I am not sure if it will be possible over the next 42 days, but I thought it would be fun to try to see. How the polls perform after the various gaffs that the politicians will inevitably make.

Whilst the gap is huge at the moment, it will almost certainly close as the days go by.

I think I’ll use Politico (poll of polls)

I would love to stay up all night but we’re going on holiday on the 5th. However, in 2019, the exit polls at 10 pm, had the results pretty well perfectly. I was at a friend’s house and younger son texted me.

LizzieDrip Fri 21-Jun-24 21:52:41

That referendum changed something about this country and the people in it

I agree MayBe. I think it drove a wedge through the middle of the country (well, 48-52) which still remains, even after all these yearssad

Ladyleftfieldlover if the election goes your way, what a lovely start to your holidayflowers

Absolutely, LizzieDrip!

Yes! Like llfl I am going on holiday on the 5th, but i won’t sleep so will definitely be up for at least part of the night.

I don’t want to miss my Portillo moment. Not sure who it will be but a joy when I recognise the moment.

maybee I am hoping that a Labour government will end the hate and division. Not immediately but slowly over time the sort of hate we’ve seen these past few years will dissolve snd we get back to something more civilised.

Everything crossed of course.

Iam64 Sat 22-Jun-24 08:26:55

A friend said she’ll sleep between 9 pm and 3 am then watch, I might try this approach but I do need a good night’s kip

We’re planning on watching the close of poll / turnout stuff till about 11 then going up to shower etc and come down in our pj’s and sit it out till prob 4 or 5. I’m trying to think of some sustaining snacks. Making sure to have nothing happening the next day.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Jun-24 16:19:23

I have decided (this might change) at the moment it will be Mercer who will be my Portillo moment. What he has said about an opponent is unforgivable.

LizzieDrip Sat 22-Jun-24 19:55:15

I’ve got several preferred Portillo moments:

Jeremy Hunt
Penny Mordant
Geoffrey Cox - such an arrogant, bombastic man who deserves to be brought down a peg or two.

WW re why I’m sceptical of the polls, I read an interesting piece on Sky News online today. In effect, someone at LPHQ says they simply dare not think they will win. He said ‘Labour hearts have been broken so many times over the years, we just can’t get our hopes up too high’.

I think I feel the same🙈

winterwhite Sat 22-Jun-24 20:36:36

My weathervane seat is Portsmouth North.

I’ve come across a poll site called Electoral Calculus. In addition to predictions it lists stats for each constituency plus something called ‘Tribe’ 😳. Godalming & Ash (Jeremy Hunt) is down as ‘Kind yuppy’…

I think I’m hanging out for Rees-Mogg. And I’ve read today that Truss might lose which would definitely be a Portillo moment.

Casdon Sat 22-Jun-24 21:15:43

That’s who I’m waiting for too Siope, he’s Beaker.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Jun-24 21:31:05

That made me grin - delightful.

LizzieDrip Sat 22-Jun-24 22:10:49

Oo, I’d forgotten about Rees-Mogg and Truss. I’m adding them to my Portillo listgrin

Whitewavemark2 Sun 23-Jun-24 07:55:14

Labour are saying that they reckon that the polls are wrong. Well, I don’t think that I disagree, but I do hope that they are not so wrong that in fact there will be a Tory majority.

If that is the case then I reckon they should be banned.

Iam64 Sun 23-Jun-24 08:18:29

The polls may not have the majority correct but listen to any phone in, any audience at debates etc and the mistrust of the tories is loud and clear. People know what they’ve experienced and who is responsible

Casdon Sun 23-Jun-24 08:25:50

I think you’re right Iam64, I don’t think the majority will be as large as predicted, but I don’t think it will be just the Tories who benefit because the electorate is completely disillusioned. I’m still betting on the Lib Dem’s coming up on the rails.

Iam64 Sun 23-Jun-24 08:27:53

Yes, it’s hard to listen to so many disillusioned people, many saying the won’t vote.

LizzieDrip Sun 23-Jun-24 10:47:28

Yes Casdon I think the Lib Dem’s will benefit from a lot of tactical voting.

WW after you mentioning Johnny Mercer as your Portillo moment, I googled what he’s said (I hadn’t heard anything about it). It’s unforgivable. Isn’t Mercer a veteran himself? He should know better!

LizzieDrip Sun 23-Jun-24 11:09:40

According to Adam Bolton (Sky News online):

if the Conservatives win this election the entire political polling industry should be shut down for being wrong and useless

Strong words indeed, but I agree with him. We’ll just have to wait and see🙈

Yes it is dreadful, particularly that mercer himself is ex-military. He must know that the Labour candidate can’t talk about his military service ( i reckon he was in the SBS) and so felt able to accuse him of lying.

Why! Just why!

Boasting is never a nice trait, Mr.Mercer called the Labour candidate out for boasting about his service record.

All the forces and ex forces people I know never talk about their combat missions, due to them being harrowing.

LizzieDrip Sun 23-Jun-24 11:55:59

GG Mercer has accused the Labour candidate of more than ‘boasting’ about his military career. He’s accused him of lying about it!

Whitewavemark2 Sun 23-Jun-24 12:00:52

But he didn’t that is the point. Mercer knows full well that Thomas is unable to talk about his military record because of its sensitivity. Thomas happened to mention that he’d been in combat - which military person has not mentioned that!

Mercer then accused him of being a liar knowing full well that sensitive missions (SBS?) can never be mentioned, and took full advantage of that fact.

The man is a menace.
