I agree Dickens. I’ve fiubd myself wondering what kind of messages grandchildren get from us. My two grandpa’s were both in ww1. My paternal grandpa worked in a cotton mill, his family definitely working class. My maternal grandpa worked in the office of a towel manufacturer, his family had a shop and a car.
They were patient, gentle, kind , gentle men. Their politics were liberal I suppose. Paternal grandpa told me he’d applied for poor law relief in the late 20’s-early 30’s when the mill was of short time or closed. He was told to chop up and burn grannies sideboard and the organ dad was learning to play. Until they had nothing they’d get nowt. He believed the Labour Party could improve things for working people.
Maternal grandpa was officially a Liberal. He was very clear that the yiung Germans running the pow camp he was in, were exactly like him and the other British soldiers. They were patriotic and answered the call if their country. He didn’t see my generation doing this -‘ you’re so much better educated than we were.’
I;l be forever grateful for my kind, liberal grandfathers. I hope my influence on my grandchildren is as posituve
