French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

All I can say is, I am glad I am on my way out & not on my in, dread to think what this country is going to be like in 10/20 years time. Think of the legacy you are leaving for your grandchildren

My sentiments exactly

Proposing something and doing it are two different things, and even so it will take time. Meanwhile, people are still banging on about how we 'need' more people. I'd say 67 million is quite enough people, how can we need more?

Firstly, the country needs HE students' money. Secondly, we have an ageing population who rely on others for personal care. Even if they were paid more, I'm not sure I'd want to be cared for by people who were otherwise unemployable and only doing the job for the money. Thirdly, we need people with higher level skills which aren't available in the UK.

How can anybody say how many people are "enough"? It's not as though the country is actually sinking with the weight of all the humans on it.

I'm afraid the country is actually sinking with the weight of 68 million people. Haven't you noticed the shortage of housing, hospitals, schools, prisons, even clean water. The sewage of 68 million people is being dumped in our rivers and seas. London alone has 8.9 million people while New Zealand has 5.2 million people in the whole country.

UK density 725 people per square mile
New Zealand density 51 people per square mile

This country is definitely overcrowded, and that is where many of our problems lie.

It makes me weep to think of what my children will have to face in their old age, and what my lovely grandchildren will have to endure in 30 or 40 years time. You can see where this country is heading just by watching the news reports.

Hey!, someone with some sense

Wyllow3 Thu 18-Jul-24 00:31:40

Their world will be very different, we cannot really know, how things will be in 40 years: not how we have known it.
Interesting thread on this in past GN

Let's send everybody to Rwanda - population density 584 per sq km - that's double the density of the UK. How about Singapore with a population density of 8276 per sq km?

Funnily enough, some other countries seem to manage much higher population density than the UK.

Where's it heading? I bet you didn't know where the country was heading 40 years ago.

Professor Matt Goodwin has written an article about how mass immigration is having a devastating effect on our country. Chestnut is absolutely right.

BevSec Thu 18-Jul-24 07:21:49

He is author of Values, Voice and Virtues, the New British Politics.

BevSec Thu 18-Jul-24 07:26:39

He sats the only migrants we should welcome are those with skills and something to offer this country, not those who will be a drain on our resources.

The majority of immigrants do have skills and something they can offer the country. What's the big fuss about?

PS. Just because Matt Goodwin says something doesn't mean it's right.

Take your blinkers off growstuff and see this country and what’s happening with too many migrants both legal and illegal as it really is.
Only taking legal migrants for the reason of their skills, a point based system is the only way to go.

There are over a hundred agencies able to grant visas appointed by the government, a huge mistake as at least one has come to light for massive corruption recently in the social care sector, who knows how many others are similar?
Visas should only be granted by the Home Office to anyone, but we all know how useless that dept is and has been for a very long time.

Casdon Thu 18-Jul-24 08:00:35

If some have blinkers, others have blindfolds. There are no easy answers to resolving a worldwide issue like this. People need to stop listening to the pedlars who claim to have all the answers.

Oreo Thu 18-Jul-24 08:04:46

Of course there are no easy answers to illegal migrants but there certainly is for the legal ones.
This government needs to do much much better than the last one in curbing it.

BevSec Thu 18-Jul-24 08:09:14

Growstuff, how can you possibly know what skills illegal immigrants have?

I agree. Upskilling our own workforce has to be the priority to reduce legal migration.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 18-Jul-24 08:21:40

Nobody can possibly know what skills those coming here on boats have. We don’t need them. They are unlikely ever to be anything but a drain on our resources and a source of trouble.

Another poor soul drowned in the channel overnight, with 60+ rescued.

RIP 💐

Luckygirl3 Thu 18-Jul-24 08:39:01

It is a major challenge for any government. But at least we can be more certain that the new government will approach the problem with some integrity rather than treating people as unwanted parcels to be shipped off to countries with unstable regimes and wasting many millions of pounds on this. It was a national disgrace.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 18-Jul-24 08:49:45

Blenheim Palace

The Prime Minister will begin the process of tackling the European wide migrant issue with leaders from Europe.

A European wide level of cooperation makes a deal of sense as well as using the various law enforcement agencies to rid ourselves of the gang who prey on these unfortunate migrants.

It will be good to see an ending to the hyperbole surrounding the issue, which does nothing to assist.

Iam64 Thu 18-Jul-24 08:50:51

Thanks Luckygirl, there are no simple solutions to the complex problems behind the growth in people seeking asylum. No speedy solutions either. The Rwanda scheme was illegal, immoral and ludicrously wasteful of tax payers money.

I don’t expect the problem to be improved quickly. I hope for co-operation between European countries that share the burden of trying to decide who should get sanctuary and who can be deported to their country of origin

The irony of the reverse empire invasion is rarely acknowledged, if it ever is by those who lack compassion or understanding towards asylum seekers. Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and the UK are all places people escaping wars/famine/etc aim for. The share languages with their former colonial ‘masters’

I definitely knew which way it was heading 30 years ago and was spot on. Now every time I look at the news someone has been stabbed, body parts in suitcases etc.

Those boats are full of very young men so it is highly unlikely they will have gained skills that our country wants.
Even if they are qualified in anything they destroy all their documentation so they can’t prove anything. I wouldn’t, for example, employ anyone who said they were a qualified electrician as it could have fatal consequences.
