My goodness the statement from the Murdoch is extraordinarily damning.

I wonder what it is that they are keen that we don’t hear at a trial.

Harry has been criticised since his marriage, how has he been
vindicated? Cold has set the time span, no connection

I think he has done well with this, balances out some of the bad things in the past. He is certainly no saint but this has shown he does have a certain determination to put things right.

He has perhaps been vindicated for the things that happened in his relationship with Chelsy Davy - as he blamed the press for the break up of that relationship and the timescale would be correct.

I don't know why he turned it into an individual crusade as he was originally a co-plaintiff with William and Kate - where it was proved
Harry was hacked 9 times
William was hacked 35 times
and Kate was hacked 155 times

However he dropped out as a plaintiff in that case and decided to launch his own case with his own lawyers after Elton John introduced Harry and Meghan to David Sherborne at Elton's holiday villa. Harry was scathing about Prince William choosing to settle his case (the secret deal he called it) but he sounds a bit hypocritical in retrospect.

I also think that Prince William should get much more credit as it was he that set the ball rolling on exposing the phone hacking scandal back 20 years ago which turned into a domino effect.
- William realised that his phone messages were being reported in the press after a discussion with Tom Bradby
- he went to the police who started a criminal investigation
- it was found that his aide's answerphone was hacked (remember the old school answerphones where you could listen to your messages from anywhere using a 4-digit code?)
- the police investigation mushroomed out into the widespread hacking of answerphones and the use of private detectives and other dubious sources against celebrities and victims of crimes.
- Eventually it led to criminal cases 100 were arrested and charged - Rebekka Brookes managed to evade conviction but others did not - several people went to prison
- most victims brought their claims between 2010 and 2014 - most settled or were awarded modest sums between £20,000-100,000. The man falsely accused of murder received £15,500
- Harry originally brought a claim with William and Kate. William settled in 2020 for the 190 times they had been hacked believed to be for £1,000,000 which it is said he donated to the Harry's Invictus Games

I wonder how Harry will use this result now?
Will he feel he can at last put the intrusions into his personal life to bed forever, and quietly get on with his life? That would certain help his mental health.
Or will he start giving more interviews, and finding others to blame?
Personally I think he would earn greater respect by going for the first option, and putting his win to good use.

He is back in the news in the Spring, back to court , he wants the same police protection in this country for himself and his family as the working royals,

vegansrock Thu 23-Jan-25 05:51:24

Good for Harry in not backing out at the first opportunity. The newspaper group apologised and admitted they hounded him and his mother. This was important to extract an admission of liability so is more significant than the earlier settlements .

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 05:53:24

Sorry forgot to say it’s an appeal , he lost the case last year,

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 05:56:25

He didn’t back down earlier as did the many others , he is very
wealthy so could afford the costs

whywhywhy Thu 23-Jan-25 05:57:52

Well done Harry!

vegansrock Thu 23-Jan-25 07:12:49

Damages well over £10m. 6 investigators every day for 16 years digging into his private life. Good for exposing this.

I don’t see it as unreasonable to request protection. He served in Afghanistan, he is a member of the RF so is at similar risks to other family members in the UK. He isn’t a working royal so protection will only be needed during infrequent visits to the UK

I’m very pleased this to hear this apology from a group of powerful individuals who in past years could say and so what they liked and ruined the life’s and characters of many people.

The innocent have been vindicated and not before time.

I believe we need a free press but we need to be able to trust that same body of people too and today with so much nonsense being bandied about that makes it difficult.

Claremont Thu 23-Jan-25 09:30:58

Yes, well done. And for all the others too. As said in the OP- they are trying to hide something even bigger and more damning by settling. I hope some pursue to get to the real truth.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 09:33:15

He chose to settle out of court

eazybee Thu 23-Jan-25 09:54:41

If he has any sense he will lay it to rest, as William has done, and use the money for charitable purposes, which will give him some purpose in his aimless existence.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 10:07:04

Yes, he had an interest in doing charity work, Sentebale,
Invictus,

Barleyfields Thu 23-Jan-25 10:08:57

I doubt he has much sense eazybee. William settled quietly and without fuss. That’s not Harry’s style.

Allira Thu 23-Jan-25 10:22:03

It's younger child syndrome though.

Oldest makes the rules, middle or younger child needs the rules and the youngest is there to break the rules.

Anyone with more than one child knows that!

Barleyfields Thu 23-Jan-25 10:26:03

I think it’s being-married -to- Meghan syndrome.

Claremont Thu 23-Jan-25 10:30:08

Hope they go for the Daily Mail too.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 11:32:39

Cold thank you for the info re phone hacking , poor Catherine

Allira Thu 23-Jan-25 11:40:55

Cold Thu 23-Jan-25 00:59:06

Thank you Cold for setting out the facts so well and succinctly.

icanhandthemback Thu 23-Jan-25 12:09:13

Virtually everything you read about Harry is negatively slanted and this won't change. In fact, the press will take their revenge. This will mean people suck up the narrative about him and he will never really win. If the press don't know the facts, they'll make it up. I know that this happens because it has happened to the organisation my family worked for. So often the "facts" were completely wrong in press reports. Fortunately it wasn't abusive just factually incorrect or speculative.

The trouble with the law in this country is that once one side has offered to settle out of court, the other person is really at a disadvantage if they choose to carry on proceedings. That means we will never know the complete truth. Whilst I can see that we don't want additional expense or the Court's time to be taken up, it does mean that it turns into a bit of a white wash.

Anyway, I don't agree with all that Harry does (although I am more sympathetic to some of his "crimes") but I am glad he continued pushing things. One day the press will be accountable if there are people like Harry to call them on it.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 12:17:14

Harry does much talking , too much talking

MaggsMcG Thu 23-Jan-25 12:19:00

He deserved to win but, he should donate it to a charity even if its an American one.
