What on earth?

From The Telegraph this morning:

“ Violence erupted in Leeds on Thursday evening with rioters setting a double-decker bus on fire and overturning a police car.

Hundreds of locals clashed with officers and pelted police vans with rocks and bricks.

The mass riot is believed to have broken out after social services took away four children from a family in the inner city area of Harehills at around 5pm on Thursday.

Footage shared on social media showed the crowd smashing a police car’s windows with a pram, rocks and bicycles before flipping the vehicle onto its side.

West Yorkshire Police said officers had safely extricated the children and agency workers before the violence escalated throughout the evening.”

Sky News reports local councillors and others trying to douse the flames, very brave.

Do you have photo links Willow3?

Sky News reported,

"Just a few hours on from what West Yorkshire Police described as "pockets of disorder", the scene on the ground felt like much more than that, with dozens of people still gathering when we arrived.

Some in the community were curious, recording what was happening on their phones, while others leapt into action.

Those people included a group of men including Mothin Ali, a local councillor, who led a group trying to douse the bus in water.

Speaking to us afterwards while sweating and clearly exhausted, Mr Ali repeatedly mentioned wider social concerns, including issues like poverty and social exclusion as part of a powder keg that was waiting to blow."

Grannygravy ... I expect most people understand that the Roma community has a reputation of always been very anti authoritarian.

So considering that they live huddled together in Harehills, it's easy to see how situations like this explode.

This reminds me of rioting in Leicester a year or so ago.
Disgraceful.

Totally different, primrose.

The Leicester riots were religion based.

keepingquiet Fri 19-Jul-24 13:34:36

Don't feed the fires.

Rekarie Fri 19-Jul-24 13:36:47

Lots of clips from this event on Tiktok. Some very brave members of the community trying to put out fires and remonstrating with the rioters.

Also some footage of the two men setting the bus alight. Very clear clips which means they're bound to get arrested.

Namsnanny Fri 19-Jul-24 13:37:08

Thank you willow but considering all the footage now available on media, I was hoping to actually see a recording of the people helping.

I realise Mothin Ali said in the interview of him I saw, that some tried to help, but without knowing what help that was it's difficult to attribute bravery to anyone, other than the SS and Police first on the scene who were well aware of the situation they were entering into.

Perhaps check out tin Tok as Rekarie mentions?

The Independent:
Headlines:
"Leeds riots - latest: Harehills violence triggered by ‘family incident’ as hero councillor calmed disorder.

Videos shared from the disturbance also showed a councillor appearing to stop people from throwing more objects onto a fire

Councillor Mothin Ali has told The Independent that local police didn’t have the support needed."

I’ve seen a short video of two of the older children being forcibly removed, with a huge baying crowd and large police presence. Traumatic for the children and very difficult for police and social workers.
It’s possible a Court had heard evidence and decided all the children needed to be safeguarded. I can’t imagine these older children being manhandled by police officers if a legal order wasn’t in place.
The actions of Mr Ali and his supporters were positive. I’m sure Mr Ali is correct in raising poverty and deprivation as a contributor. We’ve always had an anti social, anti authority section in white British society. The images I saw showed white men throwing stones, setting fire to buses, wrecking police cars and rioting. I’m not suggesting it was confined to white British thugs by the way.

Cossy Fri 19-Jul-24 13:49:45

Awful way to show their “support”! Mobs like this contribute to the rest of losing our right to peacefully protest.

Empathy with all bar the “mob”

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-24 13:49:54

Namsnanny, it’s very clear Mr Ali was supported in his attempts to calm the situation by other menbers of the community.

Rekarie Fri 19-Jul-24 13:51:27

The 2 setting fire to the bus weren't white but I don't really believe that's relevant.

The baby had gone to hospital with a head wound and it was decided all children should be removed. Awful experience for everyone concerned.

This caused major upset and locals joined in

I might be totally wrong but I don't think this will happen again tonight

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-24 13:56:32

Thanks Rekarie - I didn’t see all the footage.

