Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

Tear gas affects the police who use it too - my policeman son has been in hospital over this.
There are some people who are determined to stir up trouble and the mindless thugs who perpetrated the violence are easy to manipulate.
It's important that we all keep open minds because 'disinformation' wears many masks

I agree

Now rioting in Sunderland sad

Cadeby Fri 02-Aug-24 21:03:04

What the hell is it with Sunderlan? Left behind , bitter, emebedded view of the past maybe.

MayBee70 Fri 02-Aug-24 21:14:03

They’re probably missing all the EU funding they used to get….

Casdon Fri 02-Aug-24 21:19:23

Levelling up delivered nothing to deprived former industrial towns and cities. They have been failed.

maddyone Fri 02-Aug-24 21:22:56

Oh gosh, it’s all kicked off again, in Sunderland. Why don’t these people realise this has got nothing to do with those three little girls? Their poor parents, it’s heartbreaking.

Agreed, they are being used.

Casdon Fri 02-Aug-24 21:36:55

It’s their poor wives and families in many cases though rather than their parents - these are by no means all young lads. Watch the video of the car being set alight.

Syracute I think it's a bit out of order to attribute 'veiled support' for violence to sazzl
No-one in their right mind supports this kind of thing, but the sort of attitude that attributes 'veiled support' for violence to anyone who speaks out against immigration is exactly what fuels the frustration of those people - and I am one - who can see the problems. We are not talking about war-torn families - men, women and children - arriving here for succour. The concern is the number of single young men who are coming here, to be fed, housed, cared for, given money... This is not covered on mainstream media. Those concerns are silenced. We have been manipulated into self-censorship - 'Do not DARE say a word against immigration, or you will be spurned and called racist'
It is not racist to be concerned about one's culture and to wish to safeguard it
It is not racist to be concerned about the dangers uncontrolled immigration from cultures more brutal than ours (yes, I said BRUTAL) can pose to our grandchildren.
It's time we turned 'woke' into 'awake' and were more realistic.
Otherwise there will be many more incidents such as Southport

these concerns are silenced.
Who silences concerns?
I’m with Syracute, your posts attribute support -which I see as clear, not veiled.

growstuff Fri 02-Aug-24 22:09:48

It must be the loudest silence ever!

No, it's not racist to be concerned about a handful of people coming from more brutal cultures - except that these people are escaping the brutal culture.

It is racist to be racist, which is what so many of the alleged concerns are.

And if being attacked by other cultures isn't actually the truth, it gets manufactured to suit the victim narrative.

What's the excuse for thuggery in Sunderland?

I saw a young boy on one of the videos. Terrible.

I player:

"A fire has been set next to a police building as protesters clashed with police in Sunderland during a demonstration linked to the Southport knife attack.

It follows beer cans and stones being thrown at police in riot gear outside a mosque in the city, and other clashes between rioters and the force.

Mounted officers pushed back demonstrators, some of whom were in masks, from the mosque on St Mark's Road.

Northumbria Police said its officers had been "subjected to serious violence" and advised members of the public to avoid the area.

Police also had beer barrels thrown at them, as young men chanted "whose streets, our streets".

Members of the crowd chanted in support of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, while others shouted racist slurs

Cars in the city centre have also been targeted by the group, with one overturned car being set on fire."

How is this "protecting our culture"?
Its spreading hate and division.

tickingbird Fri 02-Aug-24 22:46:41

I’ve just switched on the news and a police station is on fire. I don’t agree with this and I don’t believe anyone on here supports this mayhem. I don’t know whether this is really far right or just copy cat thuggery.

Either way it’s appalling.

tickingbird Fri 02-Aug-24 22:49:05

I just hope this doesn’t result in different communities fighting each other on our streets as it would be horrendous.

tickingbird Fri 02-Aug-24 22:51:14

Is it not possible to shut down some SM for a week to allow things to calm down?

Wyllow3 Fri 02-Aug-24 23:04:02

When mosques are being attacked, that seems to be what these rioters are trying to promote - division and hatred.

I just find it so bizarre when it's said "our culture needs protecting"

" so turn out and riot".

That would be brilliant tickingbird but possible?

Syracute Fri 02-Aug-24 23:04:46

Many of the really dark discussions are on foreign social media and the dark web . There are too many .

Wyllow3 Fri 02-Aug-24 23:05:53

Have we the power to block X and similar? People do get banned from these platforms.

Galaxy Fri 02-Aug-24 23:08:48

A country that shuts down social media is not a country I would want to live in either.

maddyone Fri 02-Aug-24 23:14:23

I have never had Twitter/X and I never will. Some people using it are evil.

maddyone Fri 02-Aug-24 23:15:04

And I certainly don’t mean any of our Gransnetters by that.

People can use it without getting sucked in. I feel that ignoring what people think is sticking one's head in the sand. X (like all media sources) is one way to avoid living in a bubble.
