this continues an ongoing thread on Gaza

The O/P read (in part)

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.

The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.

“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”

We now have the aid crisis at the focus of world wide attention.

Well said Philippa60 and welcome back 😃

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 16:41:05

Also do you know that our hostages have not received even one visit from the Red Cross as is prescribed by law?
They are held in cages meant for animals, with chains on their legs. They have barely any food or water.
If we don't get them back soon they won't survive.

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 16:55:56

All dreadful Philippa60, their treatment has been horrendous.
Heard another dreadful thing, posted on Facebook today, from a poll called Harretx, about a concept known as 'Amalek', which apparently a majority of Israelis believe in. Very worrying if this is so, and hoping you can refute this.

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:01:18

Amalek is a word used to refer to the archetypal enemy of the Jews and the symbol of evil in Jewish religion and folklore, an "eternally irreconciliable enemy" that wants to murder Jews.
Some far right extremists label Hamas and other terror organizations as a modern day "Amalek" and use this to justify pre-emptive attacks against us.
Most definitely NOT something the majority of Israelis believe in!
I had to look it up to be sure what it even meant!

Really? I admit that's not what some of the released hostages have said.

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:02:31

What, growstuff? They said that they were visited by the Red Cross? I very much doubt it.
How many interviews with released hostages have you seen?

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:06:11

Just a few examples:

Meanwhile terrorists (not innocent civilians taken from their beds) held in Israeli jails are given 3 meals a day and allowed time outside for exercise.

But hey, let's ignore the facts and just buy the Hamas propaganda, right?

No, not that they were visited by the Red Cross - that they were kept in cages and shackled.

So we should accept your propaganda uncritically? OK, Iget it.

Unfortunately hamas propaganda is winning quite a few hearts.
So much so that otherwise quite sensible people are preferring to choose it over anything else.If only they knew!

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:30:20

My propaganda??
I've actually MET one of the released hostages, sat down and spent time with her.
What's your source, growstuff?

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:36:28

Thanks for the research about Amalek. The bit I read said that 'the Israelites are commanded to destroy them completely'. I do hope that the report saying '65 percent of Israelis support this' turns out to be untrue.
However, Smotrich is not a Hamas mouthpiece. He has stated that all of Gaza will be destroyed.
That the IDF does not target civilians? Every army has rogue elements. The USA had the My Lai massacre, the UK army has been accused of atrocities in Afganistan. It has been reported that the IDF 'mistakenly' fired on a convoy of relief workers, and for some strange reasons buried them and the trucks.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-May-25 17:37:38

I think that it is unquestionable that the IDF does target children. Over the months we have many witness statements from doctors who are British, American work for MSF etc who describe how children have been targeted by the IDF with many receiving head wounds in particular.

I trust British doctors to tell the truth. I can if anyone wishes provide the statements by these doctors.

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:41:09

Smotrich and Ben Gvir are the far right extremists in Netanyahu's coalition.
I despise them.

I don't seem to be getting my point across so I will try one last time.
The IDF does not TARGET civilians, children or anyone else who is not Hamas.
Of course they get caught up in this, which is terrible.
You need to distinguish between intent and impact.
In war civilians get harmed. This is a cruel fact and much regretted.
But TARGETTING, as in we AIM to kill innocent children, 100% NO.
Any information you are getting to the contrary is simply lies.

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:47:50

I don't think it will be much consolation to those bereaved mothers, that their children have been killed not as targets but simply collateral damage.

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:51:11

Did we ever get a reliable answer to who killed Hind, the wee girl in the car, calling for help?
The two medics sent to rescue her were also killed.

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:52:56

I saw that interview Whitewavemark. The children he was talking about had head wounds and also to their chests. Not bomb damage, but sniper fire.

Allira Mon 26-May-25 17:54:24

The ones released the other week looked skeletal.

Just release them, Hamas, and bring an end to the suffering of your people. If Netanyahu did continue his campaign after all hostages the release of all hostages or their bodies, then he and his Cabinet should be put under arrest.

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 17:54:42

Maremia, of course, it is no consolation, and anyone killed except terrorists is a tragedy.
I was simply making the point that the IDF does not, never has, and never will TARGET innocent civilians.
There is tons of evidence to back that up, including first hand information I am privy to.
Mistakes happen in war, innocent people are harmed (on both sides) and it's a tragedy.
I just hope the point has been made that this is never done as an intention.

On a brighter note, breaking news just now is that an imminent ceasefire and partial hostage deal may be on the cards.
Holding my breath and praying it's true

Allira Mon 26-May-25 17:57:55

Holding my breath and praying it's true

Me too, Philippa60

Whitewavemark2 Mon 26-May-25 17:57:59

But you see philippa60 I believe our doctors.

So I am afraid they top IDF propaganda every single time.

I am someone who has spent my life defending Israel. But I cannot defend a government who uses starvation as a weapon, and excessive violence on a repressed population. It is barbaric and evil.

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:58:02

Praying with you

Maremia Mon 26-May-25 17:58:40

Agreeing with you

Philippa60 Mon 26-May-25 18:27:39

Already been denied and labeled "another Netanyahu spin".
When will this end?
Another night with missiles aimed at my home?
No military here so it is pure targeting of civilians...

Good to see you posting here again.
