I should clarify- on Gransnet.
Just as it has been suggested by posters on GN that anything and everything a person possesses should be claimed by the Government when they die. Property, acquired wealth, possessions.

I woke up this morning still an anti -monarchist. It's not enough to hope the feudal system will go away by itself. There has to be legislation.

The alternative is so much worse. I’m not a particular royalist but I truly believe Charles is a good monarch and not a selfish money grabbing toff. I also like all the history stuff that goes with the British monarchy and all the pomp and dressing up - spectacular and worth so much in tourist dollars.

You don't give up anything because you are dead.

Your heirs don't lose everything, either, they pay IHT on assets in excess of £325,000 (or more in some circumstances). £325,000 might seem like sad chicken feed to some people, but for most it is more than they will ever have. Your heirs are lucky to get it.

MaizieD I think you'll find the reference is to the suggestion made some time ago on another thread that when you die your assets should go to the state in entirety, that there should be no inheritance at all for your family.

£325,000 doesn’t even buy a 1/2 bedroom flat in the south east of the U.K.

I am 100% against inheritance tax, always have and always will be.

It is an iniquitous tax on the dead. 40% of everything above the threshold unless you are leaving business assets or farmland and a few other things that most of us will not own.

I remember that thread, and no surprise I am totally against that as well.

As am I. If the likes of John McDonnell were in power I would not be surprised to see that become a reality, were it not for the fact that it would be political suicide and the necessary legislation wouldn’t get through. Many would love to see it happen though.

I am totally against any IHT. Why in the world should the government have any more excess money to squander?

I must be dim - why do some people favor high IHT?

Not sad chicken feed at all, but certainly, divided between inheritors, possibly a deposit for a property of their own so that they would not be reliant on the vagaries of the rental market for the rest of their lives.

I did not realise the assets of those who died intestate, with no close family, went to the Royals. I always thought it went to the Government in the same way as IHT does.

Only in the two Duchies, Elusivebutterfly and the money is then set aside for renovations of properties and given away to organisations such as Scouts, Guides, Youth organisations and good causes.

No, it's assets of someone 'daft enough' to not have any traceable living relatives. And if some bona fide relatives pop up at a later date they can gat the assets (or their value) beck from the Crown.

Many years ago I inherited about £100 as the share of the estate of a very distant relative I'd never even known existed, but the solicitor dealing with the estate (one very modestly priced house) had done a very thorough search.

Find something you can convince a majority is better than we have, and that this time isn't a box of lies and you would be home and dry otherwise you achieve nothing.

Do you think? I don’t think it will galvanise the public like Brexit, the majority aren’t anti monarchy, there aren’t millions of haters - and I think the monarchy itself is changing to better meet what the public requires of it.
