Breaking news, just now.

I have mixed feelings about this, and about Dianne Abbott. I admire her achievements in what is still a white male dominated profession, she has achieved a great deal and suffered appalling treatment, online threats and such. BUT, when I listen to her, she makes my teeth itch, very condescending and patronising, speaks to interviewers as if she is exasperated with a five year old. As to being permitted to stand as a Labour candidate, it looks to me as if Starmer is clearing out the people who lost the last election ie Corbyn and Abbott.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 11:42:03

Starmer said he would clear the Party of antisemitism

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 11:44:53

There appears to be some real ‘confusion’ around this issue. Times say she’s banned; BBC says it’s received text from Abbot saying she’s banned; X post from Abbot saying she’ll be campaigning for a Labour victory and is not banned. The ‘rumour mill’ is alive and well. When the truth does eventually emerge, I trust the media outlets that are currently conveying incorrect information (what used to be known as lies) will apologise??? I won’t hold my breath!

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 11:50:00

Well atm I tend to believe Abbots own tweet (sorry, "x")

Maybe the confusion is as follows

assuming that as standing Labour MP she would automatically re stand

versus

having to join the other contenders in a selection process

I'm oddly fascinated by the assertion that Angela Rayner is cosying up to Muslim males to get votes.

Just when you think the bar won't go any lower.

maddyone Wed 29-May-24 11:56:34

I’m getting confused myself, is she? Isn’t she? Is she? Isn’t she?
Who knows?

Is she well enough to stand? Certainly got the impression that she was not a well lady.

I don’t know whether she’s ill or not, but I saw a more recent picture of her today and she doesn’t look well, in my opinion. But I’m not a doctor, so what do I know?

Naturally I am delighted to have the Labour Whip restored and to be a member of the PLP.
Thank you to all those who supported me along the way.
I will be campaigning for a Labour victory.
But I am very dismayed that numerous reports suggest I have been barred as a candidate.
(Diane Abbott on X)

Reports suggest is very ambiguous, isnt it. What a shambles.

MrsSquirrel Wed 29-May-24 12:04:48

Abbott has spoken to the BBC and Xtweeted about it. The Labour press office are silent. I wonder who gains by the continuing confusion?

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 12:07:53

This article contradicts itself no wonder the confusion

Why don’t the media outlets confirm facts before putting them out as gospel truth! They all want to be the one with the ‘breaking news’ regardless of whether it’s true or not. I’m inclined to believe Abbot’s own X post too!

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 12:10:17

MrsSquirrel

Abbott has spoken to the BBC and Xtweeted about it. The Labour press office are silent. I wonder who gains by the continuing confusion?

To be cynical, I think Abbot hopes to gain. I say let her stand alongside the other candidates as once candidates are announced the local L party members get to choose.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 12:12:33

Abbot will want to attack the Party, Corbyn has been banned,
they have been very close for years

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 12:13:12

She spoke that she had been banned. This gets more and more confusing.🤔

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 12:22:17

Abot has not been banned from standing as a Labour candidate

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 12:37:29

Starmer has just confirmed she has not been banned (12.30)
I player news

"Abbott from standing
We've a bit more for you now on that exchange between Keir Starmer and a reporter in the West Midlands, during which the Labour leader denied Diane Abbott's claim that she's been barred from standing as a Labour candidate at the election.

Asked to confirm whether the news is true - "yes or no" - Starmer tells the reporter "no, that's not true".

"No decision has been taken to bar Diane Abbott," he continues.

"The process that we were going through ended with the restoration of the whip the other day, so she's a member of the Parliamentary Labour Party, and no decision has been taken barring her."

HousePlantQueen Wed 29-May-24 12:42:23

So, I wonder, is this the press not fact checking, or Ms Abbott making things more difficult for Starmer?

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 12:48:52

Either confusion, or the latter.
The alternative candidates share Abbot's concerns locally, if you look them up.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 12:51:46

The latter

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 13:04:36

She said she had been banned. Labour HQ have said that no decision has been made, although will be before June 4th.

She’s either genuinely confused or trying to cause disruption.🤷‍♀️

OurKid1 Wed 29-May-24 13:33:21

Just watched Starmer on the lunchtime news - he denies completely that she has been banned.

MrsSquirrel Wed 29-May-24 13:51:17

I don't think Abbott herself is confused. She may have other faults, but she is not stupid. Since he became leader, Starmer has been sidelining the Corbynites in the party. She doesn't want to go quietly.

Sarnia Wed 29-May-24 13:55:03

Rishi Sunak on the lunchtime news says this matter was resolved 5 months ago so why didn't Labour act upon it then. If true it's lousy timing because it doesn't make the Labour Party look good.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 14:00:12

I think it doesn't make Abbot look good.

Sunak was wrong, the matter was not resolved, because no decisions had been made regarding standing for an election or not

Yes, ideally the L party should have finalised matters one way or another sooner but they didn't know a GE was going to be called.

Corbyn made his decision to stand as Independent.

Primrose53 Wed 29-May-24 14:12:53

Starmer says categorically she has not been banned. She must have got it wrong, like everything else she goes near.
