Hezbollah Exploding Pagers!

9 dead (so far) up to 3,000 Hezbollah operatives injured across Lebanon and Syria.

Apparently the pagers were manufactured in TaiWan and packed with explosives. The Taiwanese producers are vehemently denying this.

Israeli Government is being rather quiet, no statement so far. Hezbollah have said that there will be serious repercussions

It is like a plot from a Johnny English film…

Delila Wed 18-Sept-24 13:12:29

No, not brilliant. Cruel and indiscriminate. These explosions injured anyone in close proximity to the device including innocent bystanders.

Wyllow3 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:22:36

It really does seem intractable. so called "clever" move or dragging all out war in the region closer? Israel has not officially accepted responsibility

www.haaretz.com

Front page gives an idea of just how complicated and fraught tensions are over the region and sometimes just bizarre - like
"Israel Is Recruiting African Asylum Seekers for Life-threatening Gaza War Operations, Promising Permanent Legal Status". Putin involved. Previously peaceful Jordan great concerns. Gaza apparently forgotten but 1.9 million out of a population of 2 million displaced...

12 killed including two children, 3,000 injured the majority of injuries are to the face and hands.
Truly merciless.

Motjabi Amani was killed he is the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon. Iran is the puppet master!

These people do not think twice about launching missiles at innocents.

War is a dirty business, and the Middle East is at war.

David49 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:25:46

Provoke Israel and they will hit back, they have a “dirty tricks” department, the pagers were held by Hezbollah members and legitimate targets.

I cannot believe the lack of compassion shown by some posters on here.. killing is never acceptable..

Hezbollah are a terrorist organisation, they knew what they were getting into when they joined up.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:56:21

Whilst I can sympathise with any innocents who were injured yesterday, I have less than zero sympathy with Hezbollah terrorists.

In one GG13.

MissInterpreted
Up until 2022 Hezbollah held 71 seats out of 128 in the Lebanese parliament.
By the law of averages it appears a lot of poor innocents voted for them.

I doubt the two children killed in yesterday's incidents did. But judging from some of the comments on here, some people seem to find that quite acceptable. And let me just add, I have no sympathy for terrorists of any persuasion - but I do for those who are caught up in incidents like this through no fault of their own, especially innocent children.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 18-Sept-24 14:18:29

War is a dirty game. Rules are not always followed - on both sides. We are all old enough to know that. Collateral damage. Awful expression. Heart rending to contemplate really.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 18-Sept-24 14:25:38

Interesting but not surprising that the Iranian Ambassador had a Hezbollah pager.

Wyllow3 Wed 18-Sept-24 14:31:12

Post 2022 Hezbollah lost overall control -

So "they voted them in" as justifying "they deserve it"?

it was valuable for me to fact check to read the results of the last elections and just how many don't back Hezbollah and who the groups actually are

Wyllow3 Wed 18-Sept-24 14:48:33

Jeremy Bowen has written this thoughtful article on the pagers, what was possibly intended was far more, and of the tensions in the area
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30lpyl46z3o

what struck me (amongst others) was this;

"Everything at the moment in terms of de-escalation in the Middle East depends on Gaza.

While that war continues, whether it’s conflict with Lebanon, whether it’s attacks in the Red Sea from the Houthis, whether it’s tensions with Iraq;

nothing is going to de-escalate."

M0nica Wed 18-Sept-24 14:59:38

Frankly, it is six of one to half a dozen of the other.

Both sides have the implicit support of most of the inhabitants of their benighted countries. It is these silent majorities that elected Hamas into power in Gaza and the West Bank and Netanyahu and his right wing supporters into power in Israel.

A plague on both their houses.

Wyllow3 Wed 18-Sept-24 15:11:15

A great many Israeli people are unhappy with the war cabinet - which is what the Israeli movement now have instead of a regular government.

Haaretz the newspaper I quoted upthread is speculating that Netanyahu is waiting for the result of the US elections before making crucial decisions. Money for arms at stake.

"Israeli Army Is Ready to Turn Attention to the North, but Netanyahu Stalls Until After U.S. Elections

In the absence of a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Hezbollah is keeping its commitment to continue engaging the IDF on the border.

The IDF has now declared the defeat of Hamas' Rafah Brigade, taking away Netanyahu's excuse for continuing the war in Gaza"

I’m no fan of Netanyahu but I suspect any leader would make the same decision.

Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has a history of carrying out international terrorist attacks.

These terrorist fighters are not representative of many of the Lebanese people.

I think it’s a brilliant idea. More power to their elbow.
I don’t care who manufactured them, it worked.

I agree.
Great result and much embarrassment for Hezbolla.

Not surprising at all.

Second instalment…

SKY are reporting that there are more explosions in Lebanon, this time it appears to be Hezbollahs walkie talkies

They’d better start communicating with semaphore😄

Boz Wed 18-Sept-24 16:11:55

Dastardly, but clever.

Babs03 Wed 18-Sept-24 16:20:16

My thoughts are with those bystanders injured or killed, and I worry that this kind of technology could threaten us all if it falls into the wrong hands. I mean imagine if a terrorist group found a way to target western leaders or those close to them.
Before we cheer for this latest technology let’s think seriously of the ramifications.

petra Wed 18-Sept-24 16:25:11

You would think that they’d be using burner phones, wouldn’t you 🤷‍♀️ someone’s missed a business opportunity there.
No doubt someone’s thinking about it 😉

BigBopper Wed 18-Sept-24 16:27:29

If they can manufacture them with bombs then all electronic systems such as phones, tablets, watches, computers etc. manufactured in different countries can be manufactured with bombs.

It is frightening.

Exactly that.
Yet some think that it is worthy of praise.
Yeah it’s clever. But then so are nukes.

biglouis Wed 18-Sept-24 16:44:02

Shades of "Battlestar Galactica" where they had to revert to older technology because the Cylons were able to hack their modern commnications.

No one comes up smelling very nice from this scenario. Certainly not Israel with their mass killing of civilians.
