Of course there are some jobs that can only be done by people who have been checked out, but there are many that don't involve vulnerable people - probably most jobs in fact. These could be done by refugees, many of whom will bring skills with them that would benefit society.

If Farage won't sack him then maybe his employers, who have a very clear policy on ED&I, will consider whether they should be employing him. I have written to them.

Of course, DBS checks are only useful if someone has already committed a crime; not all those who might have wrong intentions to towards children and vulnerable people have a criminal record.

maddie, I know you are not racist, but using the example of people throwing acid or attacking people as good reason for not allowing immigrants to work because they can't be checked does seem as though you are lumping them together.

Many jobs don't insist on DBS or other checks, and nobody bats an eyelid. It's only when roles involve working with the vulnerable (or people in vulnerable positions) that checks are necessary, and in those cases I'm sure most would agree that immigrants shouldn't be able to do them until they are established enough to get references in this country.

The current situation is that they are not allowed to work. This means that they are classed as 'on benefits' although these are more like pocket money than benefits to which UK citizens are entitled, whether or not they have paid into the system.

Refugees are also blamed for living rent-free, but this is because they are not allowed to earn money to pay rent. When I suggested that they should be allowed to do so upthread I was castigated for not insisting that they should work free. They (and anyone who supports them) can't win.

Andy Bell for Channel 5 called Farage out on it yesterday asking more or less the same question that WWM2 posted at the top. He just shrugs it off, says they have 600 candidates standing (do they?), snap election, no time to vet, blamed the vetting company. But that still doesn't answer the question why Farage is a magnet for these people - except we all know what the answer is.

Latest on Farage is his association with convicted fraudster George Cottrell who has been accompanying him on the campaign trail.

I have a feeling this may be where poster boy and major donor Zia Yusuf of the weekend speech in Birmingham fits into the picture. I wondered how Yusuf and Farage connected. The latter claims they have know one another for several years. Is it through Yusuf's business which provided concierge services for the richest people in the world? Cottrell sounds the type who would use that kind of thing.

I'm sure you're aware that there are different levels of DBS checks anyway. It's up the employer whether somebody with a record should be employed. For the lowest level of DBS, some crimes are "spent" after a number of years. Sorry, I'm a bit busy at the moment or I'd look up the actual details and "small print".

I used a the example of a terrible crime, not because I think all immigrants are likely to commit such a crime, but because it was an example of why volunteers need to be vetted. I was then told that the example was only one, to which I gave another. All volunteers, not just asylum seekers, need to be vetted. I worked in a school before I retired, which had an intake of children from many countries and cultures, and of course, many white children. We had staff from all cultures who spoke many languages and who helped us with the children who needed that additional support whilst learning English. Of course all staff were ‘official’ but we also had asylum seeker families. We had many volunteers too, but they all had to have a DBS before they could help. We couldn’t have allowed any volunteer, whatever their skin colour or culture, to work in the classrooms without the necessary document.
If volunteers are to work in a role without the DBS, then clearly they can’t work with children or vulnerable people. This is my point. The DBS is a necessity whatever colour, faith, or culture a person is. I’m white, British born. I had to have a DBS, renewed three yearly. After the Soham murders, the range of people required to have a DBS was widened. Note I chose an example of a white criminal on this occasion, because it is relevant. It’s relevant because it was that case caused the need for DBS to be widened.
