Having a title doesn’t make Emily Thornberry a snob.
Being so condescending towards a man with England flags outside his house does make her a snob.
I’m amazed that anyone finds anything to defend about her.
Farage fails to report 5 million gift!
I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

Bit she wasn't condescending.
Unless you really, really wanted to read it that way...
Taking a photo of someone's house isn't condescending??

Well, Ed Miliband and Rachel Reeves read it that way and who are we to argue?
Ed Miliband sacked her.
Rachel Reeves was even more furious.
Ed Miliband was right to sack Emily Thornberry from the shadow cabinet because she was “condescending and disrespectful” towards working people and damaged Labour’s election prospects when she tweeted a picture of a house decked out in St George’s flags, Rachel Reeves, the shadow work and pensions secretary, has said.
In some of the strongest criticism of the former frontbencher, Reeves said that Thornberry’s tweet was contrary to the values of the Labour party.
Speaking on the Sunday Politics programme on BBC1, Reeves said: “I thought Emily was being condescending and disrespectful of people I went into politics to serve, so I think it’s right that she went. I think it’s right that she’s no longer in her job, because what she was suggesting doesn’t represent the ethos and the values of the Labour party.

I'm afraid that I do find her attitude generally patronising and sneering.
If Labour do win then I hope she's not brought to the forefront of the Cabinet.
It doesn’t matter how I read it Maizie.
It matters how her fellow Labour politicians read it, and that’s exactly how they read it.
You clearly approve of her actions.
I don’t believe Emily Thornberry is any more condescending to any particular ‘ class’
I’m surprised you see her as aspiring to represent ‘the working class’ Maddyone. She wants to be part of a Labour government that represents her constituents. The Labour party is currently being criticised from within for not being ‘working class’ enough
What a class conscious country we remain
I could only ever see it as critical of white van man and people who display big St George flags when England are playing a big football game.
To be rather more frivolous - Ms Thornberry just comes across to me as the epitome of the old- fashioned Tory matron from the Shires, the Hyacinth Bucket who accidentally found herself in the Labour Party

Me too! I really can't see any alternative explanation, which is why it would be good if MaizieD could give us hers.

I think that if people are determined to be offended they'll be offended.
I suspect that Milliband and Reeves made a political decision in the face of the manufactured outrage.
I agree, and I have.
I won't dignify that narrow minded comment with a response, though. It's a waste of time.

That doesn't answer the question What did you think she meant by tweeting that photo with that caption does it?
You have your suspicions about Milliband and Reeves, and see those of us that thought the tweet offensive as being if people are determined to be offended they'll be offended. implying there's no justification for being offended.
So it would be very enlightening if you could tell us why you think she tweeted that and what she was implying by it.
Sorry for the long nested quote, but I think it needs the entirety to make sense.
I did actually say why I thought she had tweeted in my first or second post on the subject but you were all so busy Thornberry hating that it seems to have been missed.

I don't hate anyone.
She just seems totally out of place in the Labour party.
I wonder what your thoughts might be if Tory Minister had made that comment?
It would be interesting to know if you could answer that too.
Diane Abbott is readmitted into the Labour party but it is unclear whether or not she be standing as a Labour candidate in July.

Having spent a while going through the thread from the beginning again I've found....
1st post I always thought that the universal derogatory use of the term 'white van man' arose from the fact that they seem to be the most appalling drivers on UK roads... 🤔
2nd post I'm a grandmother, too. I don't need any instructions on how to suck eggs.
I am very well aware of how the phrase is used politically.
They are still bloody awful drivers...
extract from 3rd post She posted a picture of a house displaying 3 St George's flags with a white van parked outside. Her comment was 'Image from Rochester'.
That was the tweet all the fuss was over. Where did she say 'white van man'?
So what was she trying to convey in her tweet? That the typical Rochester resident displays 3 St George's flags and has a white transit van parked on their drive? I think she's way out of touch if that's what she believes. You still didn't actually say what you think she was trying to indicate by her tweet.
I don't 'hate' Thornberry, I just get the impression she's a snob, and rather condescending.
And you obviously have no trouble stereotyping, or should that be 'hating', anyone who drives a white van.
They are still bloody awful drivers ...
What, every single one?
That is stereotyping prejudice.

If she'd posted a picture of a treelined road with BMWs and Audis parked on the drives, just for the context of the neighbourhood, would she have been accused of sneering at the middle classes?
*
Sorry, was that a bit too subtle?
Does posting a picture of somewhere automatically mean one is being critical of, or offensive about, the subject?
