^Quite similar to Junior Drs Mess- I was quite shocked at first.
And you are right, I would have been the worst Officer's wife,

As far as I am aware, wives do not normally go into the Mess unless invited for a special occasion, when I am sure (and know) that the men behave impeccably and with good

manners towards any ladies (or wives!) present.

Officers and their ladies, other ranks and their wives , I so remember this from the 60’s and 70’s

Apologies. My post above was a response to @Claremont.

Maremia Tue 24-Jun-25 18:03:53

Yes Allira, I too was hoping that would be the case. Can't see any data about an increase in the deliveries, just that many, many more Palestinians have been shot down trying to access the aid.

Maremia Tue 24-Jun-25 18:07:30

Why is JD Vance now saying that the bombing was a 'success', but that the stockpile has been moved?
How can it be a success if the objective has not been achieved?

Claremont best you do not go anywhere near a Mess Hall or even an Officers Mess, as the gallows/black humour you would encounter is positively offensive, hilarious and blood chilling.

It is one of the ways our brave armed forces get through difficult times.

Sounds hideous.

Have you ever assisted in an operating theatre?
Have you ever been in a combat or stressful situation in the Armed Services?

It is not for those of a delicate nature.

What an odd question. No

I am not medically trained nor part of the armed forces.

It is a job, a profession which carries responsibilites and provides an income?

Allira Tue 24-Jun-25 18:25:05

I am not medically trained nor part of the armed forces.

I was just puzzled at your comment about it sounding hideous.

People in stressful situations often do use black or 'gallows' humour to help see them through. It's a coping mechanism

lafergar Tue 24-Jun-25 18:30:58

I find the juxtapostion between terror and humour hard to comprehend.

It's so sad what is unfolding.

Doodledog Tue 24-Jun-25 18:33:10

I'm confused. I'm sure that gallows humour is rife in a number of professions, but this is a discussion board, not an officers' mess or an operating theatre.

Re the thread topic, I am getting more and more concerned as time goes by. Clearly, whatever happens is going to be influenced by Trump and co, which doesn't fill me with confidence at all. I'm trying not to think about it too much, but it's worrying.

Because...lies. I think that's as honest as it can get. This what they do. I sincerely think we are setting ourselves up for disappointment when we hope to make sense of anything this administration says. Let's face it, they rarely stick to the same story, let alone having that story stem from some sort of reality.

AGAA4 Tue 24-Jun-25 18:49:53

Trump will claim outstanding success even if it was a complete failure. I just can't put my trust in him. He has lied too often.
I hope there will be peace in the middle east for the sake of the ordinary people who live there.
Sadly I don't think it will last long.

Ordinary people going about their lives don't want war. It's only their leaders who create these hostile situations but they usually aren't the ones who get killed.

Yes.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 24-Jun-25 19:03:13

lafergirl I am aware that this is a discussion board for older adults (the name is the giveaway)

Humour in the face of adversity, does not mean not caring/worrying, it is how some cope.

It is not disrespectful, it is not horrendous it is just a different form of self preservation .

Quite. And sometimes extreme language too.

I remember the Head of the ICU at our local hospital during the Covid crisis, when they were filming themselves, saying if the situation worsened and they ran out of ICU beds, then they would be fucked. The situation was desperate.

You have your take on things, I think I am entitled to mine.

Thanks, have a pleasant evening.

Allira Tue 24-Jun-25 19:14:52

It's not my take.

It's fact.

Maremia Tue 24-Jun-25 19:29:13

Enjoy your evening lafergar, and we'll see you online tomorrow, as the discussion flows on.

My work could be challenging. Dark/ gallows humour was a useful companion

My dear friend, retired social worker had the very sad situation of having to remove children from the mother, the police were with her.
After knocking on the door she was confronted with a shotgun.
There were plenty of dark humour jokes over that one.
My friend even gave the mother an hilarious name.

‘They’ve both been at it so long they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing’

Pretty much sums it up.

Claremont Tue 24-Jun-25 20:32:04

Allira says 'Claremont Are you saying that men in the Armed Services are not adult or mature? If so, I believe they might take issue with that rather strange comment. '

NO this is not at all what I was saying.

Thank you for this, very grateful. I shall spend time looking at those, but in the meantime, I'll join lagerfar.

I’ve looked at them, it’s as RinseandRepeat says.

Doodledog Tue 24-Jun-25 20:48:33

I fully understand the concept of gallows humour. What confuses me is why it is relevant here. None of us, AFAIK, is going to be called to a theatre of war.

Ordinary people going about their lives don't want war. It's only their leaders who create these hostile situations but they usually aren't the ones who get killed.
Absolutely. I feel so very sad for the people going through the things that I have the luxury of simply having to worry about. Young mothers, older mothers of fighting-age sons and daughters, the young people themselves who just want to live peacefully, older people who can do nothing but hope for the best and pray to their God, babies and children - all of them on both sides.

I'm not suggesting that everyone else isn't equally concerned - just that us arguing about nothing is not helping anyone.
