And it it any wonder - chopping Winter Fuel Payments, the 25% discount on Council Tax looks like that's going out the window (and bus passes aren't safe) but at least the PM and his Missus will be well dressed while all this is being inflicted on the goodly voters.......76,000 quids worth of freebies.

To those that already have plenty even more will be given.

The rest of us will have to queue up at the Parish Workhouse.

What makes you say that, easybee? If you can point to one thing I've copied from elsewhere, one trope, one meme, one repeated slogan, I'll certainly have a think, but I'd be surprised if you can.

My opinion may differ from those opposed to a Labour government, but I use my own words and back up what I say with my own thoughts. I don't think I am indoctrinated, but I will listen to any evidence you can find to suggest otherwise.

Trueloveways Thu 26-Sept-24 18:22:17

He’s gone up in my estimation.

Mollygo Thu 26-Sept-24 18:27:42

Indoctrinated to defend KS whatever he does maybe?

Casdon Thu 26-Sept-24 18:36:58

Mollygo

Indoctrinated to defend KS whatever he does maybe?

How would that be achieved? The indoctrination of elderly women by only reading pro Labour media would be quite a challenge. Perhaps there are pro Labour cyber bots out there, or a subliminal message in BBC news bulletins? Do tell!

Mollygo Thu 26-Sept-24 18:39:15

Is that what’s been happening? Is that what’s made all those posters on here so desperate to support anything Starmer says or does?
Thanks for keeping me up to date about why it’s happening.

Casdon Thu 26-Sept-24 18:44:43

I have absolutely no idea what you meant, or knew that I didn’t when you said it Mollygo, that’s why I asked you what you meant!

Mollygo Thu 26-Sept-24 20:27:22

LizzieDrip
You mentioned people being indoctrinated..

People are being indoctrinated (not saying all but a significant number)!

I’m just giving my view of where the indoctrination is coming from and what it’s aiming to do.
And I’m not saying all, either, but a significant number.

Doodledog Thu 26-Sept-24 21:42:29

I, too, would be interested to know who is defending everything KS does, and how they are being indoctrinated.

What I said was as follows:
I have concerns of my own. One of them is that the right wing press is persuading people that Bad Things will happen and people are believing it without finding out the facts or waiting to see. Another is that bots are posting disinformation all over the Internet.

I didn't mention indoctrination, but explained what my concerns are and I stand by them. On GN alone there are scare stories about bus passes, CT discounts and free prescriptions being cancelled, and people join in enthusiastically to say how awful the LP is for doing these things, when there is zero evidence that they will. People are repeating 'witticisms' such as 'Two Tier Keir' and 'Victoria Sponge' which are directly lifted from others and require no critical thinking whatsoever.

Can anyone point to a case of someone doing that in defence of the government, and/or someone who has defended KS in everything he does? Just one will do. People have spoken in defence of policies, and given reasons for doing so. I have seen nobody say 'He is wonderful and the best PM ever' - that sort of unconsidered comment comes 100% from people who dislike him. Nobody has called him 'Wise Seer Keir' or similar - again, the names and slogans come from the detractors.

ronib Thu 26-Sept-24 22:06:01

I tried very hard to put my prejudices aside when KS came to power. So be it I said. I genuinely gave him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the country will turn the corner now etc. It’s important to have a working economy and blah…..

Now I won’t even turn on my tv to watch the news. I did pick up on Elon Musk refusing to engage with the UK. So much for our global influence and trade. There’s something a bit weird do we think?

Casdon Thu 26-Sept-24 22:27:58

Do you think there’s something weird about not inviting a powerful, irresponsible weirdo who actively encouraged riots in the UK with a view to creating civil war here ronib? Sorry, but he can stick his global empire up his a..e as far as I’m concerned.

ronib Thu 26-Sept-24 22:34:10

Well put like that…. But excluding the richest man in the world might be counterproductive if we’re trying to make a wealthy country? How did we get to this position?

Casdon Thu 26-Sept-24 22:48:28

He put the UK into a position where his presence was untenable. It certainly isn’t, and shouldn’t be all about money. He has a malign influence which is much bigger than just our involvement with him too in my opinion.

Casdon Thu 26-Sept-24 22:51:51

This is a US site, but reputable. It shows the drop in use in the UK and EU as well as USA.

Casdon Elon Musk can afford for X to fail. DH pointed out that Elon Musk is right wing so he won’t want to be involved with UK government initiatives.
We need him more than he needs us am tempted to say?

I think you’re wrong in saying that ronib, but no doubt there are as many opinions as there are Gransnetters.

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 10:09:43

Casdon what exactly am I wrong about this time?

Casdon Fri 27-Sept-24 10:11:26

That we need him more than he needs us?

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 10:12:14

Casdon his money making record speaks for itself. As does ours ….

Doodledog Fri 27-Sept-24 10:15:57

Why do we need Musk?

Casdon Fri 27-Sept-24 10:16:46

It is not all about money ronib. He doesn’t pay his tax in the UK, does he? Even if he did it wouldn’t change my opinion of him and the way he runs his business. What he does do is use his financial clout to behave irresponsibly in trying to influence politics worldwide. If you find that acceptable, that’s your opinion. In my opinion that is very wrong.

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 10:20:58

Doodledog isn’t Musk a highly successful entrepreneur?
One son has just started working for an entrepreneur after a gruesome experience with a startup company. Some people just have a knack of making profits and others don’t. If Musk had been willing to open a car factory here as suggested in talks with Sunak, we should welcome him. We need people like Musk to dig us out of all the black holes Reeves keeps talking about. A hole filler?

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 10:23:09

Casdon okay

I genuinely don’t think those of us who voted for the Labour Party are blindsided, indoctrinated, brainwashed or in any way unaware of any of Starmer’s shortcoming or faults

He is a human, like the rest of us.

In common with many LP supporters I’m saddened and disappointed by some of their actions.

I don’t like the way the WFA has been withdrawn, but in principle I agree it shouldn’t be universally paid.

There are other more minor things with which I don’t agree, however I’m still optimistic that given time the LP will act positively for the country as a whole, not just cronies and the rich.

I completely agree! Some of his comments and attitude on X and his apparent allegiance to Trump is enough for me not to want him influencing anything in our own country.

ronib Fri 27-Sept-24 10:39:02

Elon Musk is going to continue using his clout against the left wing. We know this.
Shame that we couldn’t get over ourselves and use his undoubted skill set to get this country manufacturing or just plain making money.
