Supporters of a 78yr old Bristol woman, recalled to prison because a Government contractor said they couldn’t find an electronic tag small enough for her wrist, are going to hold a silent, candlelit vigil [on Friday 10 Jan] outside the prison where she is being held.

^My husband used to have to qualify in first aid as a police officer. He always used to say, "is this the year we apply a tourniquet or do we let them bleed to death." He swore it changed every time he did a course.^

Same here with our childminding first aid courses!
The most confusing one was when a certain rule was being changed a month after the course.
"I've got to teach you this way, but next month it'll be a different way so you might want to bear that in mind..." 😵‍💫

If it wasn't so crazy I'd have to laugh.

At the Labour Party Conference last year a plan was announced to reduce the women’s prison population, even closing some women’s prisons through the establishment of a Woman’s Justice Board. It was acknowledged that prison isn’t working for women.

Only around a third of females sentenced to custody have committed a violent offence, and alternatives to women’s custodial sentences are being sought such as community sentences and residential women’s centres.

Surely the reason to keep someone in prison is if they are a risk to the public, not for punishment, because it just doesn’t work. A properly funded support and rehabilitation system would be much better and society would benefit. There is no benefit from sending this person back to prison. It just creates headlines and a martyr for her cause, although a very worthwhile one imo.

You think the retired school teacher needs rehabilitation?

Agree totally.
I mean people might feel irritated by this woman and her actions but nobody was harmed though some were greatly inconvenienced.
Not a reason to imprison her.

She broke the law.
Reason enough, if, as she claims, she is unable to be released with a tag.

Many people break the law but are not sentenced to prison for it. There are many who pay fines, do community service, serve a suspended sentence with certain conditions like wearing a tag etc., some are simply issued with a warning for a minor misdemeanour and no previous form.
I imagine the idea is to make an example of this woman but I don’t think it is fair.

A police officer was badly injured.

People were unable to make flights, hospital appointments, work engagements etc.

Freight drivers who come from Europe can drive for only a limited number of hours so their journeys could take many hours longer.

Importantly hundreds of Police were deployed at huge expense to the tax payer.

This woman and her cronies deserved their sentences.

Babs03 Sun 12-Jan-25 14:21:41

I am not saying this woman is without blame, I am saying that the way this is being handled is unfair. We can argue over the reasons why, and if I had missed a flight etc., I’d be fuming, but this is a 78 year old woman who’s wrists are too thin to wear a tag - though I find it hard to believe the tag can’t be adjusted - so has gone to prison. If I were a member if her family I would probably read her the riot act gif being a silly old bugger but I would also be demanding that the authorities find a suitable tag and release her from prison.

Me too. What she did wasn't a "minor misdemeanor".

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jan-25 14:32:45

Tags are usually worn on someone's ankle.
That includes under 16s, I think.

I have a hard job believing none can be found to fit this person.

Wyllow3 Sun 12-Jan-25 14:34:10

About tags - its a private company, Serco, in some trouble - but I really don't believe they can't find something suitable or quickly make something for women generally, she cant be the only one.

You think the man who missed his father's funeral was irritated and his mother was irritated? I think they were probably devastated, same for the man who missed the birth of his baby. You don't get a second chance at those things. Can you say for certain that none of those or any of the other people haven't suffered mental health issues because of her actions? I don't think you can.

She doesn't have a right to be released, it is a privilege and one she can't have because she can't wear the tag.

Two more stupid, extremely sanctimonious old women, supporters of Just Stop Oil, have defaced Charles Darwin's grave in Westminster Abbey with orange chalk proclaiming 1.5 is Dead.
Led away by the police.
What a pair of prats.

That is desecration. Appalling.

In fact, that was most unusual because she'd served only about a fifth of her sentence.

What has Darwin to do with this?

I hope they are given buckets, hot water, soap and scrubbing brushes and supervised until every last little grain of paint has gone.
Then charge them with desecration of a grave the sentence for which is up to 10 years imprisonment.

We know their message is important but this is not the way to win minds and influence governments or the general public.

Allira Mon 13-Jan-25 15:18:32

They believe they know what Darwin would be thinking.

“Darwin would be turning in his grave to know we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction.”

Wyllow3 Mon 13-Jan-25 15:30:13

I understand the "logic", but it's a complete mistake to think it will garner support, it gets the opposite.

Thats what I don't understand in the choices of places to demonstrate.

The woman is in jail because she broke the law. She is not in jail " through no fault of her own".
