When Donald Trump welcomed Imran Khan to the White House in 2019, the then-president of Pakistan expressed his frustration at volleys of aggressive questions from reporters outside the Oval Office.

The president, I was told by a well-connected source, had a ready answer, phrased something like this.

“Look, you’re doing it wrong,” he said to Mr Khan and his entourage. “Every day, I wake up and I tweet the craziest thing I can think of.

“The press run after that, and then I can get on and do what I actually want somewhere else”.

The anecdote – hearsay though it may be – came to mind this morning after Mr Trump’s eye-popping announcement that the US would occupy the Gaza Strip and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East”.

You do realise people from Gaza are actually human beings?

Unbelievable really.

Can't find words- how does one find words for this?

Probably best if I don't try.

When election time comes, the public can only choose between the available candidates. If the opposition didn't want Trump to win, they should have put up a more attractive candidate.

Yes

It works though, doesn't it. I'm not saying it's right, it's outrageous, and not the way to run a country but the statement about Gaza is one of the craziest things he could think, the world is reacting and not keeping an eye on what else he is up to.

Distraction strategy.

In this country they call it "a good day to bury bad news".

It would appear that not everyone understands the concept of a democracy. Trump may have been elected as POTUS but he was not elected to be a dictator and one who is using unelected people to do his bidding. The position and power of the president should be balanced with the power of the House of Representatives and the Senate. These provide the checks and balances of the democratic system. It is clear that Trump is not acting within the law with several of his Executive Orders as this is his second term, he will know this and he clearly doesn't care.
"With an executive order, President Trump can order the federal government to take any steps that are within the scope of the constitutional authority of the executive branch, and do not violate any federal law.

The Constitution has a set of checks and balances written into it so that no one branch of the government is more powerful than the other. The president can’t use an executive order to sidestep those checks and balances, and the president can’t take over powers from other branches, such as the power vested in Congress to pass new statutes or in the courts to invalidate certain laws as unconstitutional."

Dead cat strategy…

I hadn't heard of that but yes.

That is it, and that is what he advised Imran Khan to do.
Did Imran Khan take his advice?

What's happened to Imran? Oh yes -
Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has been given a 14-year jail sentence in a land corruption case, officials and his lawyer have said.

Interesting anecdote though wasn’t it?

This is all very well, foxie, but if the President ignores all of it how is it going to be enforced?

He has control of the armed forces. That's a pretty useful thing to have to bend people to your will.

With such a happy ending for Khan, too...

Interesting anecdote though wasn’t it?

Yes, it was.

Interesting that Imran has just been sentenced to 14 years in prison. However, are these trumped-up charges? (sorry for the pun).

I always rather liked him when he was playing cricket.

Interesting anecdote though wasn’t it?

No, it's vile and shows what sort of person he is and therefore people who like him are. That we have lost our humanity. Its all a game on Twitter.

They all do it bathsalts to a degree

Some are not such ostentatious showmen but not all politicians are honourable and altruistic.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 06-Feb-25 15:43:14

The Democrats are in disarray. Why so quiet right now?

Trump worked extremely hard during his 4 years on the sidelines and that effort is now paying dividends.

Labour had 14 years on the sidelines and all they've come up with is a loose plan for the utter destruction of this country.

ronib Thu 06-Feb-25 17:15:23

But the plan keeps changing FGT2 so it might get better. Anyway David Milliband might be back on the scene do we think? Milliband’s million dollar salary probably kept him in America but that’s under threat now. Head of charity- nice work for some….

foxie48 Thu 06-Feb-25 18:24:40

MaizieD just responding to those who day "Trump won, get over it". Democracy in the US is being tested to the limit, Trump breaks all the rules and seemingly gets away with it. I've no idea where this will lead but it's a very frightening time for America and the rest of the world. Trump's solution to Gaza is clearly ethnic cleansing and it will have far reaching consequences regardless of whether it goes ahead or not. The damage is already done and I fear the first to pay the price will be the remaining hostages, but neither Trump nor Netanyahu will care about that.

on speed!

In the meantime, he has now targeted our First Amendment right of freedom of religion. The government will now have a department that investigates "anti-Christian bias". Another step towards Christian Nationalism and a state religion. This was so important for our founding fathers, that they made it the first topic they covered.

imaround Thu 06-Feb-25 19:54:49

Musk now has access to the CDC and Dept of Labor.

Medial clinics for low income people and child care centers are now being shut down due to Trumps illegal funding freeze. The people are starting to go without, suffering will increase.

Farmers are in a panic because of the USAID shutdown, they will lose $2 Billion in sales this year and crops will rot.

The Democrats and courts are finally starting to catch up. Courts are trying to shut down the illegal actions, we will see if they comply. I have no idea what will happen if they don't comply, probably nothing.

Democrats have shut down the Senate to force the Republicans to work with them.

There were protests in all 50 states yesterday.

The push back has begun and will continue.

LizzieDrip Thu 06-Feb-25 20:04:47
