Breaking news, just now.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 14:23:43

Thats unfair. she was a trailblazer for many years including having to face a great deal of racism, and a good constituency MP and got a lot right too.

But LP politics apart - no one can go on forever or be effective forever.

Grantanow Wed 29-May-24 14:33:29

That she is banned seems to be a story originating with her.

Iam64 Wed 29-May-24 14:59:56

It did Grantanow, seem to originate from DA. She was a disaster during the last election campaign in the eyes of the majority of voters. She has a lot of support in her constituency and amongst the left. She will always be an important figure given her achievements , especially her status as the first black female MP
I wonder if she could be persuaded to bow out to the Lords

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 15:05:01

I think it doesn't make Abbot look good

I agree Wyllow. If DA really cared about the Labour Party and the good of the people of this country she would stop confusing this issue with conflicting statements - trying to make KS look bad on the cusp of an election. If she hates KS and the Labour Party so much, then stand down and stand as an Independent. This ‘stirring the pot’ does her no favours - by making KS look ‘bad’, she doesn’t make herself look ‘good’. This election is bigger than DA! Of course, the Tories and their client media are milking it for all its worth.

Wonder what Abbott thinks about the 20% VAT on private schools. Perhaps she doesn’t care as her’s have graduated.

Urmstongran Wed 29-May-24 15:08:51

Ponder on this … we might like to recall that Abbott was never given a ministerial portfolio by Labour in their 13 years in office, though her ex-boyfriend Corbyn during his ludicrous tenure of the Party leadership in opposition made her his Shadow Home Secretary - a position for which she had zero credentials.

I think she’s a Marmite figure to be honest.

Iam64 Wed 29-May-24 15:10:31

I think yiur3 being kind bringing Marmite into this urmstongran

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 15:12:46

Yes, I love marmite

Oreo Wed 29-May-24 15:18:54

So do I, tho it won’t spread like it used to on my toast, I blame
Brexit/Boris/Corbyn/Aliens.
🤭

There appears to be some real ‘confusion’ around this issue. Times say she’s banned; BBC says it’s received text from Abbot saying she’s banned; X post from Abbot saying she’ll be campaigning for a Labour victory and is not banned. The ‘rumour mill’ is alive and well. When the truth does eventually emerge, I trust the media outlets that are currently conveying incorrect information (what used to be known as lies) will apologise??? I won’t hold my breath!

If DA just told the truth we would know.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 15:23:07

The truth is , no decision has yet been made

Urmstongran Wed 29-May-24 15:23:29

Well I said Marmite because she is such a divisive figure. Her constituents love her. I’m not a fan but can recognise her popularity with some.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 15:25:32

I still wonder if she thought that the whip being returned meant she’d resume her position as standing MP candidate but when it emerged it didn’t mean that ….

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 15:27:18

Absolutely Anniebach, and I wish DA would just say that rather than tweeting one thing, texting something else etc. It’s not very edifying on her part.

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 15:39:54

During the last election, when Corbyn was leader, she made mistakes, about facts, at most interviews. She went out wearing odd shoes, and blamed the menopause (at 65?), so I’m not sure if she has not got a genuine problem.

Perhaps, as she’s now 70, it’s time for her to retire and perhaps write her memoirs, or whatever.

She’s not bringing anything to Labour’s chances.😗

Urmstongran Wed 29-May-24 15:59:12

I think the odd shoes thing was proven to be a ‘meme’ ie false?

I don’t know. I’ve looked at links from that time, and no one suggested it was fake.

Who knows?

Sadiq Khan has said that Diane Abbott should be treated with “the respect she deserves” amid growing backlash against Labour’s handling of her case.

The Mayor of London told the Evening Standard Ms Abbott was a “trailblazer” and recalled how seeing her in 1987 “made a huge impact on me in a positive sense of the word”.

Mr Khan added: “She’s someone who’s done a huge amount for Hackney, for London, for our country. So I think it’s really important that she’s given the respect she deserves.”

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 16:24:45

Back in the day, she WAS a trailblazer. She withstood a huge amount of racism.

Kudos to her.

But, now, she’s either confused or she’s trying to disrupt the Labour campaign.

She’s got a huge majority, so obviously a good local MP, so she could, as Corbyn is doing, and stand as an independent.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 16:26:33

Respect? does he mean her letter about Jews should have been
ignored

No, obviously not.

But, racism comes in all forms.🙂

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 16:52:41

Agreed DiamondLily. If it’s the former, I feel for her; if it’s the latter I have no respect for her. We don’t know which it is and, maybe, we’ll never know.

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 16:57:23

Not trying to provoke a fight, but I genuinely see her point in her letter. It seemed quite alright to me?

As a person, I'm ambivalent about her. She seems unwell in some way.
The fact that she was in a relationship with JC and sent her child to public school are 2 separate issues.
I do recall she was attacked for having a small can of drink containing alcohol.

MaizieD Wed 29-May-24 17:09:21

I'm glad you said that, zakouma66. I don't feel quite so isolated.

As I posted earlier, I don't think she said anything anti-semitic, which is what she was (and still is on here) castigated for. She did minimise the Jewish experience, though, which I can see was hurtful. Racism is racism, I don't think there is a hierarchy if racism. It's all bad.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 17:17:34

She did minimise the Jewish experience! ! ! !
