Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".
I'm assuming that, because of the suffix -ier on words, which is often pronunced as -eer, our automatic spelling of his name defaults to Kier on hearing it. I think the sound comes from Middle French, so you get cavalier, grenadier etc. and more modern words like cashier.
I read an interesting article about KS in a German newspaper recently, and they too obviously have problems. Starmers Vorname wird »Kier« ausgesprochen. Starmer's name is pronounced Kier.
Except that in French the pronunciation of ier is more ee-ay (ay as in day). The origin of Keir is Gaelic and Scottish.
I commented that there are those who just can't bring themselves to acknowledge that the Labour Party is now in government, so insist on calling them 'Labour'. It was just a comment, and at no point did I say that anyone 'must' do anything. If you must make snide comments, please don't twist people's words?
Oh lighten up Doodledog! I wasn't going to trawl back over threads to see whether the word was must or should or whatever. It was just the message that came across to me. My comment here was not snidey, I had no idea who made the post in question.
I also found this! Keir is a Village in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, UK. The village was the birthplace of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the inventor of the bicycle. A plaque on his home, Courthill Smithy, commemorates this. He is buried in the parish church.
He was misnamed at birth.Keir Hardie will be spinning in his grave at how his labour party is performing not to mention the "sir" who is running it.Its no more labour than Thatchers government was .
I thought I heard somewhere that Cate had to start spelling it Kate to differentiate her initial from the Queen's.
Which Queen? Queen Caroline? I thought that our late Queen was called Elizabeth (Alexandra Mary)or Liz at a push. Am I missing something?
Queen Camilla?
I suspect this was a kind of ‘not my queen’ post, or one saying that Camilla was to be Princess Consort, which was the case until the late Queen Elizabeth II said it was her wish that Camilla be Queen Consort.
Goodness knows, Wyllow3 - it’s something that does often make me wonder!
On a similar theme, I’ve previously seen threads about butter, where posters say they love Lurpack and won’t buy anything else. So if they’ve bought dozens of packs of it, how come they still can’t spell Lurpak?
