Breaking news, just now.

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 17:24:08

Very very complex and emotive subject all round. But she doesn't appear to minimize anything to me?

" The Jewish Experience"
Look at the genocide now in Gaza.

I'm not anti anything .

MissAdventure Wed 29-May-24 17:24:22

She,said that because Jewish people weren't made to sit at the back of buses, it somehow, wasn't such bad racism they faced.

Idoitic statement.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 17:38:24

Looks like its in Abbots hands to decide on next move
(I player live update)

"16:29
Shadow minister asked if he wants Diane Abbott to run for Labour
Here's a bit more from that Labour news conference we mentioned in our earlier post.

In the Q&A section afterwards, a reporter asks shadow minister Darren Jones whether he wants to see veteran MP Diane Abbott running for Labour at the general election.

"Diane has had the whip restored, she's a member of the parliamentary party again," Jones says. "If she wants to talk to the Labour Party about standing at the next election, I'm sure that conversation will be taking place."

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 17:42:08

No, Jews didn’t have to sit in the back of buses, they were driven out of Russia because they were Jews. Obviously she
hasn’t heard of Progroms

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 17:51:56

“It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism. In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus"

Isn't this how we have got ourselves in the appalling mess?

My hurt is worse than your hurt?

The drama triangle.

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 17:55:56

I think we need to recognise that anti Semitism exists, and other racism exists alongside it.

It’s not a case of top trumps or a race to the bottom.🤷‍♀️

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 17:58:26

Comparing victims of the Holocaust with people with red hair

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 17:58:30

Ah ! so well put. I couldn't formulate the words.

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 18:00:20

( to Diamond)

No Annie, she totally wasn't but God knows I dont have it in me to feed this anymore.

Gaza/ Anti Semitism/ Racism all abhorent.

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 18:04:09

Yes, I agree. October 7th was an outrage. What’s happening in Gaza is an outrage.

I really wish all people could just accept their differences and get along cheerfully, alongside each other.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 18:11:38

She has made the 6.00pm news, seems six unions are supporting her, her bestie Corbyn will be pleased

Casdon Wed 29-May-24 18:24:42

What saddens me is that for all the words, the fight isn’t in her, she is well past her prime. I’m not sure at all that if she does stand and win she will be able to cut it as an MP. I feel sorry for her, because she was such a trailblazer, often misguided but always caring.

What argument are they supporting? No one has banned her from anything. This is looking like disruption for its own sake.

I'm oddly fascinated by the assertion that Angela Rayner is cosying up to Muslim males to get votes.

Just when you think the bar won't go any lower.

Yes my thoughts exactly when I saw the video of Rayner literally begging a room full of Muslim men to vote Labour. Not a woman in sight.

Quite how she squares that with her feminist values I don’t know but, hey, gotta get those Muslim votes!

Iam64 Wed 29-May-24 18:33:24

Good points Casdon.
I heard an orthodox Jewish man talking about how much work DA did to support the establishment of a school for orthodox Jewish girls in her constituency.
I can accept she was trying to claim the racism suffered by black people is life long. I can’t accept her comparing it as much worse than the most well established form of oppression and abuse, the pogroms, the driving out of Jewish people from countries in which they settled, culminating in the Holocaust.
As for adding redheads - don’t make me laugh. It diminishes her argument

I do wonder if Labour hq offered her a seat in the HoL if she stands aside and she refused this and made her first statement suggesting she’d been barred from standing
Let’s hope sone least worst compromise can be reached

It was a very stupid statement!

It’s not a game of my prejudice is worse than yours!

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 18:37:10

With a 33,000 majority, she stands a good chance of winning, even as in independent.

But, at 70, I think she’s probably past her best (politically) and she might be best just retiring and enjoying her life.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 18:47:12

Exactly DiamondLily. I really hope she can find it in herself to stop all this - she is in a position to control the situation. If she chooses to continue attempts to disrupt Labour’s campaign, she won’t do herself any favours. I hope she can be better than that.

Iam64 Wed 29-May-24 18:52:57

I’ve found myself wondering if there would be less sympathy if Dianne was a man

Yes.

Btw, am waiting to see just what she wants/what is this union support for? Not clear at all.

Good point. I think you could be right. Probably little sympathy if she was a man.

1. There was no begging

2. Many communities prefer single sex arrangements. Orthodox Jews for example.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 19:04:16

I can’t recall Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant going on about being victims racism as she does

She was basically pleading for their votes and you know very little about Orthodox Jews and, in any case, there are very few of them in the UK. Jews in general come to that!

In early 2013, several British universities followed University College London by allowing separate seating for men and women during talks organised by certain Muslim groups. At the time, Universities UK, the representative body for British institutions, issued guidelines to say it was happy with this policy, yet some journalists lamented that "the sexist eccentricities of some religions" were being given "priority over women's rights".

By the end of 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesperson had waded into the debate, arguing that "gender segregation" should be banned in all circumstances in British universities, even where audiences voluntarily separated themselves. Universities UK has now dropped its policy pending a review.

Such boundaries between the sexes have long existed in our tradition. In the Bet Hamikdash (Temple), there were places where only women could go and places where only men could enter. Within the men's section, some areas were accessible only to Cohanim and one place restricted solely to the Cohen Gadol, the High Priest. Neither men nor women complained of discrimination or disrespect.
