this continues an ongoing thread on Gaza

The O/P read (in part)

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.

The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”

We now have the aid crisis at the focus of world wide attention.

My point as I’m sure you knew Anniebach, was that you seem unable or unwilling to accept the news about how hard it is on Gaza

If I knew your dig was for me * Iam* I would not have replied ,

828 UK based lawyers have written to the government asking for more sanctions on Israel as "genocide is being perpetrated in Gaza".

Wyllow3 Wed 28-May-25 13:41:01

On commercial sanctions, our trade on goods with Israel is relatively small compared with the EU, but not insignificant. Trade on services is greater.

As I don't understand enough I can't comment further, except to say that it looks like it would have to be very targeted to have an effect but not "punish" citizens. Wouldnt it be best to work with other countries?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 28-May-25 13:52:52

Extract from lawyers letter.

“All states, including the UK, are legally obliged to take all reasonable steps within their power to prevent and punish genocide; to ensure respect for international humanitarian law; and to bring to an end violations of [the right to self-determination]. The UK’s actions to date have failed to meet those standards … The international community’s failure to uphold international law in relation to the occupied Palestinian territory contributes to a deteriorating international climate of lawlessness and impunity and imperils the international legal system itself. Your government must act now, before it is too late”

UN - There is evidence of gunfire injuries during the mass rush on the distribution point: its pointed out that

" many people in Gaza were fearful of traveling south to try access the aid, because of the security concerns during the long journey, and because they feared detention by Israeli forces when they got there. Many others, he said, were unable to travel: women with small children, the elderly, and those who are sick or injured."

but a careful reading also reveals Netanyahu's original intentions are intact as per the O/P

He is quoted as saying "Eventually to have a sterile zone in the south of Gaza where the entire population can move for its own protection."

and the US in denial

"A senior Trump administration official meanwhile said: "Aid is getting to the people in need, and through their secure distribution system, Israel is kept safe and Hamas empty handed."

'Most of the injuries were due to gunshots' and that it was shooting from the IDF.
Did anyone get a chance to watch PMQs at lunchtime? Sometimes the Gaza issue is brought up.

Parsley3 Wed 28-May-25 17:00:55

Are the IDF saying that they were shooting at Hamas?

silverlining48 Wed 28-May-25 18:14:36

I am watching Aljazeera where Mr Mansour the palistinian ambassador to the UN is pleading passionately for the palistinian people and his dignity was only broken by his tears, and mine, when talking about the deaths of tens of thousands of children.
Anyone with any compassion and those without, should watch, listen and learn.

I wait to see the response when he ends this most painful speech …. Well he finished and the response from the American, and Israeli ambassadors were as expected.
They must have hearts of stone.

The IDF have said they were shooting in the air, some witnesses have claimed people were shot, no reliable confirmation as no one to give it.

Good videos in BBC and Guardian.

Havnt seen Netanyahu so happy for years when announced that they have eliminated the Hamas chief, Mohammed Sinwar. They also eliminated his brother.

The IDF fired in the air and the armed security force fell back as nobody wanted to harm civilians.
There is no proof of anyone being shot unless armed civilians shot at each other as there was fighting according to a man in the crowd who said some of the crowd set on others and seized their aid parcels.I would imagine that some were also hurt in the crowd surges.

There’s a British trade delegation in Israel now ( could just be one man from the government I just heard this quickly on the radio when I was at work.) Tho no new trade deals at the moment there are all the present trade deals continuing.I think Labour want to send a message that Israel is still an important ally.

valdavi Wed 28-May-25 21:03:06

It was one man, the Trade Envoy to Israel, Ian Austin. He visited Haifa on Monday.
The Foreign Office says he's there to maintain our relationship with Israeli businesses. The new trade agreement has been suspended.

Wyllow3 Wed 28-May-25 21:44:33

I think it's created a confusion that needs to be clarified

"Lammy suspended talks on a free trade deal" but didn't say there would never be one.

"It did not seem to occur to the Department for Business and Trade that the fierce signals of disapproval sent out by the Foreign Office last week meant it would at least be advisable to postpone Austin’s visit".

I think if we want sanctions then targeted measures not "all or nothing" as can we afford to ban all trade, no, and therefore not to stop all communication or even consideration around businesses

But Austin not the right person. He's mentioned as being "great on combatting anti semitism in the UK but is pro settler".

However he's "talking to businesses but not Israeli regime officials"

NYT Report.

The U.N. denounced Israel’s attempt to control the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, with a senior official calling it part of “an assault on their human dignity.” Israel, which kept aid out of Gaza for more than two months, says its new system is meant to bypass Hamas.

The U.N. World Food Program, citing initial reports, said two people appeared to have died when crowds broke into a food warehouse in central Gaza last night. On Tuesday, when Israel’s new aid program began, dozens of people were injured in a similar rush on a distribution site.

Israel faces mounting anger from Europe over the war and growing pressure from the U.S. to reach a truce. European diplomats criticized both the aid program and Israel’s threats of another major ground invasion. “The disproportionate use of force and the deaths of civilians cannot be tolerated,” said Kaja Kallas, the E.U.’s top diplomat, adding that aid “must never be politicized or militarized.”

Israel confirms plans to establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Quite illegal of course, and the Palestinians who own the land - what happens to them?

Maremia Thu 29-May-25 08:40:38

'US distances itself from Gaza food delivery group amid questions over its leadership and funding' this article is in the Guardian online.
Elsewhere, but now I can't find the link, sorry, one of the 'regular' Aid Agency persons said this new group was a 'distraction', while aid is already in place and stuck at the border.

Maremia Thu 29-May-25 08:41:31

Simple, those Palestinians are attacked and hounded out.

It is too sad and the killing goes on and on and on.
Someone on a previous thread invoked the ghost of Corbyn, and here he is again, presenting a bill under the 'ten minute rule' asking for an inquiry into the UK's role in the bombardment of Gaza.
Not a fan of his, but anything to make the genocide stop.

Totally agree, we have to put religion & politics aside and all I see is the killing of these innocent humans! Is horrible, and it goes on and on, my heart goes out to them, imagine being in their shoes 😔

Whitewavemark2 Thu 29-May-25 09:31:11

Apparently the new settlements are the largest expansion ever into the West Bank.

This is land that would be Palestine under the two state solution.

Then Israel wonders why it is constantly under attack from others.

You simply can’t behave like a thief and destroyer of livelihoods and expect no comeback.

Completely agree WWM. Here is the detailed reference.

Any doubts as to the "source" of the reference (as its the BeeB) can note

"Israeli ministers say 22 new Jewish settlements have been approved in the occupied West Bank - the biggest expansion in decades"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j5954edlno

It cannot be clearer - this is an aggressive move by the current regime to clear out or totally occupy Palestine - for ever.

Katz said, "This is a Zionist, security, and national response - and a clear decision on the future of the country," he added.

Smotrich called it a "once-in-a-generation decision" and declared: "Next step sovereignty!

I do think it's time for UK debate to be brought to a higher level, but so complicated given it's relating to both Gaza and the West Bank. If we go for full on trade blocks, it will affect UK business, some of what we supply can be bought from the US instead.

silverlining48 Thu 29-May-25 13:37:49

I think that’s exactly what Israel expects WWM. They rarely have any comeback so this will be new to them.
Has anyone watched the film by Basel Ardra which recently was awarded with a best film gong in America? It’s a hard watch but for anyone with an interest or desire to learn more about the West Bank I can recommend.
On his return from Hollywood he and another director were beaten up.
