Breaking news.
3 shots.
He's apparently fine.

Starmer’s words are a bit of a joke. His Foreign Secretary has previously said that Trump is a neo-Nazi and it’s that sort of talk that leads to lunatics doing things like this.

Mind you, I think Lammy will be out of the door at the first cabinet reshuffle.

The shooter gave Biden & democrats monetary support apparently.

The full CNN report includes

"However, federal campaign finance reports show that he had made a 15 dollar contribution to a Democratic-aligned political action committee called Progressive Turnout Project on 20 January 2021, the report added". (more CNN)

Not sure a 15 dollar contribution 3 years ago to Progressive Turnout Project when he was also registered as a Republican voter adds much to the picture of this violent young man.

I hope time does give us some insight into the motivations.

Please, BBC (et al.), we talk of gunmen, not shooters.

Oreo Sun 14-Jul-24 13:12:31

There’s really only two interpretations of the young gunman’s motives, either some kind of mental health problem or somebody who really hates DT. Possibly both!

Namsnanny Sun 14-Jul-24 13:12:52

Mt61

It certainly wasn’t staged. The SS were informed by the public that there was a gunman in plain view, funny they let him shoot, before they took him out- something sounds fishy to me🤔

Oh hear we go....

Oreo Sun 14-Jul-24 13:13:41

Either way he’s now produced a situation where DT is bound to win the election.

Oreo Sun 14-Jul-24 13:14:48

Look, maybe a few in the crowd did see the gunman and maybe they didn’t either.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 13:15:00

Time will definitely give us an insight into what made the young man tick. For us it is unthinkable, but sadly politicians of all colours are verbally attacked and threatened in the UK these days. I believe there were people protesting right outside Starmer’s house during the election campaign, which I find both incomprehensible and disgusting. He has children for goodness sake. And of course two politicians murdered in their constituencies in recent years.

I hope you’re wrong, butI fear you’re right.

Urmstongran Sun 14-Jul-24 13:19:36

I think ‘shooter’ is more appropriate when describing a rifle with telescopic sights.

Nandalot Sun 14-Jul-24 13:24:00

Looking at the aerial view of the incident. I cannot understand why there was only one security marksman on one of the flat roofs. There were four flat roofs, (shooter on one). This could have been avoided.

Alie2Oxon Sun 14-Jul-24 13:31:05

Some one was saying "This doesn't happen in America!"
Has everyone forgotten Kennedy?

What a foolish, stupid thing to do.

Dead, trump would be a martyr.

Alive, he's going to be an even angrier and worse president ...

Urmstongran Sun 14-Jul-24 13:31:43

Nicholas Irving, a former US special operations sniper dubbed the “Reaper,” offered a more blunt assessment of the secret services’ performance.

“A guy w/ a rifle got within 152+ yards from a presidential nominee, unseen, and got shots off...We provided better diplomatic security when I was w/ [private security firm] Triple Canopy as a contractor. Who TF is in charge of the Secret Service?...No [eyes] on a firing position that close? Sketch,” he wrote on X.

I think there’s going to be a whole raft of investigation now.
My thoughts are with bystanders killed or critically injured. This whole news story is just so shocking.

On guns in the USA - glad to see

" It is to declare, once and for all, that we will finally stop pledging our allegiance to guns more than to one another"

Hear = here

Urmstongran Sun 14-Jul-24 13:38:25

Of course they will never find out if any one else was involved, dead men tell no tales. Just like Kennedy's assassination.

You would think, the SS would have some drones buzzing over the place to spot shooters on rooftops. It's not rocket science.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 13:43:42

I’ve just heard a clip of Biden saying that political violence like this is ‘unheard of’ in America.
Has he forgotten Kennedy? Two Kennedys actually, John and Robert.
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865.
Four American Presidents have been assassinated. There have also been many attempts at assassination of Presidents that were unsuccessful.

Good point.

The poor man says a lot of odd things these says.

The finger is being pointed at the gunman being a member of ATIFA.
Not sure of the veracity of this statement yet.

NotSpaghetti Sun 14-Jul-24 14:02:58

Yes Dickens I agree about revenge - and then the 2025 "project".

NotSpaghetti Sun 14-Jul-24 14:04:01

There are already conspiracy theories about Biden having arranged it.

Wyllow3 Sun 14-Jul-24 14:04:36

Well, Trump supporters would point finger in that direction, wouldnt they -

And that's why its important to find out if he had acted alone or not - unverified accusations going in any direction!

Mollygo Sun 14-Jul-24 14:09:20

There are already conspiracy theories about Biden having arranged it.

No more likely than to have been Trump who arranged it.
I am astonished at the insufficient security measures though.

dotpocka Sun 14-Jul-24 14:10:34

mlk 2 kennedys
many political figures
all kinds of other people shot or attacked even their spouses

MayBee70 Sun 14-Jul-24 14:12:50

But never has there been a divisiveness in America the way that Trump has polarised voters.
