Starmer’s a decent bloke!

I know people will immediately tell me it’s part of the Labour election agenda but I keep coming across random short stories about small acts of kindness by Starmer. These stories aren’t major incidents and largely involve simple examples where Starmer has encouraged someone by action or deed. Whether electioneering hype or not, I can’t imagine reading similar stories about our current PM as sadly he seems so disconnected from the general public!

I hope Starmer doesn’t get in, I can’t stand him or his party. I remember the disaster last time they governed, the Tories are still trying to sort it out amid very difficult times. I like Rishi, he gets on with things quietly and so far has done what he said he would. He took on an enormous challenge and Rome wasn’t built in a day. He gets our vote every time.

Have you been reading "The Daily Express"?

I remember the disaster last time they governed,

Goodness yes. It was utter hell, wasn't it?

The NHS was ranked among the top OECD country's health services. You could get same day GP appointments and dental treatment on the NHS. Waiting lists were low and waits for treatment were short. You didn't spend whole days in A &E and ambulances didn't take hours to respond to call outs.

Schools had enough money to employ support staff to work with needy pupils and there were outside agencies working with them too.
School buildings weren't crumbling, there were even new ones being built.

There were Sure Start Centres widely available to help support parents with preschool children to give them a good start in life

Police actually responded to calls and investigated crimes. The criminal justice system worked so that victims of crime didn't have wait years for the perpetrator's to come to trial. The probation service worked.

Our rivers and beaches weren't awash with sewage

Local councils weren't going bankrupt because of shortage of funds available to carry out their statutory duties, they were even able to run leisure centres and libraries and ment potholes.

And to cap it all, when the Global Financial Crisis hit the Labour government rescued the banks which were about to go bankrupt so that their customers didn't suddenly find there was no money in their accounts.

Yup, it was terrible..

That comment to Shropshirelass is incredibly rude!

The challenge being to undo all the damage Truss had done you mean? Or the damage done by 14 years of Tory rule??

Well said MaizieD.
Shropshire lass - I find it hard to believe you lived through the same period in our country’s history as I did - 1997 - 2024 and reached the conclusions you set out.

I can remember those days and the country has changed dramatically since then... really good post Maizie

Ah halcyon days indeed MaizieD before mass immigration changed the responsibilities of said councils perhaps?

BTW we have a wonderful new library in Urmston (check it out all under the Tories) and a fantastic leisure centre that has just been upgraded pretty spectacularly last year! Maybe we are just very fortunate in Trafford?

Mind you .. the potholes are still annoying!

Local councils can’t meet their statutory duties because central government cut funding to the bone. I don’t understand why poor northern towns got less money than Kensington and `Chelsea.

Urmstongran Fri 31-May-24 20:37:30

I’m not racist. I’m explaining why some Councils (who have actually complained about this very issue) have had to stretch their monies further these days - compared to when Labour last ran things is all. Goodness you are touchy but don’t let some facts get in the way of your rose tinted spex eh?

I remember my true blue mother being quite shocked when I told her my life was a lot better under Tony Blair's government. As a very low paid couple with two children things seemed much easier for us.

Iam64 Fri 31-May-24 20:47:16

And another problem for poor northern towns is that because rents are lower families, including asylum seekers are dispersed to then north to avoid housing benefit costs in the south east

Urmstongran Fri 31-May-24 21:02:58

Very true Iam. 👏 I think some folk forget this.

Iam64 Fri 31-May-24 21:12:31

I’m not against providing housing for people in need. It should be funded by central not local funds
We have a brilliant refugee support group here and a school for children arriving with no Engkish.

Starmer made a fool of himself today flying to a climate conference in a private jet. 🤣🤣🤣. His excuse was “we needed to get there in a hurry.”

Anniebach Fri 31-May-24 22:35:27

Excuse or explanation

"Does Rishi Sunak fly private jet?
Out-of-touch Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is well-known for his use of private jets, including racking up a bill of over £500,000 in the space of less than two weeks . Now his high-flying lifestyle is clearly starting to affect his judgement – and his Government's policies.19 Jan 2024

They all use private jets; party leaders, the king, Prince Harry, pop stars, business executives. All of them, they don’t want to rough it on EasyJet do they? And then tell us to fly less often. Oh the irony!

Pantglas2 Sat 01-Jun-24 06:06:05

So, so true Maddyone! I’ve always said that when they stop flying, so will I!

Being nice is a virtue in a friend or a neighbour, not so good in a politician. Starmer is trying to please everyone at the moment because he wants their votes. He has to learn to do what is right for the country and that can mean being ruthless sometimes.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 08:33:20

. No one gets to be a top QC, ceo of a huge organisation, or leader of the Labour Party if they lack the ability to be ruthless when necessary

We know that thanks but doesn’t Starmer and his clique make a meal of it!! Then he goes and does exactly the same at a CLIMATE conference. He didn’t think that one through did he?

well he has just got rid of our local gay, left wing MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle and replaced him with someone who doesn't even live in the constituency.. that is NOT pleasing people down here
