Riots in Southport

I’m fuming about this, allegedly the English Defence League, attacking a local mosque, police attacked and vehicle set on fire. The police have reiterated ‘ the person under arrest was born in the UK’ and to ignore misinformation on social media.
Those poor residents grieving and in shock without the EDL basically stirring.

But Dickens, we took back control of our borders. Didn’t we confused?

Indeed we did (not) grin

Great to hear that Cyprus authorities have volunteered to help extradite Yaxley-Lennon back to UK

Now waiting for Spanish authrorities to stop him returning to Spain where he apparently lives (he loves the UK so much!) and to investigate thoroughly his legal status there, his finances, funding and taxes. Can't wait.

🥳🥳🥳🥳

Don't you mean Tommeh?

annsixty Wed 07-Aug-24 17:34:51

Small matter in the light of things I know but a friend and I have had to cancel dinner plans tonight as a protest is planned very near to us centred on a firm of solicitors dealing with immigrants.
As it will probably spread to a hotel housing immigrants in Stockport my GD and hundreds of others have been sent home mid afternoon in case of trouble when they are all leaving their work.

Cadeby Wed 07-Aug-24 17:35:03

Perhaps he wants to be an ex pat?

Cadeby Wed 07-Aug-24 17:37:52

The people is the Hotel in Stockport were locked in for their own safety.

I hope people are proud of what they have created.

Law firms under seige. People terrified.

Perhaps an update on numbers arriving> Or some bon mots form NF mgith help?

This shows just how many far-right organisations we have in England currently, it’s pretty awful!

Stories to make your heart soar. Just one person turned up for a far right rally in Doncaster. Thanks to Mick Lynch reminding workers that all need to unite, with each other, for each other, in fighting fascism.

We also have an alleged “event” in our local High Street, outside an immigration solicitors office. My daughter was sent home earlier so we could avoid being on the train.

A counter group, “Southend Against Fascism” have vowed to counter protest.

I’m about 5 minutes walk from this office and frankly it’s scary!

RMT boss makes the case for ‘fighting hatred’ in every generation

His speech was a brief one, but the message was clear: Mick Lynch says he is prepared to turn out ‘every week, in every town’ to oppose the violence on our streets – and he wants working class citizens to do the same.

“The working people of the UK, Ireland, and Europe are going to defeat hatred. The message of our class is that we’re one people united, in one struggle. We refuse to be divided, we won’t let these people get amongst us and cause us to hate each other. We will come through.”

“We must fight these fights in every generation. Tony Benn once said there is no final victory, and no final defeat. We have to fight these battles again and again. We fought them in the 1930s, the 1950s, and the 1970s – we won’t allow the right-wing to dominate our community.”

“We will come together every week, in every town, and bring the message in solidarity to people within our communities. We are with you, and we stand with you no matter what they try to do to us.” | Mick Lynch

I wouldn't want to do that tonight though and our council has advised against any involvement from our community. I have been into town today and there was a noticeable police presence but they are not marching in central town. They are apparently marching by the gurdwara confused

MayBee70 Wed 07-Aug-24 17:54:36

Any counter protests are just counter productive. I don’t like Mick Lynch.

Galaxy Wed 07-Aug-24 17:56:55

It's certainly not what is being advised by my local authority employers.

Oreo Wed 07-Aug-24 18:27:42

I don’t think that we or the Police want running battles between two different groups, it makes policing even harder.
It’s to be hoped that the fast sentencing of offenders dampens any far right spirit, and if it doesn’t it might do for those who just want to do a bit of light looting or watching.

Me neither.
Mick Lynch is indeed a good communicator and influential.
But I don't understand why he is being hailed as a Messiah on here when he was a actually a strong Brexiteer who encouraged all the RMT members to vote for Brexit too?

Iam64 Wed 07-Aug-24 18:40:14

The EDL is coming to my town tonight. Marching through one of the areas where many Muslims live, there’s a mosque and several business run by families of ‘Muslim faith

Police riot vans ready. Senior police asking for there to be no counter demonstrations. We have a strong anti fascist group and I expect some will feel duty bound to show up to oppose the EDL. I will stay away, as I’m sure will most, despite our loathing of these people with their disgusting belief systems

It's appalling.
The same is happening in my area of East London which is such a diverse multicultural area.

Nobody is hailing him as a Messiah? He is articulate, that's a start.

Well, a previous poster was keen to copy 4 paragraphs from his speech!

Quite a leap from copied speech to Messiah.

In the case of the riots, as of now, I don't think counter demonstrations are a bright idea. But if I was on the list they have put about which involve attacking private homes should the family stay away and let them be destroyed or would you want supportive people there?

I hope very much that Tommy Robinson can be amongst the charged as to incitement.
