"Villagers verbally abuse Scouts they mistook for migrants" (Daily Telegraph)

The subheading is "Newbridge residents confuse 30 Scottish teenagers on summer trip for asylum seekers"

The brainwashing by the far-right seems to work best on those of little brain. Of course we are all entitled to our views even when they are factually incorrect but the words for people who do this fail me.

First we find these extremists cannot tell the difference between a "small boat" full of asylum seekers and a four person rowing boat, now this!

This is the hysteria that has been deliberately built up so that these people have a completely exaggerated idea of the number of asylum seekers in this country.

But please, continue with the extremist bias if it's your thing. Eventually even the densest brain will realise they are not being told truths but are part of the foot-soldiers, who are disposable to those they see as leaders.

Oh I’m only concerned with your two contradictory posts really.

Again. Which one?

I assume that's not directed at me. Which contradictions do you have issues with?

No not you. I just want Politicsnerd to say which f her contradictory posts she is settling for.

Scouts or no scouts etc

You know like the cat in the box…😬

OK!

Having followed this story from the beginning, I did see some accounts which claimed the group was made up of scouts.

The camp is described as CRAI Scout Activity Park. My guess is that it's owned by by the Scouts and possibly sponsored by CRAI (aka the Co-op). Its website states that it can be rented by groups for various activities.

It was sloppy journalism to claim that the group was scouts. The BBC states that the group was with a charitable organisation. I haven't a clue who they were, but I do know that there are various organisations who organise short breaks for children with various disadvantages.

Does it matter if they were scouts or not?

The police Chief was referring to a video of the incident. I can't see how that opposes the headlines, Lathyrus3.

So a person took a video and spread misinformation.

At least you condemned villagers (although it's not a village) and not The Welsh as a whole on the other thread!

Would you like to link where I "condemned" the Welsh Allira?

I didn't say that at all.

Even when I give you a kind of compliment you don't see it as that!!

I support a wonderful group that provides camping holidays for children from the Bristol area: many of them have never had a holiday. And these holidays can turn their lives around. Heaven help them if they start suffering verbal abuse on top of the problems they face at home.

Yes, those organisations are wonderful, aren't they.

I was thinking that some children may never experience a holiday although most schools do organise activity days or weeks now, I believe.

“Does it matter if they were Scouts or not”

Yes I think it does in the context of the Headline quoted.

Scouts are generally regarded positively so the headline was designed to rouse further indignation.

As were other inaccuracies.

“Verbal abuse” conjures up the picture of this group of children being harried along the “Village” street, whilst “villagers” (also an image) hurl insults and threats.

I particularly object to the over dramatising of any “news” to make it more “entertaining’ or to stir further antagonism.

There was some nasty online abuse. Which may have come from racist extremists or may equally have been initiated by someone trying to get the kind of reaction that they did get.

I prefer facts not drama and impassioned language designed to stir up as much trouble as possible.

I dislike the tarring of all the residents of Newbridge with the same brush, labelling a whole community racist bigots and indeed, Wales as a whole on the other thread.

There are bigoted people everywhere but whole communities do not get labelled as they have in these threads.

Agree, but it's absolutley everywhere. Fanning the flames when a cool head would be best for everybody.

Well that’s all part of the image and rhetoric isn’t it.

Welsh “village” full of backward people of “little brain” who believe anything their “leaders” tell them, according to the OP.

Who constitute a howling mob pursuing “foreigners” down the village street, no doubt intent upon hurling them into the duck pond🙄

Not quite sure where the far right motif comes in. I expect that’s for those whose internal image of *village” tends towards the wealthy middle class.

Best to cover all bases in impassioned rhetoric.

1984 anyone?

Of course they can both be parts of the same incident Lathyrus3.

The visitors were "mistaken" for asylum seekers and insulted by residents of the Welsh town. However, the visitors were members of a charitable youth group from across the UK that had been enjoying a trip to CRAI Scout Activity Park. The visitors, some of whom were from Scotland, included children, families, teenagers, and group leaders.

This was filmed.

"Inappropriate and offensive" comments that were made online after the video was shared on Facebook are now being looked into by Gwent Police.

The video, which also alleged police were guarding the site was later denied by the police. The video has since been deleted.

Now do you understand?

What I cannot understand is that you spend all your time attacking me without commenting on those who insulted those they perceived to be asylum seekers.

From your point of view, it seems I cannot come on here and speak truth to the behaviour of the alt-right. But you accept this behaviour because those who insulted them thought they were asylum seekers. I would be delighted to find that last sentence wasn't true and that I am mistaken.

Ha, ha.

I recognise all these political tracks🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh for a little honesty in politics

That's long gone. We are constantly de humanising other human beings by labeling them illegals, scroungers, and criminals.

I agree with you about labelling whole groups, whether from a community or if they have anything else in common. However, I'm not sure they have on this thread.

I would also disagree about the importance of the group being scouts (or not). Again, I dislike any group being labelled. In this case it really doesn't matter whether they were scouts or even asylum seekers. Nobody should have created an posted online a video based on misinformation and intended to stir. My guess is that it's careless journalism by somebody who assumed that people staying on a scout camp are scouts.

Yes, there are bigoted people everywhere and I understand the police are investigating the incident.

growstuff Wed 13-Aug-25 20:14:47

To me "verbal abuse" includes online abuse - quite rightly.

Now you're the one imaging meaning which isn't there. Stick to the facts.

The quote "Villagers verbally abuse Scouts they mistook for migrants" was a direct quote from the Telegraph, which then went on to describe the group as scouts. Just goes to show how a supposedly reliable newspaper can get thigs wrong.

I don't subscribe to the Telegraph, so I can't read the rest of the article, but it's well-known that many people only ever read headlines, bylines and the first few sentences of any article.
