Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

OK suit yourself. A rescuer, a saviour?
Poetic licence!

Any counter protests are just counter productive. I don’t like Mick Lynch.

Me neither.
Mick Lynch is indeed a good communicator and influential.
But I don't understand why he is being hailed as a Messiah on here when he was a actually a strong Brexiteer who encouraged all the RMT members to vote for Brexit too?

He’ll undermine Starmers authority too given half a chance.

Galaxy Wed 07-Aug-24 19:00:18

I dont agree with him but I couldnt care less how he voted in the referendum.

It does to me because it makes me question his reasoning. I’m not sure that Brexit has helped his union members in any way.

One thing above all else I’m grateful for was Brexit . Pity about those with holiday homes that need more paperwork as it must be tedious but worth it as it means not held to account by Brussels.

Yes, it's rather odd.

But then times like these may call for strange bedfellows
(Not that I'm suggesting any Gransnetter would get up to anything improper with Mick Lynch! shock)

Allsorts, Brexit was a total disaster. If the only negative was ‘a bit more paperwork for people with holiday homes’ we’d all be doing well

Fleurpepper Wed 07-Aug-24 20:31:07

Yes, I know. Brexit is a total disaster for GB, and mostly for workers and labourers of every kind. Can't ever forgive Lynch for this. And NO Allsorts, it has NOT made us free of Brussels at all- as we are dependent on EU for the majority or our imports and exports, even for essentials- which have all become so so much more expensive. What sort of freedom is this?

But, the speech by Lynch on the riots is brilliant, and I will not let the Brexit disaster in the way of supporting his stance here.

Unity, tolerance, humanity- are so so much more important- and he's got it right here.

I don't 'like him' either.

Hearing of mass presence of those who want peace and unity, and fight fascism and racism, in places like Brighton- are certainly NOT counter productive. Just wonderful, let's hope the right wing will not be able to provoke a reaction.

Fleurpepper Wed 07-Aug-24 20:34:00

A friend jst posted about similar gatherings in Manchester- happily chanting 'there are more of us then there are you' - singing, dancing, laughing, smiling - true British values.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 07-Aug-24 20:37:03

This is so the way to go.

Back to flower power!, remember that?

JaneJudge Wed 07-Aug-24 20:37:49

It isn’t brilliant though. It would best if we all didn’t get involved with these violent scum. We are all staying in.

Not in Brighton they aren’t.

They have turned up be the hundreds of thousands welcomed the racists with drag queens, samba bands, glitter and love, and entertainment by a band.

It seems to have worked - the positive vibes are completely defusing the situation.

Brexit was a disaster. Still is.

Perhaps you meant to be sarcastic?

Wyllow3 Wed 07-Aug-24 20:48:22

Its great by me to have positive peaceful rallies - as long as they stay away from engagement with violent thugs.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 07-Aug-24 20:49:29

Such a wonderful development WWM.
There are, indeed, more of us than there are of them.

Wyllow3 Wed 07-Aug-24 20:53:35

The BBC I player live reporting has also reported that the Telegram platform has been taking down calls and organisation for the violence.

Interesting.

So far, not a lot of riot reports

Iam64 Wed 07-Aug-24 21:00:37

This response to the thugs is fantastic. I love the `Brighton response but how great to see peaceful counter protests

Wyllow3 Wed 07-Aug-24 21:21:20

Not many rioters turning up.

either the social media platforms have been disabled enough -

or the rioters have overstretched themselves

- or its a deliberate tactic to re group?

Joseann Wed 07-Aug-24 21:23:39

Our son says there's a party going on in Bristol!

OnwardandUpward Wed 07-Aug-24 21:24:22

Hooray for Brighton . I don't live there but where I live the peaceful protest was amazing too.

Here were hundreds of peaceful protesters and only about six fascists who looked and acted ridiculously, draped in flags and drinking lager...The others must be keyboard warriors or maybe have gone to a place more likely to get violent.

LizzieDrip Wed 07-Aug-24 21:49:05

This is the Britain that I know and love❤️💕

I agree with you JaneJudge
It would be best all round now if everyone stayed off the streets.
Even with the counter groups the masked people look intimidating and it makes the streets no go areas.
I think there’s now a really good reason to not allow any masks or face coverings at protests.

Doesn’t look like that on Sky News at the moment.

Seen on a banner EDL

English
Dickhead
League

They will now always be known by that.
