Blimey GSM I wish to see an end to the boat crossings which are run by people trafficking crooks, but asking the Royal Navy to fire on them is a step too far.

I didn’t say ‘fire on them’. I said ‘fire warning shots’. There’s quite a difference. Better than using lifeboats to escort them to our shores.

Because within 20+ miles from the U.K. shore we’d be in French territory.

The RN or border force cutters would certainly not be able to pursue them further than that.

I doubt they would want to risk an encounter with a Navy warship. The idea is that they go back from whence they came, and that word gets out.

With all the technology we have today it doesn’t sound a big ask.

Because within 20+ miles from the U.K. shore we’d be in French territory.

The RN or border force cutters would certainly not be able to pursue them further than that.

I don't know whether there's been any new investment in cutters, but last time I looked, there was only one for the whole of the East coast. The asylum seekers don't only arrive in Dover, but other ports, including more remote beaches in Suffolk and Norfolk. It would be impossible for one cutter to monitor the whole area. Not only that, but many arrive by plane or in the back of lorries (like the 39 Vietnamese who died) or overstay legal visas. There has also been a trend over the last few months increasingly to use Belgium rather than France.

If the French police become more pro-active, the smugglers will just move their departures to Belgium (as is already happening).

For those of you onhere who informed me that my long NHS hospital wait had nothing to do with the great number of migrants entering the country.

My reply is , if the millions the government has spent supporting migrants had instead been spent on more Doctors and nurses plus hospitals I may not been in the position of waiting 15months to see a Consultant.

To live in pain is a terrible thing, be it physical or mental. I can quite understand why you want to seek help.

However, please explain to me how we one of the richest nations on earth have found ourselves in this position?

There are enough resources. It is not the fault of migrants.

Please look at the figures released by the BBC as quoted earlier in the post by Oreo and GSH.

This country can not continue to take so many migrants year after year.

Australian friends tell me they dealt successfully with their problem of too many migrants .

However unfortunate the residents of other nations are it’s not our responsibility, to feed and house them, if it was we would have countless millions of economic migrants wanting to move here.

Half of Africa would move to the UK along with many others as well, that’s why we have a visa system so that we can choose the ones we need. Anyone arriving without a visa is illegal until he is granted permission to stay.

I think it’s awful you’ve had such a long wait, BUT we have a shortage of doctors, nurses and other NHS staff. People are leaving the NHS and not being replaced because people don’t want these roles in the UK as the pay and conditions are so much better in many other countries!

I entirely agree utterbliss. I’m sorry you’re suffering. We are spending vast sums on migrants - not only housing and feeding them, but providing medical care, education for children in already crowded schools, policing and border force, processing asylum applications, court time spent on appeals, legal aid paid to their lawyers, provision of translators. The list is endless. People talk of those who have settled being of use to the community, but I read just today that only 55% of settled asylum seekers are in employment, as opposed to 88% of economic migrants (no, I can’t provide a link). And of course every home occupied by asylum seekers is a home no longer available to anyone else. This just cannot be allowed to continue. People born and raised in this country are suffering the consequences. Utterbliss is one such. Talk, which is what Starmer offers, is not enough.

But if you compare the number entering illegally and those entering quite easily via legal channels we still have far more “legal” migrants entering our country.

It’s the govt you need to be getting at, they’ve allowed this to happen.

Me too, I would be very happy👍🏼

I have no qualms about legal migrants Cossy, unless of course they disappear within the UK when their visa expires. We need skilled workers, agricultural workers and universities rely on the fees paid by genuine foreign students. I have no problem with labour shortages being addressed through controlled migration because those migrants will contribute to the country.

Well said. I keep pointing out that the UK is the size of a pocket handkerchief and the number of large countries that are queuing up to come here is frightening. How many people will attempt to cross the Channel, not just this year or next year, but in 10 years, 20 years. How many people will attempt to come here illegally in that time?

It needs to stop now or we will collapse under a tide of humanity. Those who want to keep taking people in, just stop and think about the numbers for a moment. When will you say 'enough is enough'?

If you think Labour’s policies - reaching agreement with other countries to send immigrants to them (which it has been suggested will mean taking people from those countries in return) will work, wwm, I am amazed. Starmer is weak, an appeaser. A tough line is needed to stop this constant influx of boats. I would be happy to see Navy warships patrolling and firing warning shots to force the boats to turn back.

The Royal Navy could not be expected to do that.

People talk like we should be grateful to all the people from overseas who work in our hospitals. Well we are because most of them are here legally.

At the same time, our hospitals are full of people who are here illegally. I personally know about a dozen people who have had to pay about £15,000 for hip replacements because of the waiting lists.

GSM thank for your words of support. When I read some people's opinions on allowing endless migrants into this country, I worry about all our futures.

Cossy, have you not considered the terrible pressures put on medical professionals Hospital Doctors/Nurses/ GPs is not helped by extra numbers added to the population by migrants and their dependants. ( My family confirm this to me, who are on the" front line" of the medical profession.)
