It’s just been on the news that Charles has cancer and is not taking any duties for now

Eloethan Wed 07-Feb-24 11:46:02

I haven't read all the thread but noticed that Helen says she is leaving Gransnet because she doesn't agree with some of the posts she has read on this and other topics. She, in particular, took offence at coolcoco's comments.

The vast majority of posters on this thread have made very mild comments re this topic but obviously some people have different views. I am always sad to hear about anyone's diagnosis of a horrible illness but I tend to agree that there is already too much coverage on this issue.

If you find a site that absolutely mirrors all of your views and values, I should think it would be very dull - and actually I think it would be rather sinister. Sometimes I believe we need to listen to views that are not in line with our own, however annoying or distasteful they may feel to us.
Also, self-censorship often occurs when people are afraid to voice their honest opinions because they may be criticised, ridiculed or ganged up on. This is how authoritarian leaders seize more and more power until almost everyone remains silent.

BBC News didn't seem to be as extensive as ITV News which went on for a whole hour.

We don't take a daily newspaper.

Like the stress Charles caused Harrys mother .... and the rest. People have short memories when it comes to this family.

Sky news has a reporter standing in the wilds of Sandringham

On the news this morning it showed there were dozens of reporters and cameramen hanging around the gates of Sandringham. I find that quite disturbing, what are they hoping for? A picture of the King looking frail, perhaps bald after chemo? Don't think I could be a Royal for anything such an invasion of privacy.

Is this an appropriate time and place to say that?

semperfidelis Wed 07-Feb-24 12:00:14

I do feel concerned for King Charles, as for anyone else with cancer. But Charles is receiving his treatment about three days after diagnosis. How many more have been on waiting lists for months/years waiting for cancer treatment?

Yes, he did but this isn't the thread for bringing all this back up...and I have very strong views about his behaviour! The man has got cancer and nobody deserves that. Regardless of his past, surely we can find it in ourselves to wish him a speedy recovery.

You don’t sit on an NHS waiting list for months, let alone years, if cancer is suspected or diagnosed.

No short memories on here, just a sense of the appropriate.

She was also William's mother angelbreeze.

Please could you give us a number because I do not believe that is true.

An investigation, histology, scan and an operation all within about 54 hours on the NHS.

You have to get past the GP's receptionist first, of course.

Bluebell well said. My DH is going into Christy’s tomorrow for a serious cancer op. Thankfully he was diagnosed early.

Like the stress caused by Harry’s mother to several wives

It's good that some GNs are able to report rapid NHS diagnosis and cancer treatments and that the King's cancer was identified but the overall NHS picture is not good after 14 years of the present government.

The House of Commons Library which prepares research reports for MPs on a politically neutral basis has very recently found (quote)

'The 62-day waiting time standard for cancer treatment (measured from urgent GP referral) has not been met in recent years. Performance declined between 2013 and 2018. Since the pandemic it has fallen further. In September 2023, 59.3% of patients waited under 62 days for treatment after an urgent GP referral, compared with an target of 85%.' Taking other routes into account success in meeting the target is 'about 60%'. Some hospital trusts are much worse than others.

The above does not address time waiting to get a diagnosis which depends on diagnostic tests, scans, etc. The current backlog for such tests is about 1.6 million patients and 'after a dip in the waiting list during the early stages of the pandemic, there was an unusual rise from 2021 onwards'. The backlog has risen year on year since 2010. Of course the backlog includes tests for all problems, not only cancer, but it is worrying to say the least.

Sunak claimed in an interview that things are improving but the evidence does not seem to support that.

If you want to read the summary report it is at commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7281/ and it contains a link to the full report.

Just read something about a prediction from Nostradarmus ... excuse spelling if wrong. It's saying Harry will be king not William if anything happens to King Charles!!!! Anyone else read this??? Media gone mad surely!!!!

Anniebach Wed 07-Feb-24 12:39:50

Something awful happening to William and his three children!

MissInterpreted Wed 07-Feb-24 12:41:52

Sorry, but predictions from Nostradamus - come on. This is getting too silly for words. Next we'll be hearing from someone who's been talking to Di from beyond the grave!

Anniebach Wed 07-Feb-24 12:44:14

Thank you Annie x. nadateturbe, nothing to apologise for, I really wish you well at this difficult time.

DamaskRose Wed 07-Feb-24 12:49:20

I know of three people who were in hospital for treatment of cancer/heart problems within days. I am no fan of the Westminster government or the Scottish government (two of the above were in Scotland) but that’s a fact.
As for having short memories I remember very well, we haven’t been allowed to forget, but feel it inappropriate to bring these things up at this time. Perhaps the King’s illness will bring about some sort of reconciliation between Harry and himself and, in time, between William and Harry. That’s what, apart from full recovery from a horrible illness for the King, I hope for.
