements and expansion, by the most cruel and terrible of ways. This has nothing to do with 'Jews' but with Netanyahu. But those who support him will risk being tarred with the same brush. If you support him, you have to take responsibility, and become part of it.

I think Suella Braverman will be ‘shuffled’ pretty soon.I do hope so.

What to?

Not Education, please .....

Governor of the Pitcairn Islands (or somewhere).

You have comments from some friends in Israel Fleurpepper that bit of your comment I can accept. Not much else.

Oreo Sun 12-Nov-23 16:51:03

Haha growstuff but isn’t that where they sent Pritti Patel?🤪

I hadn’t seen the placard that was shown. I’m pleased I’ve seen it as it informs me of what is happening. It shouldn’t be hidden from view so people don’t know what happened yesterday.

Merlotgran you are very wise.

My Jewish friends who live in America (one is Israeli but lives in America, the other American) do not support Netanyahu, but they do support the IDF after the terrible massacre on 7/10. They are shocked and extremely angry about what happened that day. They support no ceasefire until the hostages are released. Just one couple out of the whole world, but I’m reporting accurately and honestly on their feelings.

Iam64 Sun 12-Nov-23 16:56:50

Fleurpepper, it’s also worth remembering that Netanyahu is the elected leader of the only democratic state in the regionI’m not a fan, none if my Jewish friends voted, or would vote for him. Enough people did though. We can only hope that changes before long

I find it concerning that the evil murders and massacres by Hamas on 7/10 might be airbrushed out of history by some.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 12-Nov-23 16:58:30

Our best friends are Jewish, live in U.K., they are fearful.

I quote

We will not support a ceasefire until all the hostages who were brutally dragged from their homes on 7/10 are released unharmed

^ Once this is done, the talking can begin^

Callistemon21 Sun 12-Nov-23 16:58:48

And that the hostages have been forgotten, as is evident from some posts on here.

I don’t go in for name calling Fleurpepper and think that we all need to be careful and not fall for any hamas propaganda.
We can’t believe so much that goes around on SM these days either, and tho you believe what you quote to be true, I reserve judgement.

If you only look at one media report you are likely to get a very biased account. Out of interest I'd already looked at the DM, Independent, Telegraph, Guardian and Washington Post + of course the BBC. What pictures you get shown, the order of the report and the emphasis it puts on various aspects of the event. I'm not surprised we live in a somewhat polarised society if anyone only reads a right wing or a left wing paper, all they get is confirmation of what they already think! It doesn't cost much to get online access to publications that are behind a pay wall. Don't know if this link will work but I think the account is pretty factual.

madeleine45 mentioned the Portuguese dictatorship which reminded me of a visit to Lisbon a few years ago - precovid. It transpired that we were there on the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution which took place on 25 April 1974.

The taxi driver that took us to the airport asked us if we knew about the revolution, which we did. He told us about his mother, a seamstress who, with her children got on a bus one day to find the fares had increased. She complained about this - everything was going up in price apart from her wages. A secret service man was on the bus and he told the driver stop and threw everyone of the bus, apart from the seamstress. The bus drove to the secret service HQ where she was tortured, including having her nails pulled out. Whilst the tax driver was telling us this, he was in tears. He also bemoaned the fact that young people didn't care about the revolution and were, in fact, becoming to lean towards the right.

These days I watch Trevor Phillips on Sunday mornings on Sky. Prior to that I watch David Bull on Talk TV, out of interest. This morning was particularly bad with his co presenter, Dr Renee.... The latter was completely supportive of Braverman whom, she said, was speaking for the millions of British - the silent majority.

I find this difficult to believe and I hope that it is not the case.
