Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

We dont know many facts about the current situation growstuff.

No, we don't.

However, a certain scumbag of an MP seems to think he knows more than the rest of us and has used the murder of three little girls and injuries to others for his own political point scoring. Absolutely disgusting!

growstuff Tue 30-Jul-24 23:08:49

Actually, there's already quite a bit of video evidence. Let's see how many people the police identify and arrest.

The attack on the children at that party, Rondoallaturc, is so inconceivable that it is beyond comprehension that anyone, of any race, nationality, colour, age, sex, gender, or faith should even contemplate it. To use it as grounds for attacking anything or anyone until the full facts are known is totally irresponsible, as is making insinuations about UK immigrants.

Well said grumppa.

How dare the BNP use a community like this in distress?

Wyllow3 Tue 30-Jul-24 23:20:45

Guardian article has video of the thugs, yes, identities clear.

Very shortly after the dreadful incident people were spreading misinformation for their own ends, to invent an excuse to promote their racist agenda and violence. It was SO obvious yet even on Gransnet misinformation was being reposted with the insistence it was true. It is absolutely disgusting. Now is the time for respect, not violence, false accusations, thuggery - idle speculation and abhorrent gossip. The poor children of Southport must be trembling in their beds with fear.
Every thug at that mosque tonight should be eradicated from this earth. Every person spreading false rumours, whether intentional or blindly, should be held to account.
Bless the families, the children, our first responders and all those who hold truth dear.

Infortunately OldFrill it's not possible to eradicate these thugs, but I agree with every other word you've written - including those on GN.

I know that the perpetrator of this horrible attack is only 17 years old, and so given the right to remain anonymous, but I seriously wonder if his identity was released, if it would calm the situation. I wonder if people are aggrieved because they think the authorities are shielding him.

You reckon they have the capacity to think?

No, it's irrelevant. They have no excuse for attacking a mosque and the police, even if the perpetrator were Anjem Choudary.

People were fed intentional lies to suit the EDL's agenda. It's too late to stop the aftermath, they do not want the truth. These are not 'reasonable' people

People have no right to take the law into their own hands. Releasing the name of a minor would just be pandering to them. The irony is that they claim that authorities pander to others, even though the evidence on arrests doesn't support that.

Meanwhile, Tommy Robinson was arrested yesterday, bailed, broke his bail conditions and left the country.

My guess is the information will be public knowledge in a matter of days, we arent in the 1970s, it is not generally possible to keep that information secret any more.

So what?

We don't have the information now and nobody has the right to incite the kind of violence which happened in Southport today. Apparently, Tommy Robinson has been on TikTok all day telling his supporters to go to Southport.

Even if the murderer is a Muslim, it doesn't make every other Muslim guilty.

There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of pre-planned mindless thuggery.

People's thought should be with the family of the dead and injured in Southport, not being even more traumatised by violence in the streets.

Galaxy Wed 31-Jul-24 00:13:55

I didnt say anyone should be inciting violence did I, I think the information will be available in the public sphere fairly quickly. I think pretending it wont be is futile.

I was born in Southport
. Left at 9 months and never visited since Never returned but thought it was a peaceful place.

Galaxy Wed 31-Jul-24 00:20:46

I think there is some attempt by the media, etc to hide information about the perpetrator, I understand why they are doing that, particularly in light of his age but it is futile. I dont even think they have any choice, but the fact they are really bad at it doesnt help matters.

Well it's been chaos round here. My daughter lives very close by. I was there looking after my youngest grandson and suddenly the police sirens were heard, emergency vehicles flashing past. Friends who live by the mosque turned up as the police had told the people living in that street to leave.

Black acrid smoke filled the air, luckily it's died down. It's all quietening thank goodness but we're hoping this doesn't kick off again.

It's all madness. Don't know what they want! The boy is 17, he won't be named and what good would that even do.

We know he was born in Wales and lived a quiet life with his family. None of whom have been in trouble with the police.

So much speculation and fake news. It's never ending. The wonderful Internet which we all love is the cause of this. Social Media has a lot to answer to.

But hopefully we can concentrate on sending love and wishes to those still in hospital.

It's so sad. The families will not want this violent aggression. Their lives have been ruined. All that is needed now is peace and love and support. Let's hope they get that.

It is illegal for the media to identify the 17 year old even though they know his name, because he is under 18.
Obviously many people are aware who he is. At some point it is likely reporting restrictions will be lifted and he will be identified.
Arrangements will have to be made to protect his family.

I'm beginning to wonder if this wasn't really directed at Muslims but at the police, against whom Tommy Robinson has a grudge. He skipped bail yesterday and an arrest warrant has been issued in Spain. He needs to keep the narrative going that it's the police against "us" and he wants to try and show that the police deal with Muslims more leniently than people like him. He's been on and on all day about how his arrest is unfair and the police and "establishment" have it in for him. He's used the fake news about the attacker in Southport to incite his followers and has been telling people to go there. I don't have polite words I could write on GN to describe what I think of him (or Farage, who also made a recording hinting that the attacker is Muslim). The latter is an MP and should be more responsible.
