Labour. Our next Government.

You only had to watch Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, launching the new six-pledge card thing in Essex on Thursday. She bounced onto the stage with that expression politicians have the morning after a huge victory. Her face was one big soporific smile and she’s clearly been away attending a John Prescott word-mangling masterclass. “We aren’t,” she said, although she actually said “we are”, “promising the world,” which she quickly corrected to “the earth”, before adding: “But we are promising that what we are confident on we can deliver on.” Which I had to listen back to about six times to check I had it word for word.

Rachel Reeves then promised to “never play fast and loose with the public finances”. Let’s see how her VAT on private schools policy works out – indications are that already parents are eyeing up state-school alternatives for this September. Ed Miliband is going to “take back control of our destiny”, Yvette Cooper is “giving young people their future back”, while Sir Keir Starmer walked into that room filled with people in suits, tie-less in white shirt sleeves so you could notice him.

It all seems a bit vague. Maybe that’s deliberate?

The last Labour government (Tony Blair and his side kick) introduced the new G.P. and Dental contracts - resulting in no doctors appointments which is the reason everyone including ambulances are queuing to get into A&E and why most of the UK is now without NHS dentistry.
They also invited the rest of the world into this country hence the relentless treck to get here.
Vote labour? You must be bloody joking!!

Yes, they did. I remember we were left without an NHS dentist at all here.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 19-May-24 11:20:00

Yet so many believe Labour will save the NHS. Have they not seen what the devolved Labour administration in Wales has done to the NHS there?

Absolutely correct and once the doctors and dentists accepted these new deals there was no turning back.

Labour also brought in tuition fees and created bedroom tax and the hated zero hours contracts.

No thanks.

People have very short and selective memories don’t they?

Well if the Tories didn't change or improve things in the last 14 years they've been absolutely useless haven't they?

The highest number of dentists was in 2015. It's now at its lowest www.statista.com/statistics/318885/numbers-of-dental-practitioners-in-the-uk/

I'm thinking of voting for Count Binface!

They really do, don’t they? if they didn’t they would never vote Tory again and would instruct their children not to either.this has been the worst 10+ years in living memory politically and nobody should ever underestimate the damage that’s been done to the UK domestically and reputationally.

Interesting how any posts that don’t support Sir Starmer ‘disappear’ Curious.

??? Really, There’s plenty of posters here who don’t like Starmer. Incidentally there’s also plenty of Labour voters who didn’t support Blair and “New Labour” nor his taking us to war!

Elegran Sun 19-May-24 12:32:33

Who is Sir Starmer? He was knighted as Sir KEIR Starmer. There is no need to refer to him by his title, but he is not Sir Starmer.

I'm glad he's not our accountant.

Pretty rich criticism considering Truss etc!!!

Still waiting to hear why I should vote Tory.
Lots of you saying you would not vote Labour, but why should I or anyone vote Tory? What will they do to turn around the fortunes of this country?

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 19-May-24 12:49:36

There are a good many Conservative voters on GN who don’t post on these threads. I do, but refuse to be drawn into the school playground gang comments or answer the goady questions of some of the Labour supporters.

This isn't playground goady.

It is a question that needs to be asked tho. Criticising the LP for anything glad everything but not saying whats good about the Conservative Party into the future is a very valid question.

Wyllow3 Sun 19-May-24 12:57:37

correct: "Criticising the LP for anything and everything"

VioletSky Sun 19-May-24 13:01:19

It's kind of the MOST important question really

Casdon Sun 19-May-24 13:01:51

It’s not the playground, it’s the real world. That’s what debate is about Germanshepherdsmum. There’s no interest in a debate where people state their view and disappear. I know you know this, as you’re by no means averse to posting goady statements yourself, you give as good as you get. I actually think it’s more about people’s robustness, some people are very sensitive and find it personally insulting when their views are challenged, so they back off. I wish they wouldn’t, it would be much more interesting.

VioletSky Sun 19-May-24 13:13:08

Politics isn't football

You aren't supposed to pick a team and cheer them on no matter how badly they play

Ilovecheese Sun 19-May-24 13:13:38

I don't think that Conservative voters should have anything to fear from a Starmer Government. You probably won't notice the difference between him and the Tories.
The Archbishop of Canterbury seems to have finally noticed that getting rid of the two child benefit limit might help children , therefore he is to the left of Starmer on this issue.

It’s what they do in South Wales, Violetsky, that’s how Labour have ruined our NHS!

Casdon Sun 19-May-24 13:29:28

It’s the democratic process Pantglas. I’m sure you’re not saying that the people of the Welsh Valleys are lesser beings - because it’s not a homogenous mass of Labour voters in South Wales. Although on current predictions, I’m in the only constituency in the whole of Wales which will remain Tory after the general election. Aren’t I the lucky one.

Pantglas2 Sun 19-May-24 13:40:57

My county has a Tory mp who probably won’t survive the election and Labour will get in again - it’s not going to change the fact that our health service has been ruined by Labour though Casdon!

MaizieD Sun 19-May-24 13:49:47

I'm curious to know how Labour has ruined the NHS in Wales.

Is it worse than the NHS in England?

Wyllow3 Sun 19-May-24 13:49:51

But Wales spends more on Adult Social Care which is an important part of the picture:

(Nuffield Trust)

There is wide variation in total public expenditure per capita (old age and working age adults). As of 2021, England remains by far the least generous – spending on average £352 per head, compared to £478 in Scotland, £494 in Wales and £550 in Northern Ireland.

While England and Northern Ireland’s old age expenditure per head has remained relatively stable, Scotland’s old age expenditure has fallen considerably by 21% in the last 10 years.

Wales has seen the biggest increase in spending in support for older people, with a 17% increase in real terms since 2020/21."
