Its Keir Starmer, not Kier Starmer

Why do some posters constantly fail to be able to spell his name correctly? Surely we have noticed our PM is Keir after all this time? There is no such name as "Kier".

I noticed so many of those type of books yesterday in Waterstones - Starmer, Truss, Boris (no Rishi?). They seem to have replaced the Royal Family ones on the shelves. Do you think people like them as Christmas presents?

I certainly enjoy political biographies; the Sonia Purnell one about Johnson was fascinating.

I don’t think he relates to people at all. But then politicians rarely do, they are in a little world of their own. Sad really.

Have you read the Tom Bowman biography of Keir Starmer nanna8? It is available on Kindle.
I think if you did, you would find plenty of evidence to see him in a different light.

I very much doubt that many people on here want to see him in a different light sad

Mollygo Sun 27-Oct-24 12:02:50

Actually, reading the Tom Bowman will endorse your thoughts about Starmer, whichever viewpoint you hold.

Difficult to have a positive attitude towards someone who targeted one of the most vulnerable sectors of society for the harshest of cuts as his first priority. But I'm sure he'll be heartened by your one-woman fan club.

Most L Party supporters I know of in GN have also said the cut off point for WFA was too low and it's been brought up in L party meetings. We're honest enough to say "this was done OK, this, we don't agree with.

In the dire situation in June I think everyone knew there weren't any easy solutions. How will we fund the NHS? How to bring prison numbers into line with convictions? What about care services? How best to improve schools?

The Conservatives have no policies currently I'm aware of that might offer different solutions. I wish they would, maybe there are some alternatives going forward.

In this tough environment it's easy to just condemn the present government without addressing how we can raise the money to put somethings as right as they can be.

Sarcasm doesn't present solutions. It has a part to play in political life and always has, but doesn't help us make things better in society.

It doesnt pay for the NHS (how can that be done without an increase win taxes?) it doesnt pay for a half decent justice system, it doesn't pay for the new nursery places in schools, it doesn't improve the care system, it doesnt help those using food banks, it doesn't help any sort of levelling up...

Tackle tax evasion before penalising pensioners.

I realise not all need the WFA but Most L Party supporters I know of in GN have also said the cut off point for WFA was too low and it's been brought up in L party meetings. We're honest enough to say "this was done OK, this, we don't agree with.

The Unions were against this too. It's not a good sign when the Unions condemn Labour for something they did in the first weeks of office.

Wyllow3 Sun 27-Oct-24 13:42:01

I was glad to see that opposition. Quite a healthy sign, I'd say, shows we don't all think the same.
You are right about tax evasion.

That certainly deserved the

However, I’m not convinced that Starmer would really be heartened by a one woman fan club, so I don’t understand why that got a QED.

when I first began school and had to write about my family, I put my brother's name as Keith. The teacher crossed it out and put Kieth. why dos the I before E still continue?

It would be indeed be easier to learn that
c always needs ei that way round , when you think of the other ei words like eight, height, feint, heifer, foreign, seize, weird, their, etc. There have been lots of attempts to add spelling rules to help.
I suppose i before e except after c stuck because it’s a rhyme.

Mamie Sun 27-Oct-24 16:32:44

I think the ie after c mostly applies if the sound is ee. But then species....

Mamie Sun 27-Oct-24 16:49:58

And the comparative adjective spicier.
The students to whom I teach English try to tell me the French language is harder. Wait until we get to spelling and pronunciation I say.....

escaped Sun 27-Oct-24 17:17:10

We had apéritifs at a posh luncheon today, and forgetting I wasn't in France, I very nearly asked for a kir. We've not had that word yet, have we? 🥂 cheers Kir Starmer!

RosiesMaw2 Sun 27-Oct-24 20:11:20

If OP is so outraged by Kier Starmer, what about Rachael Reeve’s and Angela Raynor both of which I have seen on GN. confused

Allira Sun 27-Oct-24 20:35:35

It's Keir with an e not an i
'Cause Keir with an i goes Kire not Keer
It's Kee not Kie
Now if my name were Bob
I'd be Bob - even backwards
And that is only half of it
It's Starmer, not Starker

But I don't care! I'm PM!
And a Sir.

I’m not willing to be berated by anyone, but I’ll risk sharing this with you.
My LP voting brother in law refers to his colostomy bag as Keir Stoma.
Evidently, despite his political choice, he thinks it’s very funny because all politicians are full of . . .

How many people are going to be affected by the mean increase in the bus fare Starmer and Angela are bringing in Years ago when I hadn't got a bus pass it was four pounds to go to town Then the conservatives had the great idea of the two. Pound fare helpful for working class going to work or even socialising But three pouñd now after the budget I read somewhere how much the lords get paid just to turn up for a day and sit in the house of lords I think it was a couple of hundred how about paying t hem the minimum wage and expecting more from them the money saved could go to the black hole

MissAdventure Tue 29-Oct-24 18:01:16

I always bought a yearly ticket, rather than paying for each individual journey.

I don't know if that will be affected by the change, but I expect so.

Doodledog Wed 30-Oct-24 00:54:10

It’s not a mean increase, it’s a maximum increase, which will vary across councils but be independent of one another. It has the square root of nothing to do with the HOL unless you think that an extra £1 on their bus fare to the House will deter them from attending?

Mollygo Wed 30-Oct-24 07:26:15

You’re right. Of course it has nothing to do with the HOL. They, like MPs, can claim travel expenses anyway so they won’t care anyway.
