Yes I would agree to meet with Archbishop Welby - Welby hadn’t abused anyone. It’s much more personal and heartfelt to speak and probably pray together. Also it’s much harder for Welby to do this than we assume.
OldFrill
The victims want the bishops involved to resign.
Seems right.
Yes, they are all guilty of failure to act.
Condoning what happened or more worried about the image of the Church?

Whilst we can all agree that Welby's failure to act is truly shocking there is no need for such personal remarks about the man and his appearance.
William Shakespeare said "the eyes are a window to the soul" and a persons demeanor can be forboding, so its not about his physical looks but about the way he comes across. I hope that's understood.
I am a bt stunned that Justin Welby is married as he always looks so dour and dead in the eyes. I had assumed him a gay man as he seems so pro gay. He should have considered his wife and children much, much earlier and it is quite manipulative to ask people to pray for them as if we are bad for wanting him to resign. He is over retirement age and does not need the salary. He will be ok financially
Whatever the rights (if any) and wrongs (many) this is totally small minded and entirely out of order.
Words fail.
I was expressing surprise at finding out he had a wife and kids. Freedom of speech, an honest expression, call it what you will. Perhaps small minded of me, but genuine and not as small minded and out of order as the C of E.
Although I am extremely angry that Welby didn't act in 2013 I do feel very sorry for him. He may have made a dreadful mistake but that doesn't mean he's a dreadful person. I'm not a Christian but I do believe in forgiveness and I think Welby bitterly regrets his "lack of curiosity" and only he knows why he took that stance. I think Welby is capable of punishing himself for his mistakes, he really doesn't need any help. Welby has had an impossible job, he's been trying to hold together a diminished church in the Western world (but with an active evangelical wing) that wants to be progressive and a thriving, growing church in areas of the world that has very different aspirations, totally impossible.
fwiw I'm not condoning anything, he made a huge mistake and (eventually) has done the right thing, although I can't help but think he wanted to stay on to try to make things better. Sorry but I will always try to believe the best before the worst, it's very good for my mental health!

dour
/dʊə,daʊə/
adjective
relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance.
"a hard, dour, humourless fanatic"
Having an opinion about someone's demeanor is not the same as criticising their physical looks.
00opsidia. You do realise that Archbishop Welby suffers from depression?
I was expressing surprise at finding out he had a wife and kids
Maybe find out before shooting your mouth off.
His wife Caroline Eaton studied at the University of Cambridge in the mid-1970s where she met Justin Welby. The couple married in 1979 and later he went on to forge a successful career as an oil executive
After her husband left his career to train to become a clergyman in Durham he and Caroline were living off savings. But despite their financial struggles Caroline supported her husband's decision.
The couple have five children, Tim, Peter, Eleanor, Katherine and Hannah. They lost their seven-month-old daughter Johanna in a car crash in France in 1983
The tragedy motivated Justin to become a man of the cloth and he was ordained as a deacon in 1992 and a priest in 1993

*00opsidia*. You do realise that Archbishop Welby suffers from depression?
Does that excuse him in some way?
MissAdventure why would you think that? Having depression might explain why Archbishop Welby looks dour. Although by now, anyone would be looking dour ….and probably depressed.
Ah, apologies, I understand what you meant now.
Yes, plenty to look dour about, I'd imagine.
Holding onto a secret like that had to have taken it's toll.

dead in the eyes.
Quite honestly, that is totally unacceptable.

Why, when in a hole, keep digging?

Thanks RosiesMaw2 and ronib too, I'm glad I'm not the only one to find such comments unacceptable.
foxie48 Yes, I am sure the fact that he did not pursue this with vigour is something he will bitterly regret as long as he lives.

Why ask if you think I'm digging? I wasn't by the way,but I am allowed an opinion even if some people don't like it.
You can't control my thoughts or what I write. Why are you so afraid of me expressing myself? Worried what will come out?
What are you talking about?

To you and a few others. I don't see hundreds or thousands of people objecting or arguing, do you?
What does that tell you? Have you read the comments section of the Daily Mail? I am being nicer than many there. You want to read what people really think? Go there and why not argue with them and tell them they're wrong too. That should give you something to do as one story has over 800 negative comments!

Is this not a smidgen homophobic?
I may have had some respect for Welby had he fallen on his sword +metaphorically), however he released a statement saying he would not resign and was then (within hours) forced to U turn. I have no respect and no sympathy. There is MSM discussion that he may not get the usual retirement peerage 'may not get'! Unbelievable to think he could be a sitting peer in 2026.

Why don't you get off your high horse and ask yourself why you're defending someone who defended abusers?
Think what you want.

More will come out. It will be a shock to some and not others.