I read the baby had an injury which the parents said was caused by one of the older children. I imagine the parents told relatives and neighbours who, as is often the case, believed social workers had it wrong.
Dreadful for everyone, especially the children.

“ One local, who claimed to know the family involved, said the riot had initially begun as a protest against the children being taken away.

“I have heard it was a baby who was injured – by a sibling. But it was just an accident and it happened a while ago.

“The parents took the baby to the hospital for a check-up.

“They could not believe it when the hospital called social services. After all this time, the social workers then took the four children into care.

“They did not give the family a reason. They just said it was for the best.

“Those kids have never been harmed by their parents and that is why people got so angry. It was a protest.”

Well I doubt social workers would go in on a whim. They must have had grave concerns and no matter what the neighbour says, none of us know what goes on behind closed doors.

Exactly - Social Services appear to be doing this a lot nowadays too, I know of several people that have been gaslighted by them and blamed for things that haven't happened .... are they trying to give the authorities reasons for their existence?

Social Services didn't take them away either - they were removed forcibly by the police and bundled into a police van. The trauma those poor kids will have had. I don't condone the violence at all, but I like that the community rallied round, mine certainly wouldn't have done. My neighbours were twitching their curtains when my daughter died and police and ambulance services were here; they watched as the coffin drove past the house, yet not one has ever spoken to me before nor since! Lovely place to live ....

welbeck Fri 19-Jul-24 14:25:06

Namsnanny, if you click on the daily mail link above, you will find the footage of councillor ali in action, bravely confronting rioters and trying to prevent risk of arson to nearby houses with children.
must have been absolutely terrifying for anyone living in that district.
i was surprised to see in early pictures that it seems to have been a double decker bus that was reduced to ash.
imagine how the driver felt when he was trapped in that area; the bus wasn't parked there, it was en route.

icanhandthemback Fri 19-Jul-24 14:36:27

Before the children were taken away there would have been quite a lot of work done with the schools/nurseries/Gp's etc being consulted. My daughter has had a lot of involvement one way or another with Social Services and although they can be odd in the things they advise, if you make the effort, they will not usually take away your children on a whim.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jul-24 14:40:45

I under no circumstances want to love in a community where rallying around looks like that.

Complete disregard for this country’s law & order.. in-fact Starma could use that £84 million building new jails, to house this lot. Absolutely disgusting

Well, Thanks for your affirmation of the situation as you see it, but forgive me for wanting first hand information, as the press will slant things anyway they wish.

Imv, as I'm sure you will appreciate, the only way to be fair or impartial is to try to avoid getting information filtered through a biased source.

tickingbird Fri 19-Jul-24 15:54:32

I watched it unfold live on tv last night and it was absolutely disgraceful. To see this happening on uk streets is truly depressing. The ones not born here should be deported. I’m sick of it.

Casdon Fri 19-Jul-24 16:08:03

Why are people making it sound as though this is a one off incident of rioting, and blaming immigration for it?
There was a very similar in incident in Swansea in 2021 involving a local community, and I’m sure people will remember other incidents. Hot evenings, young men and triggers are a common factor.

Thanks welbeck, I will look out for published videos.

I saw the video of the two men (later on others helped) lighting the bus on fire. The driver and passengers had long gone by that time, so were not in danger.

I heard the crowd shouting how the were going to riot to pay back the gov.

I think the lone woman who confronted the crowd and took a large plastic rubbish bin on wheels away from some men (and seemed to be telling them off in some fashion), was the bravest of all.

They were intent on adding the bin to a street fire but she was stopping them.

BTW, most of the crowd seemed as if they were at a street party. Laughing, dancing, showing off. Plenty of children wandering in and out.

Credit where credit is due, she had more gumption and backbone than any of the crowd, councillor, police put together.

That is a dangerously silly comment to make, MadeInYorkshire

I’m sure we all remember the terrible riots in London some years ago. I know there have been many riots in the UK over the centuries, but many were protests against poverty, a lack of work and eviction from homes and land. Now we seem to have reached the situation seen in parts of the US where, if someone in the community considers (rightly or not) that they have been wronged, others begin to riot and loot by way of ‘support’.
