Its Keir Starmer, not Kier Starmer

Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".

Queer Stammer?

Clearly homophobia and jibes against those who stutter alive and kicking.

MissAdventure Fri 25-Oct-24 12:19:44

My friend had a surname beginning with C, and quite unusual.

She showed me a letter one day, addressed to 'Mrs Coalhole' grin

I thought I heard somewhere that Cate had to start spelling it Kate to differentiate her initial from the Queen's.

I do8bt that thst is true, after all we had Queen Elizabeth an Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth.

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 12:26:34

doubt
that

Repeat 100 times.

Of course, I’m a Furriner, don’t have a Brutish passport what do you think? Just uneducated.

Digressing from the OP, but I’m pleased that Camilla has the ‘Queen’ title.

If they had persisted in the ‘Princess Consort’, how silly that would have been.

Always knew Charles would get it sorted. 👍🏻

This is an excellent thread which demonstrates the need to protect the LP, even from spelling errors.
Originally I referred to KS as Starmer because I couldn’t remember if it was i before e or not, but once I’d been reprimanded for that here on GN, I stopped worrying about whether it was Kier or Keir and just used Starmer or KS. It makes life easier.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Oct-24 13:17:28

Can't answer for others but I try with people from different POV as regards getting the name right.
Eg in the Conservative Leadership have trouble recalling Badenoch versus Badenhoch and Jenrick versus Jenwick etc.

Oreo Fri 25-Oct-24 13:23:56

Keir is an odd name to spell and tbh who cares if GN members get it wrong.
I tend to put KS anyway so don’t need to remember the name.

Online, I tend to use initials for everyone, sometimes after using the whole name the first time, in case of confusion. I'd use KS, RS (for Sunak), BJ etc, or a contraction like MissA for MisAdventure. Otherwise I am more likely to use the last name, regardless of sex, so Starmer, Thatcher, Badenoch (or Shakespeare, Blyton, Christie) but I have seen that called rude when applied to women.

I don't think the misspelling of Keir is deliberate, but I think the 'joke' names are childish and usually plagiarised, so not even witty. Each to their own though.

Obviously following the rules of spelling.

Is this reallyworthy of a thread to itself?
It won’t be the first time there are spelling mistakes on GN and however annoying, it won’t be the last

Yes but you’re missing the point. It’s misnaming Starmer !!!

Many people will not really care.

I certainly don’t and for what it’s worth I don’t like the name, Keir, Kier whatever. Give me a David, Robert, William any day.

Mollygo Fri 25-Oct-24 18:32:41

Nightsky the issue of spelling names on here is nothing compared with an EYFS teacher faced with parents who insist that their their spelling of any name is the only correct one and woe betide you if you make an error.
Actually, it is a bit like being admonished on GN.

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 19:34:53

Keir, Kier, Niamh, Neeve, Neve, Nieve, Siobhan, Shivawn,
Amy, Aimee, Catherine, Katharine, Kathryn

What's in a name?

I was once reprimanded on here too after I referred to a politician by their surname. It wasn’t Starmer. I wonder if we were admonished by the same person.😀

My favourite was Naive.
Then whether Philip had one l or two and whether Philippa had one l or two combined with one p or two ps and don’t get me started on the lectures I got from parents about Kallum, Kalom, Calum, Callum, or even Kalem being the only correct spelling.
They could very well be GN contributors now.

May I ask what ‘EYFS’ is?

Maybe ‘English ? Foreign Students?

karmalady

pedantic as always. There are more important things to concern us than spelling

Hear hear

And as I sometimes say, English for many, is not their first language.

Thank you, Googles
Early Years Foundation Stage, England only, so that’s why I wasn’t familiar with it ( and maybe because it’s nine years since I worked!)

I've had the same. I think it stems from girls being called by their first names at school - people sometimes think it is rude to use a surname, when it's normal practice to refer to some groups by surnames in their professional capacity. Authors and political figures spring to mind, but sports people too.

Do you know who it was, Molly? Why not say so, instead of implying and hinting that you're in the know? Some People, eh?

I don't know if it's me seeing a different side of you since the election, or if I just didn't see it before, but I used to see someone calling out passive aggression on trans threads (I'm not sure that we shared a presence on other ones very often) but now you seem to be the worst offender at exactly that.

We used to have a poster (ex-poster? I won't name her in case that is against the rules, but am happy to do so if not - her name could be 'Purple Airspace' if in a crossword - who used to hint at things that 'some people' did, and pretended that she could see both sides of everything and was the reasonable person on every thread. We could all see that this was far from true, however.

It is very rare that anyone other than the Dalai Lama can claim to be the voice of reason, see both sides, sit in the middle etc, however much people think they do so.

I don't think for a moment that you are fair to both sides since Labour won the election, and neither do I think that you are somehow 'in the middle', any more than Purple Airspace was when it came to trans issues.

That doesn't matter, as far as I am concerned. I have friends from all political persuasions, but as I believe in democracy I accept that people don't have to agree with me.

If someone argues, I will argue back, though. I only get personal when people attack me, however. There are historical reasons for that. I try not to let them influence my responses, but don't always manage. I do know that if people simply disagree, I just disagree back, and don't to the 'tit for tat' thing that you seem to revel in. Even people with whom I usually disagree will accept that, I think. People can, of course, feel free to come up with examples if they think I am wrong.

As you know, it is easy to go back through threads and pull up examples, so please don't do the 'I know what I am but what are you?' thing? It's not clever to try to 'Gotcha' people, and try to trip them up with 'you said this, so you must mean that' accusations, particularly when they are in code, or hidden in more complex posts.

As I've said, I can't be bothered with GN presently, so if you decide to use this defence to try to get me banned, I won't be too upset. I am not looking at leaving of my own volition, as I enjoy the company of a lot of people (whether political 'friends' or not) but it all feel so toxic just now that it feels like more trouble than it's worth.

I have things going on in my private life that I might once have come here to ask advice about, but now I wouldn't dream of it because of the spite that moves from thread to thread. The Starmer hatred has killed the sense of community that used to be here, I think.
