Does anybody else find this the strangest of coincidences?
Or have I seen The Godfather once too often?
Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of the finance company Autonomy, was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning, his lawyer said.
Mr Chamberlain had faced the same charges of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss Mr Lynch - one of seven, I think, people known to have died after his luxury yacht was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off Sicily early on Monday.

I said this to DH yesterday.

To add to the coincidence, the lawyer who acted for them in the fraud case was also aboard the yacht…

Yes the thought crossed my mind but ruled it out as beeing too far-fetched but you never know. Maybe Hewlit Packard bear a grudge.

J52 Fri 23-Aug-24 11:49:20

Indeed very curious. The yacht design and builder claims it was virtually unsinkable unless a hatch or door had been left open. But then again there’s the Titanic!
All very sad.

Not even The Godfather could have created water spouts to order. Although there may be a case to answer as the captain may not have been following full safety protocols?
It’s very tragic all in all. Do we know who run over Stephen Chamberlain?

Newatthis Fri 23-Aug-24 11:50:36

Yes indeed! I too find it very 'co-incidental'

Ran over …

Another twist GrannyGravy
And it was anchored off Sicily known for being the heartland of an organisation you would not mistake for the WI.

Yes, a disturbing number of coincidences.
Almost impossible to prove.
Will lead to numerous 'investigations' and theories like the Marie Celeste.

Quite honestly not even the Mafia can conjure up water spouts …. I have seen them on board a ferry and they are a sight to behold.

Just one of those co-incidences in life, tho meat and drink to any conspiracy theorists out there.
The storm/ water spouts were awful am surprised so many were saved.

I don’t buy it. According to BBC News ‘Mr Chamberlain died in hospital after the crash on the A1123 at Stretham in Cambridgeshire at about 10:10 BST on Saturday.
The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.’

Also, it would be a very incompetent way of ensuring Mike Lynch had died to deliberately sink his yacht in the middle of the day, when two thirds of the people on board were on deck wouldn’t it?

Conspiracy reigns.
Waterspout conjured up to order. Perhaps a magic spell incantation ?? Don't think they would have wanted all the other poor people gone as well.
Poor man out for a run, dreadful accident that unfortunately happens.

Oreo Fri 23-Aug-24 12:29:41

I agree that it’s a strange coincidence but hard to think it’s anything more than that with all the evidence, a woman driver causing the accident and a weather event causing the other.

JaneJudge Fri 23-Aug-24 12:34:46

it is all very weird isn't it confused

Sarnia Fri 23-Aug-24 12:35:01

The conspiracy theorists and karma believers must be wetting themselves over this one.

Meanwhile, people have lost loved ones in these 2 accidents and I hope the dark side of social media allows them some time to grieve in peace and dignity.

The body of Hannah has now been found.

The body of Hannah has now been found.

Her poor mother, lost both husband and daughter.

How did some of them escape and not others?

I assumed everyone would be asleep in their cabins.

Casdon Fri 23-Aug-24 13:08:44

It was early morning I think, but it would have been very hot, so lots of people would probably opt to sleep on deck rather than in their cabins. Sicily has had very hot weather this summer, in the forties some days.

M0nica Fri 23-Aug-24 13:29:34

This is a case of the 1: 10 million chance. Nothing remotely suspect about it what so ever.

I do not think it can be assumed that all were in their cabins. If the storm was exceptional, some may have preferred to sit it out in the saloon, which was at deck level.

DH is a Naval Architect, a ship designer, althought we worked in the offshore industry. This boat was state of the art designed by someone who patented his first invention at 20. He was constantly pushing the limits of technology on these ships to reduce crew size and it was claimed this ship could be sailed by one man with a joystick.

DH says that often when you are pushing design like this, everything might look fine on a computer print out, but instinct tells you there could be dangers and where they might be. The problem with virtuoso designers is that they generally do not brook criticism or doubts.

The cause could be hubris, it could be a 'Black swan ' event that couldn't be forseen - like the wind spout, it could be material fatigue of some kind, or human error. DH refuses to commit himself until he has more information.

RosesandLilac Fri 23-Aug-24 13:32:53

I find it strange that there were four days of warnings about storms yet it seems that no preventative measures were taken. Or perhaps there was an assumption that all would be well….
Very sad.

Casdon Fri 23-Aug-24 13:38:21

Whatever happened, some of them were definitely sleeping on deck beforehand, because the mother who saved her baby from the sea said so when she was interviewed. It must have been terrifying.

Babs03 Fri 23-Aug-24 13:51:22

Stranger things happen as the saying goes.
We had a neighbour with twin boys, when they grew up one of them joined the army and was sadly killed in action in Afghanistan, and the other was killed a day later whilst travelling in a taxi to his parents house when a driver had a heart attack at the wheel and ploughed into the taxi.
It happens.

Grantanow Fri 23-Aug-24 13:58:37

Coincidences are grist to conspiracy mongers.

keepingquiet Fri 23-Aug-24 14:01:39

Don't we, but especially the media, love a good conspiracy?

The truth is always much more mundane, incompetence and coincidence.
