this continues an ongoing thread on Gaza

The O/P read (in part)

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.

The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”

We now have the aid crisis at the focus of world wide attention.

I wonder how the UN could have been 'effective' in bringing this genocide to an end?
I also wonder, can anyone bring it to an end?

silverlining48 Tue 27-May-25 18:19:27

Israel perhaps 🤔? ( most unlikely of course)

Anniebach Tue 27-May-25 18:22:46

Hamas,

Maremia Tue 27-May-25 18:32:08

Yes, sadly that's all we have...Israel and Hamas, and neither want to stop.

Wyllow3 Tue 27-May-25 18:38:22

If the UN was truly effective, this war would have come to an end before now How do you work this out, Allira?

Because although the UN does provide military peacekeeping forces (mainly in Africa atm) but their involvement in Gaza has been aid and never any more, tho they do have UN security to guard aid.

Yes, in an ideal world there would be more peacekeeping but neither Israel nor Palestine has involved them.

Israel fought back after the horrors of 7th October 2023, Hamas has the hostages , why not let them free ?

The UN said on Monday that nine staff working for its Palestine refugee agency UNRWA will be sacked because they may have been involved in the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks against Israel. 5.aug. 2024

Always more complicated when you get the details.

Yes, it's true that out of a staff of 13.000 workers 9 were sacked. the investigation took a long time (dating from 2023)
It had big repercussions for the UN at the time and took some time to restore confidence on countries, but there was also evidence that Israel had pressured prisoners to say the agency has Hamas links.

I think a precondition to a ceasefire and hostage return negotiations is the urgent need to stop starvation and poor or no water supplies. Countries are calling for just that - adequate aid, negotiations.

I don't think Palestinians should be forced to accept being corralled by military action into a small part of Gaza with just 4/5 centres. International voices are against this, this is why so many countries now even Germany are speaking up.

silverlining48 Tue 27-May-25 18:59:47

Hamas aren’t attacking Israel , they havnt done for many months. Do you think Israel woukd have kept quiet if there had been a single attack, or even a failed attack, we woukd have heard all about it. Israel is fully protected by its iron dome system which Israel has.
The bombs and rockets and are all going one way. Into Gaza.
This is a one way war where only one side are doing the killing,

Iam64 Tue 27-May-25 20:04:58

According to AIPAC a Jewish sites over 11 days in May, 4300 rockets were fired by Hamas at Israel.
On 20.03.25 the bbc reported Hamas claimed to have launched three rockets at Tev Aviv in response to Israeli strikes and killing of civilians

I looked online but saw nothing. Will check AIPAC which I Havnt come across. However it’s few and far between l, presumably with no casualties .

Oreo Tue 27-May-25 20:52:13

There are casualties now and again in Israel as some missiles do get through, few thanks only to the iron dome system of defence. That doesn’t stop hamas and until recently hezbollah.

I did look up AIPAC at length - it's US based/financed very big, very wealthy, a pressure group in politics in USA and pretty controversial, to say the least.

Certainly aligned with Likud and other further right Israeli parties. I suggest people look them up themselves.

They dont give a source for the figures.

As expected the GHFs attempt at distributing aid in a less than professional, inexperienced and unfair way has ended in absolute chaos. The American armed guards simply melted away as unsurprisingly did not have the stomach to fire on starving people.

What now? Not the obvious of course, but it is still piled up waiting at the border. Sufficient to end starvation.

West Bank: Israeli soldiers killed Amer Rabee, a 14-year-old Palestinian American, branding him a terrorist. His killing has added to accusations that the Israeli military uses excessive force and operates with impunity.

The Economist is reporting that

A triple crises is waiting in the wings for Netanyahu.

The first of course is the humanitarian crises in Gaza.

The second is the draining away of support from Israel’s traditional allies.

Last is the constitutional crises about to erupt over who controls the security services, the courts and the army in Israel.

He appears addicted to crises of any sort - which does not bode well for the Israeli population.

there is a full report on this

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gep705527o

which has a video of thousands over running the site, torn down fences.

On Tuesday afternoon, Israeli and Palestinian media shared videos showing thousands of men, women and children streaming into one of the distribution sites. In one clip, some people are seen running and ducking as what appear to be gunshots ring out.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos as people seized food parcels and other aid. They also said Israeli troops stationed nearby had opened fire.

"The situation was extremely difficult. They only allowed 50 people to cross at a time," one man told BBC Arabic's Middle East daily radio programme. "In the end, chaos broke out - people climbed over the gates, attacked others, and took all the [aid]."

It's not dissimilar to the looting when the first UN lorries arrived, desperate people.

I wish some kind of temporary truce could be reached by all aid suppliers because the longer it goes on the more desperate people will be.

Such energy for starving people

It seems that most of the food distributed was pretty low nutritional value, with rice, pasta etc making up the bulk. It had apparently been sourced from Israel.

I read that those desperate for food are going to be controlled by gunfire from the IDF. They treat animals better than that.

More letters pleading for the genocide to stop

“Three hundred and eighty writers and organisations including Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, Russell T Davies, Hanif Kureishi, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and George Monbiot have signed a letter stating that the Israeli government’s war in Gaza is genocidal and calling for an immediate ceasefire.

“The use of the words ‘genocide’ or ‘acts of genocide’ to describe what is happening in Gaza is no longer debated by international legal experts or human rights organizations,” reads the letter, which was also signed by William Dalrymple, Jeanette Winterson, Brian Eno, Kate Mosse, Irvine Welsh and Elif Shafak.”

My point as I’m sure you knew Anniebach, was that you seem unable or unwilling to accept the news about how hard it is on Gaza
