I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

How I agree with Nicenanny3, she is spot on! I will vote for Reform, Nigel Farage really cares about this country. The last thing we need is to be dragged back into the hated EU.

If he cares so much about this country how come he’s planning to go to America to support Trump?

I won’t vote for Labour as they are not clear, to me at any rate, on protecting women’s issues. Some of them, not all, appear too Woke for me.

What exactly do you mean by ‘woke’?

dizzygran Mon 27-May-24 22:04:50

Undecided. Don't trust Starmer. Happy with my pension - no matter what they say i think Labour will take money
off us. Sunak seems better than Starmer - don't like Starmer's I was poor made good talk. Thinking back to the Blair government. That was pretty awful. They got in under Education Education banner and made a real mess of things. I guess I will decide on the day. I won't vote Green or LD in a main election

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 27-May-24 22:23:35

Strange that Starmer appeals to ‘ordinary people’. His school became fee-paying whilst he was there. After a first degree he studied for a second degree and was called to the Bar - not a route for a poor person by any means but he would have us all believe that’s what he was.

MissAdventure Mon 27-May-24 22:35:15

Ordinary people don't necessarily need someone like Wayne Slob as PM.

We all know that mps are where they are through hard work.

Why shouldn't they come from comfortable means?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 27-May-24 22:48:14

My point is that he pretends, he tries to deceive.

Callistemon21 Mon 27-May-24 23:05:48

He couldn't help the fact that his grammar school became fee-paying while he was a pupil there, though.
Those who were already there did not have to pay fees.
There must be many of us who went to grammar school.

The school I attended became 100% fee paying while I was there, but my parents didn't pay any fees. Apparently, Starmer received a bursary for his sixth form studies. He would have received a means-tested grant for his undergraduate studies. He achieved a first, so very probably had a grant for his postgrad year at Oxford.

So GSM are you actually saying KS is lying about his background? If this were the case, I’m sure the right wing press would have ‘exposed’ him by now. It would be very easy to prove / disprove. I’m also sure they will have been trying to find something on him for years.

Wyllow3 Tue 28-May-24 00:14:51

We've gone into his background in great detail other thread.

It's fairly clear - ordinary beginnings, made good by working hard at school and later at Uni. No deception involved.

Enough people seem to need to know how people got to be where they are now, its part of who they are.

Conservative government has been a disaster and we desperately need a change. I suggest that anyone who is undecided looks carefully at exactly what Labour are saying they will or will not do. There is a lot of false information out there. Statistics show that the Rwanda policy is not stopping the small boats. Look to the facts then make up your minds.

DiamondLily Tue 28-May-24 06:37:10

This may sway the pensioner vote a bit, to the Tories:

“The Conservatives have promised to raise the tax-free pension allowance via a "Triple Lock Plus" if they win the general election.
Under the plans, the personal allowance for pensioners will increase at least 2.5% or in line with the highest of earnings or inflation.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the scheme "shows we are on the side of pensioners," who the Tories say will save £275 by 2030.”

Plus, the so called “shy Tory/undecided” voting:

yellowfox Tue 28-May-24 08:03:51

Don't want Conservatives to continue wtih all the back stabbing and in fighting and absolutely useless at controlloing the out of control immigration.
Labour will be even worse and certainly will not have control over the boats. Starmer will attempt to get us back in the EU if he gets the chance. The worst possible move - look how they treated us after Brexit!
It will be Reform for me.

NanKate Tue 28-May-24 08:11:07

Maybee70 perhaps I have used the wrong word ‘woke’ but what I mean is that ‘some’ Labour MPs put trans rights ahead of women’s rights which is very worrying to me. Our grandmothers and further back, fought for women’s rights and I am worried that Sir Keir and others in his Party do not stand up for women as I believe they should.

Of course some of the MPs in other Parties may also have this trait, that’s why I am concerned and confused.

Finally before I am wrongly accused of being transphobic, I am not, I just want women to be valued and not to have their Rights diminished.

Nicenanny3

Also I forgot the awful sneering Emily Thornberry who looked down her nose at the hard working white van man and the English Flag no thanks.

hard working white van man? really?

yes hard working white van man, traders such as plumbers, electricians mostly use white vans, hence English people call then white van man, sigh

Iam64 Tue 28-May-24 08:39:44

Starmer achieved academic and career success by working hard. I know a number of excellent barristers whose origins were working class. One of the best failed his A levels first time round.

Thanks for explaining what you meant by ‘woke’ NanKate. It’s meaningless otherwise. I share the concerns about the erosion of women’s rights but I understand the reluctance of some to be drawn into debates that don’t acknowledge the needs of the silent majority of trans people with such aggressive anti terf campaigns led by a noisy aggressive minority.

She pointed out that her brother was a white van man.

I don’t think any MP fights for women as much as Jess Phillips.

Iam64 Tue 28-May-24 08:42:55

She did indeed MayBee70 but nicenanny3 isn’t remotely interested in anything positive related to the Labour party

MayBee70 Tue 28-May-24 08:46:21

I, too, worry about the erosion of women’s rights. But I don’t think it’s the biggest problem facing the country at this moment in time. I’m far more concerned about the state of the NHS and other issues.

I always thought that the universal derogatory use of the term 'white van man' arose from the fact that they seem to be the most appalling drivers on UK roads... 🤔

True, like you are not remotely interested in anything positive about Reform. Pot kettle comes to mind.
