The problem I'm finding with the discussions above is that its an all out scaremongering of Labour and immigrants, without actually discussing Labour Policy.

Or, just as importantly, actually revealing what Conservative polices will be

And the asylum situation has worsened over several months

Guardian quote - which has worsened due to the government’s recent legislation which does not allow asylum seekers to be processed while it waits to start deportations to Rwanda

Yes, sat on hands until they calculated the only way out since Rwanda is not a viable or affordable solution was to call and election and let the problem worsen for the Labour Party to take over.

In regard to returning migrants if they fail to get asylum, Labour is clear it will deport migrants to safe countries of origin. But you can't land a plane without agreements with that country

(Sunak tried to ridicule this policy in the debate last night when he talked about "sit down with the ayatollahs" but Labour said
"Of course there will be countries, Afghanistan for example, where you can’t return people – people who perhaps helped us by interpreting for our troops in Afghanistan and put themselves at risk")

(Rwanda agreed to take 52.000 migrants at any time and the numbers just dont add up, never mind the expense of the process)

Just think about it.

LizzieDrip Thu 27-Jun-24 20:03:49

GSM why is a woman alone in a house any more at risk from asylum seekers than she is from anyone else? Do you have evidence to prove that these people are a danger and a threat to anyone.

Channel 4 News tonight. Reform, Andrew Parker, shows this outfit in its true colours. His solution ? "shoot them". To a paramedic "don't give them oxygen if you have them in the ambulance". And still people don't see that they are just Nazis in plain sight.

I didn't mean literally (with open arms) but there are migrants waiting until next week before launching their boats so they must have some idea of what to expect. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see, then resume this discussion in six months when we can see where the land lies.

There might well be migrants waiting to see the lay of the land, so to speak, but I'm sure the criminal thugs who operate the trafficking system will not be sitting on a rocky outcrop twiddling their thumbs waiting for our election results... they'll carry on capturing as many as they can to stuff into their boats because it's a very lucrative business, regardless.

Which is why Starmer intends to target them by recruiting hundreds of new officers and applying counterterrorism methods.

Whether it's successful, or noticeably effective, remains to be seen. Starmer may be a lot of things but stupid he is not - he knows full well that stopping-the-boats is a priority with a huge swathe of the electorate, so will not be welcoming them with open arms either figuratively speaking or literally.

BTW, there are frequently migrants waiting around for a launch. They are instructed by the traffickers to wait close-by. It's not the migrants who launch the boats, it's the trafficking thugs. They get as many as they can on stand-by and stuff them in until there's no more room, and the migrants who didn't manage to get in one boat, will hang around waiting for the next one.

Jane 43 I was interested to read the link from a chambers about the Cab Rank Rule , which I am quoting here in case some posters missed it.
A Barrister must take instruction regardless of :
the identity of the client
the nature of the case
whether the client is paying privately or is publicly funded
any belief or opinion you may have formed as to the character, reputation, cause, conduct, guilt or innocence of the client.
I'm surprised this wasn't put forward before by one of our legal eagles.

the legal experts only quote what backs up their own opinions.

Currently watching it on catchup. It’s horrible isn’t it. I think everyone needs to watch it.

Apart from anything, he is asking people who work in our organisations, to become casual murderers. Asking law enforcers to shoot people, or paramedics to allow migrants to die by withholding treatment?

They should never be put in this position by politicians.

If Parker believes this is the answer - then let him carry out the dirty work himself, not make demands on others to do it for him. The man is a disgrace.

Can you imagine how this affects our standing on the world-stage? It's utter madness.

Dickens Thu 27-Jun-24 20:25:15

Oh, Parker has 'apologised' - to Nigel Farage.

At no time before I was sent out to canvass did I discuss my personal views with any representative of the Reform Party or Nigel Farage.

'I would therefore like to apologise profusely to Nigel Farage and the Reform Party if my personal views have reflected badly on them and brought them into disrepute as this was not my intention.

To use the kind of language this idiot seems comfortable with, I'd say he's a bit of a nutter.

No wonder Farage is distancing himself from him!

That’s bad MayBee70.
Our local candidates’ leaflets don’t slag off the other parties, just claim that only they have a plan.
But all the leaflets are full of claims that I bet won’t happen.
Here’s an assortment.
“Will make personal care free for old people”
“Will provide 8K more doctors”
“Will stop the boats”
“Will build more affordable houses specifically for locals.”
“Will sort out the state of the roads”
“Will reduce National insurance”

Plus the fact that their parents were taxi drivers, or nurses, or bus drivers, or plumbers, or social workers (all working class or so they say).

Greyisnotmycolour Thu 27-Jun-24 20:31:15

The Nazis rounded up those they objected to and shot them. It was the gas chambers for others or the concentration camps. Nearly everyone on this site is old enough to know this and I am dismayed that they cannot see the parallels with the current hysteria around immigration.

Greyisnotmycolour Thu 27-Jun-24 20:37:51

And before anyone reminds that they did this to their own citizens, I know that.

Iam64 Thu 27-Jun-24 20:43:48

Catching up and dispirited by the insistence by some that asylum seekers are mainly young men from countries where women are abused, thus those men pose a threat to women.
Also, by the nonsense thst the Rwanda plan has any hope of helping us process people seeking asylum

Our local refugee centre mirrors the national picture. The asylum seekers come from Afghanistan, Syria and Iran. Turkey is the single biggest host country for refugees, who mainly come from the Middle East. In the uk, Liverpool is the city with most asylum seekers.

Our colonial history along with other historical/war links means we have links for many seeking sanctuary. Afghanistan is the most obvious example of recent history leaving us with moral and ethical even legal obligations. If the homeland is unsafe, refugees can’t be returned.

It’s a worsening problem with wars and climate change. We can’t just pull up the drawbridge, or shoot people as the Reform candidate suggested. International problems need international solutions.

MayBee70 Well, a friend of mine runs a support group for local asylum seekers. They help out in the local community. Would probably be working if they were processed quicker. If it was closer to me and my health was bit better I’d be helping her.

That is great in an area where help is needed in the local community. There are some very run down areas which would benefit greatly from volunteers. However, the area where the centre is located is very rural with a low population, so I doubt the area requires help from asylum seekers.

That's nonsense. I really do know the area well. I've lived here for 40 years. I can think of all sorts of ways that asylum seekers could help the local population. Some of the local population even volunteer to help the asylum seekers, many of whom have said they would be very willing to do some kind of work.

You may know it, as do thousands of tourists, but you don’t live there do you?

growstuff Thu 27-Jun-24 21:32:46

I'm sure you are aware that before the site was ear-marked for asylum seekers, the MoJ was actively seeking planning permission to build a new prison for 3400 male inmates on the site. There's a three year agreement for asylum seekers, but it's still possible it will be developed as a prison. If not, it will be developed for housing, as will many other enclaves nearby.

What have tourists got to do with it? Wethersfield isn't that touristy (unlike Finchingfield).

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 27-Jun-24 21:34:45

I am fully aware of that.

Wyllow3 Thu 27-Jun-24 21:55:14

Thank you for that leaflet picture.

Conservatives at their negative worst.

Notice it doesnt actually say what the Conservative will actually do, it attempts to just pull down others.

Typical of the negative campaigning and very damaging, the politics of despair

"vote for us as the others are worse but we'll offer you no hope either."
