There's a clutch of headlines which hopefully indicate Biden my at last be re considering.

D Telegraph
"Biden’s supporters plot to fast-track nomination
Push to use ‘virtual’ vote to confirm president’s candidacy comes as he mistakes gender of his Secret Service chief"

Guardian "Joe Biden says he'd step down as presidential candidate if a 'medical condition emerged"

CNN "President Joe Biden is reportedly mulling a decision to step aside from the 2024 presidential race as a new poll has deepened a dilemma involving Vice President Kamala Harris.

On Wednesday evening, CNN's Jeff Zeleny reported that a senior Democratic adviser has said that the president, who was diagnosed with COVID earlier in the day, has become "more receptive" to calls for him to step down."

Hoping, as the USA needs a president who will actually engage with the world and the many more moderate voices in the USA.

He now says he won’t stand down. I am sadly beginning to think that there is something wrong with him that is affecting his ability to make rational decisions.

NotSpaghetti Fri 19-Jul-24 18:40:00

I just heard that MayBee70 why does he keep saying it?

maddyone Fri 19-Jul-24 18:44:01

I think he’ll go now.
Covid has given him a reason.

I read that as well. And I've just read that the Biden family are making arrangements for him to stand down.

We'll just have to wait and see.

There’s been something wrong with him for some years.
Remember all the hair sniffing incidents and other allegations?

There's always "allegations" doesn't mean any of it was true. However, I think many of us posted that Biden's age was an issue and were accused of ageism. Sadly I think we've been proved correct as Biden's abilities have declined, hardly surprising as the work load of being POTUS is punishing. I just hope he stands down and the Democrats have a candidate who beats Trump as IMO he's a dangerous narcissist.

Some of you may well recall I advocated for his replacement a couple of years ago. I was vilified at the time. “Oh he’s just got a stammer. Be kind”.
Yeah right.

maddyone Sat 20-Jul-24 08:31:20

I also said he was too old ages ago and was told no, nothing wrong at all, and that his age wasn’t an issue.

Re Kamala Harris (from a recent poll and this was reported on a BBC website from their USA reporter)

“ Ms Harris' public approval rating sat at 28%, making her one of the least popular vice-presidents in modern history - lower than Iraq War architect Dick Cheney, who was reviled by Democrats.”

Not popular enough by a long chalk to stand against Trump.

Casdon Sat 20-Jul-24 08:40:14

People are using poetic licence here. I can remember the previous discussions about Biden, about his abilities as president during the current term. In my opinion both Biden and Trump are now too old, and have declining faculties, so neither should be able to stand again.

nanna8 Sat 20-Jul-24 09:01:26

Biden has just said again that he will not stand down.

Luckygirl3 Sat 20-Jul-24 09:16:59

Sigh.

I am not familiar with the process for the Democrats choosing a leader, but surely they can just tell him they don't want him, but would prefer someone who stands a cat in hell's chance of getting rid of the prospect of another Trump presidency.

Looking at it all from this side of the pond, it seems beyond credence that in the whole of the USA these two are the best they can come up with to lead their country.

Mind you, I have no doubt they were equally incredulous when somehow we finished up with Johnson!

David49 Sat 20-Jul-24 09:42:27

Old Joe is really struggling now and it’s only going to get worse, some democrats are now saying he’ll be gone by Monday - we will see.

There is no real serious indication who will replace him, it’s highly unlikely to be Harris, whoever it is will have a real problem defeating Trump now.

True about many allegations being untrue ,*Vintagew

Far too hasty there with the post button

There's evidence of Biden doing and saying many odd things. The press will always print Trump's comments but Biden gets away with it.

His comments at a dance competition. The girls were about 14 and he was very inappropriate. Telling the girls he'd be back in 4 years time. Very strange . Hair sniffing is also available on YouTube .

They are both unsavoury and far too old.

But I'd not worry if Trump did win. It's really not such a catastrophe. However we seem to enjoy getting in a tizz so carry on regardless

The Democratic convention is August 19th to August 22nd, I believe thats when the candidate is accepted, but I don't understand what it involves replacing Biden before or after that date.

lemsip Sat 20-Jul-24 10:05:32

Biden should go!... he is so much below par and can't even stride out in a walk to the podium.

LizzieDrip Sat 20-Jul-24 10:08:51

I was listening to the issue being explained by an American political journalist on a podcast recently.

She said the problem facing the Democrats is complex. Even if Biden does step down, finding his replacement is tricky. Apparently the funding for the Democratic campaign is for a ‘Biden / Harris’ ticket. So, Harris would have to be ‘on the ticket’; logically making her the candidate, but she’s unpopular with the electorate.

The journalist said it might just be possible (re. the funding issue) for someone else to run for the top job and leave Harris as VP. However, she said the presidential candidate always chooses their own VP running mate.

Of course, at the moment, it’s all a moot point because Biden is still the Democratic candidate. Phew🤷‍♀️

David49 Sat 20-Jul-24 11:19:11

Many democrat fund raisers are not directly threatening Biden that if he does not stand down they are going to withdraw campaign funding.

David49 Sat 20-Jul-24 11:19:41

now directly

ah, this is what I've been looking for after reading bits and bobs

headlines

I listened to part of Trump’s long acceptance speech thoughI couldn’t last the distance and listen to all of it. With all his support now I think he will get in unless the Democrats come up with someone really good. They are short on time, though. If Biden continues to stand I think I would prefer Trump if I was an American. If Biden gets in again the real people manipulating things behind the scenes are an unknown quantity. Better the devil you know.

nanna IMO this is never a route to follow, even in everyday life, let alone something as important as the election of the POTUS!

No American that voted for Biden wants Trump ! He is an incredibly dangerous man . You might want to read more about Project 2025 . Did you mean Trump when you said the real people behind the scenes ? Biden has a good team and they have accomplished a lot of good things that I as an American value .

So, what did he say other than being nasty about Biden and Pelosi, and rambling on about Hannibal Lecter ( I mean, what on earth was that all about???). It was at Boris Johnson Peppa Pig level.
