Anybody else who doesn't know who to vote for?

I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-May-24 12:36:44

LizzieDrip there is nothing I have heard from Labour over the last few years that has persuaded me to vote for them.

I would need to know a lot more about their so called Commercial Tax , what they intend to do regarding the frozen Personal Allowance. Their intentions regarding the higher tax brackets and of course the nine of contention that is Inheritance Tax.

I have no idea where the pledged extra 6,500 new teachers are going to come from.

The magic number of 40,000 more NHS appointments a week? Apparently hospitals/clinics/GP’s will work later and at weekends. Our two nearest hospitals already run clinics at weekends and into the evenings.

Our GP practice is already open 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 8am-12 noon on Saturdays.

It takes years to train Doctors, Nurses, radiologists etc., along with teachers realistically this magic number will not be achieved in Labours first term.

I listened to the interview this morning and starmer quite rightly says it can’t all be done at once so hes not prepared to make promises he can’t be sure he can keep.

It seems to me judging by listening to conservatives on the today programme and question time over-the last couple of days is that the way Conservatives will fight this election is to spend as much time as possible slandering Labour people and their policies.
Already it’s reported that there is pressure being put on parts of the media not to support Labour, but nothing at all said about how they will go about sorting out their mess and their broken promises, too many to list, over the last 14 years.
They have been a disgrace.

A disgrace and a disaster!

Purplepixie Fri 24-May-24 12:38:52

I’ll decide on the day. Not convinced by any of them.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-May-24 12:48:22

All too predictable, silverlining. The pressure is there because of who owns the papers.

Mollygo Fri 24-May-24 12:55:30

The way both parties will fight this election is to spend as much time as possible slandering the other party’s people and their policies.

‘‘Twas ever thus.

LizzieDrip Fri 24-May-24 12:59:38

Yes, of course, we know that the Labour Party is not only fighting against all the other opposing parties, but also against the vast majority of the media. Truly a mountain to climbsad

They’ve been trying, for months, to find some dirt to throw at Starmer and they haven’t been able to find anything so they’re now just coming up with saying he won’t keep his promises. This from a government that promised how many new hospitals?

Exactly. We know far too little about some very important things. And wealth tax hasn’t gone away, it will simply not be spoken about at present for obvious reasons. I hope to see Starmer being seriously grilled in the proposed debates.

The two main parties are the same book in a different cover with strong links to the WEF and The Great Reset, written by Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum. The book of the same title is on sale on Amazon, in case anyone thinks it’s a conspiracy theory.
I do feel ultimately, our parties, or its Leaders are ‘selected’ rather than ‘elected’ as the amount of revolving door PMs we’ve recently had, proves.
So who would I vote for 🤔
I’m sceptical. But I’d try an alternative and go for Reform UK. Their manifesto sits comfortably with me. But there are never any guarantees.

Greta Fri 24-May-24 13:36:29

Was the Tory promise of 40 new hospitals, the levelling up, the take-back-control, stop the boats, food getting cheaper with new trade deals post Brexit etc just empty words then?

They certainly haven’t been able to fulfil their 2019 GE election promises.

Is that to do with Covid-19, the invasion of Ukraine and other global issues? We will never know.

U.K. is apparently now the fourth largest exporter.

U.K. economy is set to grow more/quicker than France, Germany and several other developed countries. (Source IMF)

Food prices, definitely related to Covid and Ukraine.

Cossy Fri 24-May-24 13:42:16

I think it’s pretty obvious that any taxes, direct or otherwise, are going to be levelled at are wealthiest citizens, whether one feels this is fair or not, it’s the whole basis of socialism. It’s Labour’s version of “levelling up” and they’ve never made a secret of this.

I’m still waiting though for the benefits of austerity and Brexit and the results and outcome of “levelling up”, or did I blink and miss it all grin

Ukraine is the leading producer/exporter of grain globally, think how much grain is relevant to both food production and as an ingredient.

Our energy prices and fuel have sky rocketed (than you President Putin) all relevant to both food production and transportation.

I wonder what you (and Labour) class as ‘wealthy’?

Cossy Fri 24-May-24 13:57:48

GSM I’m talking about the top 5% of earners, no one else.

That my personal view. No idea tbh what the LP view as “wealthy”, I appreciate it’s all relative.

Iam64 Fri 24-May-24 14:01:17

My constituency is a marginal that usually votes in the mp representing the party that forms a government. We went Labour in 97. Our good KP lost by 400 votes to the current Conservative in 2019. Anti Corbyn comments dominated when canvassing. Our current mp doesnt live here, over 150 miles away but he is visible.
We have an excellent Labour candidate this time. She previously worked for the Labour mp, lives here, has a 2 year old, her husband a local head teacher - she’s active locally so fingers crossed she’ll win.
Wherever I lived, I vote for the candidate most likely to beat the conservative
Those who criticise Labour on trans/not being left enough would be wise to be careful about a Green vote

Smileless2012 Fri 24-May-24 14:06:40

I don't know who I'll be voting for Iam but I do know it wont be the Green Party.

Hear hear.

I am leaning towards Reform.
Dont know if they will put up a candidate here.

As it happens, our MP I quite like.

I may do what I have done before, and vote for a minor candidate.

I so wish people wouldnt autmatically keep voting for one of the two main partes.
And then complain there is no one to vote for!
When there ballot often has up to 10 candidates on it. [Not in Scotland as I understand it].

All in all, I am clear as mud really.

Heaven help us if the majority of people vote on a “gut feeling

Well what are you voting on promises/blind faith that it will all pan right? Starmer or any on his front benches have no track record on running the country do they.

Plus I am sick to the back teeth of "manifestos", which are able to be ripped up at a drop of a hat nowadays.
And not that many people then complain!

Salti Fri 24-May-24 14:23:00

I have no idea who I will vote for. As things stand it will definitely not be the Conservatives, Labour, Libdems or Greens. I have no idea yet what other candidates we may have. We have one rule in our house. If you don't vote, don't moan afterwards.

Actually, on reflection, I’d amend that to top 3%.
