And
Villagers verbally abuse Scouts is the other
Take your pick🤣
They weren't scouts, but I think the law takes online abuse seriously - even if it's not face-to-face, it's still damaging. We've seen from Southport (and other places) how online communication can be the catalyst for riots. Thank goodness it didn't get to that stage in this case. To be honest, I'm not even sure that there was any physical gathering.
I'm a bit puzzled about the original report that the locals couldn't understand Scots accents, if they didn't go anywhere near them.
From what I know (and I have checked facts), the group was leaving the camp. They had been living in tents and AFAIK hadn't caused any trouble.
Somebody (or somebodies) produced a video of the group, which included police officers standing outside the camp (although not necessarily when the group was staying). I haven't seen the video, so I don't know what was said in the voice-over, although I can guess, having seen some of the other videos produced by "citizen journalists". However, I did see a couple of comments responding to the video and supporting it - familiar rants about asylum seekers staying at the taxpayers' expense while "indigenous" homeless sleep on the streets and dangers to young girls from undocumented migrants, etc. It doesn't take much to spark off the misinformation - just as it did in Southport.
I haven't seen anybody labelling the population of Newbridge. For all anyone knows, the people responsible for the video don't even come from Newbridge - they're possibly not even Welsh.
All that is known is that somebody put some effort into producing and uploading a video which was intended to provoke a reaction. I have no idea what the outcome will be, but I hope those responsible get some sort of punishment.
