Man made famine - the world should be ashamed

We sit by watching as children starve to death, their mothers’ cannot feed them and their fathers’ unable to provide them with food.

Every single calorie is controlled by one government.

Why are we allowing this situation to continue?

Babs03 Fri 22-Aug-25 12:53:27

Because the Israeli government is lawless, with a crook who should be in jail running the show intent upon breaking every international law there is.
Now that the famine has been established as an irrefutable fact I hope western governments will respond accordingly as they would with any other rogue state.

Who is we? What can we possibly do?

We could not stop Rwanda slaughters and so many other world atrocities - we cannot stop this.

We are wholly impotent. I have written to my MP - I am not fit enough to protest - I have signed petitions.

I am not "sitting by" - I am distressed about this. But there is nothing I can do. I am so unwell that I can barely get through from one day to the next. I cannot take this guilt on too.

Evil people have always done evil things.

I don’t think that WWM is asking us to do any more than we can, and it sounds like you have already done more than most.
My DH and I used to go to demos and protests but now he is seriously unwell and I care for him day and night. So like you I can only do what I can do.
Also it is incumbent upon governments to act which is again what I believe WWM is saying here.
Take care.

No I’m sorry the “we” was not meant as individuals

The “we” is the world.

AGAA4 Fri 22-Aug-25 13:57:07

As individuals there is little we can do and I won't share the guilt of those powerful enough to intervene.
I am distressed by the treatment of the Palestinians and wonder at those who believe Israel is right and have no compassion for the suffering inflicted on the innocents.

David49 Fri 22-Aug-25 13:58:51

So we are ignoring Sudan which is currently the worst crisis.

AGAA4 Fri 22-Aug-25 14:09:35

There is a thread on Sudan but the Israel/Gaza situation is very one sided. Up to now Israel has been seen as a civilised country but not now.

Aveline Fri 22-Aug-25 14:11:07

But there is always a famine in Africa. My whole life I've been contributing to one or another appeal for children starving in Africa!! Why can't people live in peace? Why can't Israel see how their relentless bullying has led to this situation. I despair of people - well, men really. They seem compelled to fight.

Smileless2012 Fri 22-Aug-25 14:14:30

The propaganda film released by Israel of aid workers stirring huge vats of hot food, pre prepared appetising food on plastic plates and an array of various supplies on stacked shelves, including Snickers bars is sickening, and insults the intelligence of everyone who can see this genocide for what it is.

JohnnyMo Fri 22-Aug-25 14:19:20

I have never seen a famine where relief lorries are wrecked and looted by those who are meant to be starving.

I've seen man-made famines in Africa, where food is held back by forces to create a famine which is different to the situation in Gaza. AFAIU Israel would allow food in providing the UN could guarantee its' safe distribution.

So every aid agency and human rights organisation, as well as western governments and the UN, are lying when they say that the Israeli government has caused the famine??
The trucks laden with aid cannot deliver it because the IDF fire upon them and people desperate to access the food.

If you want to start a thread about Sudan feel free to do so.

eazybee Fri 22-Aug-25 14:36:46

Yes, HAMAS should be ashamed for bringing about this situation.

Many 'spokespeople' are repeating the stories given to them by Hamas without verification, and many gullible people trust them.
One has only to look at the BBC and its reluctant but increasingly common apologies for incorrect information.

Well there is a thread about Sudan, to which many of us including yourself contributed 🙄

What nonsense

Whitewavemark2 Fri 22-Aug-25 14:43:14

I trust all those people who are in denial over the famine will have the decency to admit how wrong they were when the truth is absolutely unavoidable.

woodenspoon Fri 22-Aug-25 14:50:16

Does anybody remember what started this and who started it? Hamas kidnapped and killed Israeli citizens. That’s what started all this. The mess is of their making. Those Israeli citizens are also being starved to death by Hamas while in captive.

Have many governments in Europe and beyond not verified the truth of what Israel is doing before condemning their actions. You may not believe Hamas but Israel is lying too but we can see what is happening in Gaza. The sheer brutality is evident.

ITN reporter reported IDF troops discussing do they shoot the looters and be blamed for civilian deaths or not and be blamed for not protecting the food convoy. In the end they did nothing and all the food was looted by young fit healthy men.

What would you do in that situation ?

This started long before the Hamas attack. The Palestinian people have been oppressed by Israel for many years.

Denial over the famine or the cause of the famine ?

You started the thread about famine not Gaza and Sudan is far worse and that is just the greed of one side. Gaza is survival of the state blame Hamas.

David49 Fri 22-Aug-25 15:12:44

Famine is a consequence of war the longer it goes on the worse it gets Europe was starving after WW1 and WW2 and disease killed as many as warfare.

These days aid agencies have to give up part of the food aid to the fighters which prolongs the war, Gaza or Sudan it’s the a
Same

Babs03 Fri 22-Aug-25 15:13:12

I blame Hamas for the heinous Oct 7th attack as has everyone on threads like this but I blame Netanyahu and his far right cronies for responding disproportionately and turning this into a genocide, using starvation as a weapon of war.
And I might add there have been attacks by the IDF on Palestinians in the West Bank with property and land taken to build more illegal settlements which is not related to what is happening in Gaza.
