Breaking news.
3 shots.
He's apparently fine.

I am truly shocked, (but not surprised) that there are GN members disappointed that POTUS Trump was not assassinated…

AGAA4 Sun 14-Jul-24 12:10:47

Since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln there have been other presidents and statesmen killed in the US. It saddens me to know that people have not moved on from thinking that killing someone you oppose is the only way.

I remember when Jo Brand asked “why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?”.

When David Aaronovitch said “if I was Biden I'd hurry up and have Trump murdered”.

Liberal intolerance is clear for all to see. (Nigel Farage today)

The same can be seen on here it seems to me. The hateful left.

Please stop associating everyone who does not support Trump as "The hateful left".

We are not all 'left', some are right-wing, some centre ground, which I am.

I believe he's a dangerous man who will undoubtedly win the presidency, and embark on a programme of revenge against those who have attempted his down fall. He will, and has already, divide the nation. Some of his supporters are extremists - with guns. I think there will be a simmering civil war in America.

In spite of this, I am still glad that he was not killed - no politician should be in fear of being murdered, nor lose their life to some unstable lawless individual with a gun. Regardless.

I regret the shooter could not have been incapacitated not shot dead, although clearly he had to be if he was still a risk.

No chance to question him or his motives, which matters a great deal, because whats happening now is that Trump supporters all over S/M blaming a democrat plot.

Yet often in these cases a lone person with seriously disturbed mind.

Slightly more info on whether he was Republican

"He was registered to vote as a Republican, according to listings in Pennsylvania’s voter database that matched his name, age, and address linked to his public records, CNN reported"

With you 100% there! It really makes me ill, though I am not surprised, either, given a lot of the aggression towards anyone who doesn’t agree with their views.

The weapon was a rifle with telescopic sights.
What struck me about Trump following the assassination attempt was that he was virtually fighting off the attempts of his security police to get him into the van, so determined was he to appear triumphant and death defying. oblivious to the fact that they were creating a human shield and could easily be shot themselves.
Hitler survived several assassination attempts.

Why was he asking for his shoes? Does he take them off when he’s speaking at rallies? He gave no thought that others may have been hurt or may be hurt.

Probably the most daft comment on here!

In that situation you are shocked and stunned. Victims don’t know what they’re talking about. It was literally minutes since he had been almost killed. Dazed and confused.

It certainly wasn’t staged. The SS were informed by the public that there was a gunman in plain view, funny they let him shoot, before they took him out- something sounds fishy to me🤔

There are certainly people claiming they saw the gunman on the roof a couple of minutes before the shooting and tried to alert the security services by pointing and shouting. The authorities will investigate these claims but really, was there any time for the security people to check out the information and react? I very much doubt it.

In any case I’d have thought anyone seeing a gunman on the roof would have assumed it was a police sniper like the one who shot the gunman.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 12:21:46

I agree Primrose that anyone who has just been shot, albeit though the ear so not seriously, would not be thinking coherently.

Inevitably.

Even if it was - there will be little recognition of the fact that probably the majority of democrats would not approve of it.

Biden was most gracious in his remarks about Trump and the incident.

I'm not surprised either. When I'd just joined GN there were members on here who wanted Boris dead from covid.

Biden was most gracious in his remarks about Trump and the incident.

Well, apart from the fact that he said political violence is unheard of in the US. 🤔

I would imagine the adrenaline would be surging too, hence the fist bump.

Mt61 Sun 14-Jul-24 12:29:32

Sorry, to make it clear, what I’m saying is that there is no way this was set up by Trump or his team. Do people seriously think he stood there and said shoot at me - but just graze me?? An inch to the right and he would be dead. And before anyone says that would be a good thing, just be aware that would make you a perpetrator of hate speech, you know the kind of stuff people love to accuse Trump of.

Urmstongran Sun 14-Jul-24 12:29:51

The shooter gave Biden & democrats monetary support apparently.

Galaxy Sun 14-Jul-24 12:33:04

What I mean when I say not of the left is that to me they are unrecognisable as the left, they hate the working class for one, they may call themselves left but their values arent really left, they are deeply authoritarian, love censorship and are mostly middle class. I will see if I can think of any more generalisations grin

Urmstongran Sun 14-Jul-24 12:37:54

The image of Trump, bloodied, but fist raised in defiance with the American flag behind him is iconic. Love or loathe him the actions of the shooter will have the exact opposite effect to that intended…

Millie22 Sun 14-Jul-24 12:38:06

And here's me thinking that the conversation about Angela Rayner's trouser suit went a bit too far!

Who in their right mind wishes another person is killed because they don't like them.

A new low imo.

Grammaretto Sun 14-Jul-24 12:41:17

Lots of stuff appearing in the press. The blame game is actively being played.
I agree with you Dickens
It was a horrible, frightening incident that ended tragically.

I abhor violence as a means of solving problems.

I am still very worried that Trump could win again. When he separated mothers from their babies at the Mexican border, he showed a total lack of compassion so that was a last straw as far as I'm concerned.

I know what you mean Galaxy.
I consider myself centre right, because I hold some more right wing views and some more left wing views. I’m not extreme, but I think from comments directed at me from time to time that some posters see me as right of the Reform party. I’m really not.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 12:46:32

I know Urms and that’s an example of what I was referring to upthread.

Why is it daft? He was heard to say it and I’m curious to know why he was searching for his shoes and asking his security men to find them. If he was dazed and confused he was still capable of fist pumping and shouting to the crowd? When something similar happened when he was in a debate with Hillary Clinton he legged it off the stage as quickly as possible whereas Hillary’s first concern was that no one hade been hurt.

Secret Service now being blamed for lack of preparation. Trumps supporters en masse on S/M blaming democrats (forgetting the Capitol invasion!).

I'd like to know as far as possible the motivations of the young man with the sniper rifle before conclusions are leapt to.

A witness saw a man crawling up the roof with a rifle and said he and others tried to alert the police several minutes before the attack.
Were the police slow to take action?

The witness who was interviewed claims he and others tried to alert the police to the sniper about six or seven minutes before he took aim.
Whether that is true or not I don't know.
Perhaps it just felt longer than it was as they must have all been feeling anxious.
