What is it that attracts racists, Islamaphobes, homophobes and general bigots to Nigel Farage?

I’ve pinched this question from James O’Brian. And to me it is obvious, - they are fascists - talking about replacing the police with paramilitaries and bringing back the death penalty as well as shoot f….g immigrants has huge echoes of 1930s Germany.

So why would you vote for him?

Wyllow3 Wed 03-Jul-24 11:46:21

(I remain convinced that the early election had a great deal to do with the huge build up of unprocessed immigrants, and it being clear that Rwanda was not going to be "the solution".

They had been saying the first deportations to Rwanda would be July)

We have thousands coming in aided by people smugglers, why aren't they coming legally like the ones you mention. I have no objection to passports and working in other countries

Prior to Brexit we could return people to France but because we’re no longer part of the Dublin agreement we can’t. Yet another Brexit benefit sad

Wyllow asylum seekers cannot do voluntary work because they need to be cleared as safe to be around other people. They would need a DBS check which would be impossible to achieve because many do not have documentation, or they come from countries that would not cooperate with the UK anyway. Are the Taliban going to give a reference for an Afghanistani or Iran for an Iranian? How would we know they were safe? It’s not so long since an Afghanistani threw acid in a young woman’s face. Whilst most won’t do this, how do we know who might or might not? That’s why they’re not allowed to do voluntary work.

I’ll just pop this little nugget in.

Chelmsford Reform candidate.

Describes an autistic person with learning difficulties as a vegetable.

He is still standing.

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 11:53:39

Asylum seekers were coming in lorries long before Brexit.
How many did we ever return to France?

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 11:56:17

There are not many Reform voters on here, or even in the country Whitewave. People who have decided to vote Reform will do so whatever (not me, but I think I’ve finally made up my mind.)

One person does a terrible thing. Why would you assume all the others from this country ( or countries since you lump Afghanistan and Iran together) would behave in this way?

A white British male once cheated me out of money. Do I assume all white British males are liars and cheats?

There's a difference between official Volunteer Work and volunteering.

"What are asylum seekers allowed to do?

Asylum seekers can volunteer whilst their claim is considered without being granted permission to work. It is Home Office policy to support asylum seekers volunteering for charities or public sector organisations."

Gov.UK website.

There is a distinction made between "Voluntary Work" and "volunteering". Clearly not when DBS check required.

iirc, schemes discussed as viable on GN include clearing waste dumps and highly littered areas

What a horrible post. If you read it again you will see that I did not say all asylum seekers would commit crimes, I actually said that in order to do voluntary work, everyone has to have a DBS check in order to ascertain that they have no convictions. I was a teacher. I couldn’t have worked in schools without a current DBS. You have deliberately misconstrued what I said.

Whilst most won’t do this, how do we know who might or might not

The above is what I actually said!
I gave one example. Here’s another, seven Syrian asylum seekers attacked a young woman in a public park and assaulted her last week. This happened in Germany.
I repeat, without adequate checks no one can possibly know whether an asylum seeker will engage in criminal activities or not. That’s why, in the UK, we have a DBS system so that volunteers and workers with vulnerable people are thoroughly checked. You appear to think that asylum seekers should not have to undergo these checks, because as we all know, it would be impossible to do a thorough check on many of them.

Wyllow3 Wed 03-Jul-24 13:27:37

No none would condone that attack, but to suggest its common because they were migrants is to tar too many with the same brush.

We need to look at it in terms of what happens everywhere:

'A woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK . Domestic abuse makes up 18 per cent of all recorded crime in England and Wales . In the year ending March 2022, there were 194,683 sexual offences, of which 70,330 were rape .

(police stats)

also google "women attacked groups of men UK".
(no migrants on front page)

But yes, we have to get on and process people - there's a backlog, and we cant deport people until its done.

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 13:28:47

Wyllow can you quote where I said it is common please?

Iam64 Wed 03-Jul-24 13:38:01

Our refugee centre has volunteers from the asylum seeking community as well as from local people. They run sewing groups, men in sheds, toddler and groups for older children. They have people waiting 4 years to be processed.

There will be some people whose history causes concer but there’s a lot of fear mongering

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 13:44:50

I think that’s nice Iam, but it sounds more like a refugee centre that provides interesting groups, hobby groups, that will give people a chance to mix with others and possibly learn something ie how to sew/woodwork etc.
However volunteering in the sense that a person is working in the community is impossible because of the requirement for DBS checks.

I got that impression from examples you give: its true, I apologise, you did not say it was common.

Iam64 Wed 03-Jul-24 13:52:05

But is it maddyone, some of these asylum seekers have been living in our town 4 years waiting to be processed, their children go to local schools, the Christians local churches, the Muslims local mosques. Theyre very well known by other volunteers.

I went recently to donate my sewing machine. The manager is of African heritage and finally got settled status 4 years ago when he applied for the post. The admin support is a white British woman in her mid 70’s who was a teacher in the area. We recognised each other from voluntary work we’d been involved in 45years ago. I’m sure she’d be well able to give asylum seekers she’s known for long periods, a reference to volunteer - just wish they were allowed to work

if you are volunteering you only need a DBS check if you do one to one work with a vulnerable person . I volunteer for all sort of things but only require a DBS for some of them. if you are volunteering within a group you do not need a DBS

Why do most thread always end up being so confrontational and personal?

growstuff Wed 03-Jul-24 14:00:35

maddyone People have to have DBS checks for certain jobs, but an employer can decide to employ people without one.

Wyllow3 Wed 03-Jul-24 14:05:00

Similar here, Iam, can't give refs without disclosing my location. You need refugee status.

But there is a backlog of unprocessed people who can't claim any status at all, this needs dealing with.

As I said above, the Illegal Immigration Act July 2023 states that these people will be indefinitely detained and eventually removed from the UK to a third country such as Rwanda - but this goes against our membership of the ECHR which has clear guidelines on peoples right to seek refugee status.

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 14:21:32

Thank you Wyllow flowers

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 14:27:46

Well if refugees could work, then they should be able to, rather than sitting around in hotels all the time. They must be bored rigid. I see them sometimes if we go to walk on the seafront and they’re sitting in the lounge in the hotel watching the world go by. Or sometimes on the seafront, having a walk, like us.
I just feel that certain areas of work or volunteering are not possible for them to work in because of the requirement to have a DBS.
I think Iam’s refugee centre sounds nice, but it’s not work as far as I understand it. It would be good for them to learn skills that may help in finding a job in the future.

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 14:33:13

Iam we donated my mum’s Singer sewing machine (not electric) and lots of dad’s tools to a charity that renovated them and then they were sent to Africa, for people who need them. We did this after dad died and mum moved to be near us. We had to clear a lot of things from the house and garden as she was moving to a small flat. The sewing machines are particularly useful for ladies who live out in the sticks away from any source of electricity.
I felt they had gone to a good cause.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 03-Jul-24 15:48:53

Just to calm us all down, Gordon Brown has written an excellent piece in today’s Journal section of the Guardian. I’ll see if I can find a link, but if not, it’s free on line anyway.

WWM - the Chelmsford Reform candidate description of people with ASD as ""vegetables "??
Just when you think that Reform have scraped the bottom of the barrel....

zakouma66 Wed 03-Jul-24 16:25:57

My post was not at all " horrible"

What is horrible is lumping people from Iran and Afghanistan and a person who threw acid at a woman together.
The only possible connection is race.
