Trump has been found guilty on all 34 charges by a united jury!

growstuff Fri 31-May-24 04:08:22

Maybe Farage is planning on being proxy President.

mae13 Fri 31-May-24 04:55:03

Gosh yes, guilty!
I was surprised although I have no doubt that it's the correct verdict. He's got away with so much in the past. And if mysoginy were classified as a criminal offence then he'd have been convicted a million times over.

The right decision, all in all.

But: how on earth does such an individual get to be in the White House in the first place and even get remotely near to doing it all again?

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 31-May-24 06:01:09

I’m sure I read that he isn’t allowed to appeal.

mae13 Fri 31-May-24 06:12:07

Trump's Golden Motto: "The law applies to everyone except me!"

But I fear for the members of the jury - Trump's supporters, calling themselves The Proud Boys seem to be a bunch of unhinged yahoos who think arguing with a shotgun is the answer to everything.

I have concerns that this will simply reinforce his ‘look, I’m just like you, the system screws folk like us all the time’ pitch to voters who are poor, dispossessed, and/or genuinely fearful for their role in the USA. It certainly provides another area of common ground with those who are pure small state zealots.

Curtaintwitcher Fri 31-May-24 06:32:13

It was a foregone conclusion. This wouldn't have happened if he didn't still have massive support and a strong chance of being elected again.
He is an unpleasant person but he is what America needs.

Bonnybanko Fri 31-May-24 06:40:50

Merlotgran yes it is a circus, I watched this on tv last night and he’s still refusing to accept what a jury of his peers have decided (guilty on all 34 federal charges I watched his rant afterwards. There’s no doubt he’s shaken up I now hope he gets his just desserts in July
the American people deserve better

NotSpaghetti Fri 31-May-24 06:42:59

I think this is wildly untrue.

It wouldn't have happened if he had been a truthful and honest person.

He has been convicted by ordinary people for falsifying business records.!

Aveline Fri 31-May-24 07:01:12

How anyone could possibly support him is totally unfathomable. Goodness knows what will happen next.

Siope Fri 31-May-24 07:04:46

He is an unpleasant person but he is what America needs

Why? And what is your knowledge base for deciding this?

gmarie Fri 31-May-24 07:23:58

Yes, it is all so cringe-worthy watching the political circus going on here in the US these days. I've taken to not reading the news and just concentrate on local issues and enjoying my sons and grandson. Much happier these days. I will vote, of course, but can't waste any more time watching or reading about that divisive clown.

Being very cynical but I think that will give him a shedload of extra votes. They have different rules there it seems !

You may be spot on! On BBC News last night Gary O'Donoghue was reporting from outside the court and he said a poll had been carried out asking voters whether a guilty verdict would change the way they would vote. 6% said they would be less likely to vote for Trump but 24% said they were more likely to vote for him!

Jaberwok Fri 31-May-24 08:03:01

You show me, apart from perhaps Jimmy Carter, an unblemished President? They're ALL such crooks including Joe Biden, especially his son. Nixon anyone? Kennedy, Raegan? the list goes way back! Trump is no different from the average American President. He just broke the 11th commandment and got found out.

DiamondLily Fri 31-May-24 08:17:23

It won’t affect him standing, and it won’t affect him, if elected.

The Founding Fathers created no rules or laws about this scenario, because they didn’t think it would ever happen.

It’s slightly alarming that the next leader of the “free world” will be either someone with Dementia or a convicted liar/felon.🙄

Whitewavemark2 Fri 31-May-24 08:19:31

It is really quite bizarre - Trump, as a conflicted felon can no longer vote, but can stand for President.

It seems that Trump, contrary to his rhetoric, will be affected by this sentence. Independent (floating voters) are more likely to change their minds and turn away from Trump.

I agree and just have to hope that the floating voters decide enough is enough from him and either vote Biden or refuse to vote at all. You’d think that inciting crowds to violence and hoping to attempt some sort of coup last time around would have been enough for most Republican supporters but apparently not.

My husband, an American who has lived through 14 Presidents, most of them whilst in the USA, and my brother-in-law and my sister-in-law, who remember/have lived through every president since FDR assure me you don’t know what you’re doing asking about

Whitewavemark2 Fri 31-May-24 08:36:17

Trumps rhetoric is so dangerous. Once again he is saying that the system is rigged - it isn’t - the judge is crooked - he isn’t - the courts are partial - they aren’t - and this is feeding into groups like the proud boys snd other hard line maga republicans, with the danger of it spilling over into violence and insurrection.

If Trump is elected it will be both in one go. A double whammy.

Urmstongran Fri 31-May-24 08:40:01

As he often says, “if they can do this to me, think what they can do to you”. They’ve just guaranteed a Trump win. The bookies odds are 6/5 on they think so too. The next few weeks will be interesting. I’m not American but even I thought this won’t be a fair trial. The judge is a Democrat donor and NY is a Democrat stronghold.

I can't help feeling that a system where judges are political appointees rather lays itself open to those sorts of allegations. After all, Trump did it himself when president..

MaizieD Fri 31-May-24 08:54:56

As he often says, “if they can do this to me, think what they can do to you”.

Of course they can, it's called the Rule of Law. Criminals are prosecuted and sanctioned. Presumably Trump is inferring that all his followers are criminals...

Jane43 Fri 31-May-24 08:58:12

I emailed my friend in America last night for her reaction, she says he will appeal and it will probably last years. She also said he is appealing to his supporters for money to help with legal costs and the money is pouring in. She reckons he won’t go to jail and he will be the next President, she isn’t a Trump supporter. What happened to ‘crime doesn’t pay’?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 31-May-24 09:00:54

I do not think this will end well for the USA.

Committed Trump supporters, guns along with an election, a heady mix…

Granniesunite Fri 31-May-24 09:05:32

I can’t listen to him anymore at all and I truly don’t understand how anyone believes a word he says his violent rhetoric and misogynistic remarks tells me excactly what and whohe is.

To my mind he’s a complete and total idiot and a dangerous one at that.
