What on earth?

From The Telegraph this morning:

“ Violence erupted in Leeds on Thursday evening with rioters setting a double-decker bus on fire and overturning a police car.

Hundreds of locals clashed with officers and pelted police vans with rocks and bricks.

The mass riot is believed to have broken out after social services took away four children from a family in the inner city area of Harehills at around 5pm on Thursday.

Footage shared on social media showed the crowd smashing a police car’s windows with a pram, rocks and bicycles before flipping the vehicle onto its side.

West Yorkshire Police said officers had safely extricated the children and agency workers before the violence escalated throughout the evening.”

it's just bonkers

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jul-24 16:20:37

Agreed, eazybee. SS doubtless had to involve the police because of the danger they were facing from the community. MiY calls that ‘the community rallying round’. I call it taking the law into their own hands.

Pay back the government in what respect? For giving them a helping hand?

Mt61 Fri 19-Jul-24 16:27:07

The NHS/SS don’t get involved Willy, nilly, they must have had good reason to investigate the situation

Before the children were taken away there would have been quite a lot of work done with the schools/nurseries/Gp's etc being consulted. My daughter has had a lot of involvement one way or another with Social Services and although they can be odd in the things they advise, if you make the effort, they will not usually take away your children on a whim.

That's not always the case. My friend is a foster carer and she's taken children in who have been removed from their homes due to an incident. She took in one baby and sibling who had been removed just an hour before. No discussions with anyone. Obviously sometimes immediate danger will cause immediate removal.

Images of this situation?

Water cannon the lot of them. A result of soft policing.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 19-Jul-24 16:45:11

MadeinYorkshire, safeguarding children is the remit of social workers working with children and families.
Of course, there have been mistakes made by Social Services, but no one has a list of the numbers of children who are alive and well following SS involvement, who might not be so otherwise. I expect that we can all name children who died at the hands of their parents or caregivers and social workers are on the forefront of blame when this occurs.
Families may not be truthful in why the child/ren are being removed.

JaneJudge Fri 19-Jul-24 16:58:10

They may go home after intervention, no one has any idea as it is all confidential

Where serious incidents happen, yes but when the children have been in situ for such a long time, enquiries are made of schools and other professionals whilst SS assess the situation.

They are on Leeds Live on a video, amongst other sites. It looks a very mixed group.

^Exactly - Social Services appear to be doing this a lot nowadays too, I know of several people that have been gaslighted by them and blamed for things that haven't happened .... are they trying to give the authorities reasons for their existence? ^

That is a dangerously silly comment to make, MadeInYorkshire

Is it, dangerous and silly? Not to the many people that are trying to seek justice for these things ....

I actually know 3 people this has happened to, but hey have ruined the lives of many. Our authorities are corrupt, particularly the NHS 'trusts' (what a misnomer that is) who will lie, and lie in order to save face. Staff are threatened and hounded if they try to whistle-blow over things like patient safety and some have even lost their careers for standing up for their patients. They made my friend disabled, & her notes had huge gaps in them when we went to look. They lied to me - I was left screaming in agony for 8 hours. I was in so much excruciating pain I tried to get off the trolley that was parked next to the nurses station, where they all sat, tapping on computers, ignoring my screams. I got my feet to the floor and the last thing I saw before blacking out & hitting the floor, was the trolley flying up the corridor into the next poor sod lying there. They hadn't put the brakes on. I came to in 'scanning', after which a surgeon came to tell me that my bowel was dying and he's needing to operate very shortly before it perforates and gives me sepsis. I still have flashbacks to that day. When I wrote to complain & ask what had happened, they denied it all, 'There were no recorded falls in the dept that day'. It might not have been recorded, but it did happen - I'm disabled & I cannot get myself up from the floor, and neither can I get onto those high trolleys on my own!

My 'god-sister's' husband lost his life because a dermatology therapy burned him. Ten days later he was very ill and got admitted. He'd got sepsis from those burns which despite having notices about sepsis all over the NHS, they missed it. He actually tried to escape at one point, as he said that they were killing him, and they did. The trust is lying to his wife, 'we can't interview the doctor because she has left our trust', having left it for 17 months before responding to her concerns. Turns out she is no longer even a doctor, so maybe that doctor had her own concerns that she would have been found out? They will try to settle with huge sums of money (in fact many spend more on legal claims than they often do on care!), but she WILL have her day in court.

Historical failings of the North East Ambulance Service who covered up details of the deaths of patients following mistakes by paramedics, That still hasn't been investigated properly, and families are trying to get justice.

Not isolated cases, and there'll be many, many more sadly ... most of the news outlets are only concentrating on the dreadful violence, not about the incident that sparked it.

This isn’t about the NHS or your experiences with it.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jul-24 17:45:37

Yes I had a bad experience in Tesco the other day that seems as relevant. I under no circumstances want the welfare of children placed in the hands of random people. Of course all organisations have failings the answer it to tackle those failings not destroy all organisations.

Iam64 Fri 19-Jul-24 17:58:36

I’m waiting to learn more about the head injury to this baby. Mistakes do happen and we learn about them but rarely about the children whose lives are changed for the better by intervention. I went to the funeral of a foster carer friend recently. She’d foster 250 children. Many long term who attended her funeral. Some were in their 50’s and had maintained contact with ‘mum’ and each other. I heard three talking and agreeing ‘mum and my social worker saved me’.

It’s so easy to criticise the scenes on line with police forcibly removing two older distressed children. They’re a tough watch but we don’t know how long attempts to calm the situation had been going on or what the immediate risk of significant harm may be.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jul-24 18:15:17

I have no idea about who is right in this case. However I will never forget the family on This morning explaining how terrible it was their child had been taken into care and how they fought against the judgement. Obviously social services coulnt comment on the case.
The child was dead within a year, killed by the father.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 19-Jul-24 18:46:12

Galaxy, I remember that case, too. The judge ruled that the social workers were wrong. Tragic events proved them right

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe members here are free to share their thoughts and experiences. Unless of course there is some sort of gate keeping structure at play ?

I'm sorry MIY for your trauma.

Perhaps the point you were trying to make is that things are more complex than they initially seem.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jul-24 20:13:50

People are free to share anything and people are also free to respond in any way they like that doesnt break guidelines.

News reports today indicate the baby had a fractured skull after being dropped on the head. The parents say the injury was caused by one of the older children. Four of them had been left for a period of time whilst their parents were out. The decision to remove the children followed the parents decision to leave the country

The news spread quickly through the Roma community in the area. Spokesperson said they get persecuted at home, all over Europe and now in the UK

Persecuted, so you don't expect any investigation by authorities when a child presents with a skill fracture, possibly caused by a sibling, really. They should just be left alone to carry on, just because they are an ethnic minority. REALLY

Freya5 Sat 20-Jul-24 09:26:00

Sorry should say " they don't expect".

Primrose53 Sat 20-Jul-24 09:56:58

The Roma are a law unto themselves. They have taken over parts of many UK towns where other people dare not go now.

The tent city in central London is Roma people.

They are mostly aggressive, bullying people. My neighbour and her sister and family went out to live inRomania for a couple of years. Their accommodation was a very basic type of hut with a hole in the roof instead of a chimney.

Within a couple of hours aRoma woman walked in and told them she would be their cook and cleaner. A couple of burly men waited outside. They were so intimidated that they agreed.

They paid her a lot of money every week to buy food but she ripped them off by buying just the cheapest meat she could and poor veggies. They tried a few times to end their agreement but she just started screaming at them and waving her arms about and pointing at her henchmen
