Anyone watching?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Jun-24 12:39:46

Anyone got any idea how the Tories are going to pay for their promises?

Katie590 Wed 05-Jun-24 12:41:39

It’s becoming clear that the £38 billion was substantially the treasury costing of the policy, and the letter 2 weeks ago was a warning not to enhance it.

The £2000 from every working family was Sunak’s spin, it won’t happen, most will have to come from higher earners, many working families can’t afford £200 let alone £2000.

To make a difference to the NHS and other services tax revenue has got to rise substantially whichever party is in power. Sunak is highlighting tax cuts so he is not aiming to improve services much.

Maddyone, I believe Labour has said that they intend to continue to freeze the tax free allowance as per Tories.

Yes. Kier Starmer was useless. He keeps saying they have a plan but no idea how to implement it nor how to pay for it. ‘When I was Crown Prosecutor’ , well he isn’t now and failed miserably in this debate. I thought Rishi was good. Clear on what his plans are and how to finance them. I also agree with National Service or Community Service for teens, will give some more of a sense of direction. Hope to God he gets in again and is allowed to finish the recovery he has started. It all takes time.

No, Starmer didn’t explore that which was disappointing

But it’s a recovery from problems caused by his own party. And Truss is still in that party.

Sunak lied, though.
Loser.

DiamondLily Wed 05-Jun-24 16:13:26

Sunaks has been caught lying. Not a good look if you’re trying to pretend to be honest.

Yup. Someone being 'useless' in the face of duplicity and bare faced lies is not a mark of weakness in my book. I'm not great with liars myself, when I've met them. I've known some slippery characters over the years, but I don't know if I've come across such an egregious public lie as that one.

LizzieDrip Wed 05-Jun-24 17:27:20

Sunak’s a liar. That’s it. The country has had more than enough of Tory MPs & PMs lying through their teeth to scam the British public.

foxie48 Wed 05-Jun-24 17:41:28

It seems a lot of people don't mind being lied to as long as they "like" the lies, they prefer that to being told the truth. Boris told lies, Trump told lies, there seem to be lots of people who still think they are good leaders so it's no wonder that Sunak thinks he might win the election by telling the same lies over and over again.

Mollygo Wed 05-Jun-24 17:59:16

Foxie48
The problem is that we don’t have an option about voting for a liar whichever of the main 3 parties we vote for. The only difference is which liar?

Isn’t that very depressing foxiesad

Well, I’m feeling I’ve had enough after 14 years of the government, with different leaders, all lying.🙄

Doodledog Wed 05-Jun-24 18:06:46

I couldn't agree more, DL. It's definitely time for a change.

Greta Wed 05-Jun-24 18:07:39

It is very depressing. A lie seems to be acceptable if you get away with it.

Katie590 Wed 05-Jun-24 18:07:59

Here is opposition policy as costed by Treasury the big one is the warm homes scheme.

I so agree LizzieDrip, I guess he thought Boris got away with it for a long time, so I'll do it too. But he hasn't got either the wit or charm to carry it off.

Starmer came across by far the better though, very calm and statesmanlike.

I totally agree, I've had enough of Tory MP's lying to the electorate and privatising the NHS without a mandate, we were cheated by Tories at the last election, cos they didn't put that in their mandate

And me. The next lot can’t possibly be any worse..🫰

Someone on the radio said today that she thought that Starmer came over as a real gentleman - treating the presenter with respect and consideration - whereas Sunak behave like an overgrown student.

Iam64 Wed 05-Jun-24 18:28:54

I thought Sunak was rude, shouty and far to inclined to shout over Starmer as well as the moderator
I voted for Starmer as leader and I don’t regret that, he was the best candidate. He’s a QC or is it KC now. He must have the capacity to be brutal in cross examination and in his role as Labour leader. He’s leading a team of MPs from varied backgrounds and views. He’s leading well, the team is performing well imo. So - I’d like to see more of these skills in not allowing Sunak to shout over him and repeat nonsense

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Jun-24 18:37:48

Sunak now being investigated over the lies.

MissAdventure Wed 05-Jun-24 18:38:38

🥳

winterwhite Wed 05-Jun-24 18:38:44

Easy on the oars. This constant repetition of the words lies and lying makes a necessarily contentious debate uglier than it need be. We may feel strongly, but no need to talk like Donald Trump.

To say 'they're all liars' is absurd.

I don't think the debate will make any difference in the long run but hope that next time the format can play more to Starmer's strengths.

Iam64 Wed 05-Jun-24 18:42:05

Yes - I know I’m tribal but so are many others. GSM is Tory - we disagree but respect each other I hope. I look back in one nation tories like Hesletine and Clarke in comparison with truss, Cameron and Sunak and despair.
Starmer is a mature experienced individual who I believe has integrity. I just don’t see that in Sunak
