Spot on, Freya.
Good Morning Thursday 7th May 2026
I think someone got out of the wrong side of the bed
I have to comment on a new thread about some of the comments on here relating to immigrants, entering either via illegal means or via correct channels.
Those entering our country illegally, for whatever reason, make up just 1% of our overall population.
Often, but not always, they've made arduous physically and emotionally demanding journeys just to reach Europe. Often, but not always, their second language is English and sometimes they have links to the UK.
1% of our population!
Yet so much time is given to portraying them in the media as men pretending to be boys, criminals, exploiters, scroungers etc etc etc
Perhaps before swallowing all the "bad" stories about immigrants portrayed in our media, encouraged by our govt., you should, a) remember these people are human beings, b) we are here safe and sound only due to an accident of birth.
If you must "blame" someone for this situation, blame the corrupt govts from which many of these people come, blame the traffickers, blame our inept govt.
We could (not saying we should!) have housed every single asylum seeker in the last two years using the money our govt has so freely given to France and Rwanda.
Think and research before you negatively comment about immigrants.
Spot on, Freya.
I suppose the EU countries stick together and apply the same EU rule on immigration. Perhaps we should join them!

Now there’s a good idea Greta👏
We grant asylum to approximately the same percentage of refugees as the EU and have far fewer to process than many European countries and we do it much less efficiently. Lots of current info for anyone who is interested in facts in this link

For anyone thinking that stopping immigration totally is a good idea, they might like to look at what is happening in Japan. It has a rapidly ageing but long lived population, falling birthrate, is in an economic decline and is extremely zenophobic with few migrant workers. The link below is also worth a read

I doubt anyone wants to stop immigration completely, rather they want it controlled so that we only accept those who have skills that we need, and who can speak the language.
Interesting links, foxie48. It begs the question WHY can't we handle immigration as efficiently as others?

Do they handle this efficiently though?
The man who lost his daughter in such tragic circumstances had been refused asylum in both Belgium and Sweden but still remained living in Sweden for seven years and had a family there. He worked in the construction industry.
If he had been refused more than once why was he not returned to Basra? Meanwhile, he was helping Sweden's economy by working, the children were at school.
🤔
Here here Germanshepherdsmum
My neighbour works in a hotel housing migrants.
The wife stays in the hotel and claims she has been abused and goes on the list for a house whilst the 'abusing husband' rents a flat. When the wife gets a house the husband moves in with her and the children and lets another 'abusing husband' move into the flat while his 'abused wife' stays at the hotel waiting for a house. They even have the cheek to turn down houses offered to them because they are not in the area they want to move to!
Disgraceful. Good cases for a flight to Rwanda.
We don’t make policy on here-say but on the rule of law - or in the Tories case breaking the rule of law.
I have no doubt that one or two planes will fly with unfortunate asylum seekers in them. (I shall never use that airline)
Sunak is hoping to them point out that his plan is working and hope to capitalise on that. Of course there are headbangers out there whose only interest in politics rests on riding Britain of all “immigrants” and will vote for Sunak because of the couple of flights.
The overwhelming majority will be voting for ending the measures of austerity, saving the NHS, giving proper funding to our children’s education, filling in the pot holes! Etc.
It's difficult to understand what happened to this particular father in Sweden and Belgium without knowing all the details. What one can say is that immigration has become a major problem and I can't see it going away any time soon.
Until the boats are turned back nothing will deter them. Harsh but true.
Very true Aveline. Immigration is a big issue for many voters, above education and potholes on their list of priorities. Labour won’t do anything to improve the situation.

Do you know what Labours immigration policies are?
Yes, I don’t comment without reading.
No excuse for that GSM (hotel example) but to use the "bad egg example" to then tar all with same brush "they're all the same", and ignores the asylum seekers that have gone on to quietly settle in the UK and make a real contribution.
Did I say ‘they’re all the same’? No.

So why your comment that Labour won’t do anything to improve the situation? How on earth do you arrive at that conclusion, when comparing their immigration policies to Tory policies, it doesn’t make sense.

Agree. Most asylum seekers given leave to stay settle down and contribute to our society but they don't make headline news. Reading about the lawyers who were working for the Post Office, I won't say what I think about them, I am too disgusted, but I don't think they are representative of the law!
If you think Labour’s policies - reaching agreement with other countries to send immigrants to them (which it has been suggested will mean taking people from those countries in return) will work, wwm, I am amazed. Starmer is weak, an appeaser. A tough line is needed to stop this constant influx of boats. I would be happy to see Navy warships patrolling and firing warning shots to force the boats to turn back.

Blimey!!
I’m not sure what I should say.
In fact I don’t think I can say anything😄😄😄
Conundrum.
Relative on a road trip to through France Belgium Switzerland and is at present in Italy.
Passports shown before and after at the Chunnel.
But has as yet not had to show passports on entering any of the above mentioned countries.
So why are people risking their lives to cross in small boats to enter the UK ?

Wow! Germanshepherdsmum would you really be happy to see this!
